Flick of the Tail

Flick of the Tail

Hi there

Went for a walk up on the forest early this morning, before the sun burns through. No cars, no planes, no humans, just lots of birds – bliss.

Oh. And some Exmoor ponies. They bring them onto the Ashdown Forest for vegetation control, because they help to keep the bracken and scrub down by grazing. This saves mechanical intervention.

Beautiful animals! The main point of this tale – or should I say the mane point of this tail – is to explain why they were standing head to rump – as you can see here. Dave explained… They use their tails to flick the flies away from their neighbour’s eyes and face. Hence the head to rump positioning. There were other pairs doing the same thing further along too…

Maybe you already knew that. But I certainly didn’t! Dave says that cows do the same, but not quite as much. If it gets a lot hotter in the garden later, Dave and I now have a plan!! 😂 😂 😂

Spot the ponies….

Carpets of heather, too. You can see here, that Crowborough – the highest point in East Sussex – still had its head it the clouds at 8am

The trees up there are magnificent, too. A perfect chestnut tree….

I have an App on my phone, called Picture This. It’s superb. I do pay about £20 a year for it, but to me it’s worth every penny. I just open the app, point the camera on my phone at the tree, flower, plant (indoors and outdoors, and it tells me 1. what it is, 2. if it’s healthy, 3. if it’s sick, 4. what I can do to help it. So if a houseplant is looking a bit poorly, or there‘s a plant in the garden that looks like it needs help, then this app is like having a plant doctor on tap. Especially with this erratic weather we‘re having.

But it’s also great out in the wild, and all over the world, for identifying trees and plants etc. Every day‘s a school day, eh?!

There was one tree in particular today, which we couldn’t help but notice. It was so loud!!

Dave went to investigate with our other favourite App, Merlin, the bird identifier….

Just look at how many birds were hiding in the one tree!! A whole village of different birds! Amazing.

So yeah. And all that before 9am!

Now it’s time to get ahead of a very busy week at Clarity. I am in design mode this weekend – and it’s coming along very nicely. A week away with Grace in Paris seems to have done the trick. Whilst I NEVER actually switch off from work entirely, the benefits of travelling and opening the mind to other things, other flavours, other worlds, are huge. New vibes, new stimulus, new colours, new energy.

We have a superb stampset which sums it up. Let me see if I can fine it… ah yes. Clean out a corner and others…STA-PA-11060-A5

Now I fancy making a little card with one of these sentiment stamps. And why not?! I spent a few hours yesterday, just doodling something and nothing in particular. Result? A whole new product range! Exciting times ahead for Clarity. We’re on a roll!

Love always,

Barb x x x

  1. Beautiful pictures. The chestnut tree is superb.
I am lucky enough to have a very diverse garden, all aspects covered, hard work, but so much scope for wildlife, birds and insects.
I downloaded both apps on your recommendation, very educational. 😊
Glad you had a good week. Precious times x

    1. Absolutely brilliant learning new things daily. I have merlin too! sometimes when I cam sleep or wake up in the early hours and the birds are chatting, I pop it on the window sill to find out what all the noise is about . It even caught a Tawny Owl the other day.
We are fortunate a lot cooler in Scotland. I do feel for you southerners, when its hot it’s melting weather, nice to be in the cool crafting if you can find somewhere shady. Enjoy your re energised designing, can’t wait to see what you have in store for us.

      Stay cool! and hydrated.xx

  2. Beautiful ponies on the Forest! They certainly know how to look out for each other!

That Sweet Chestnut tree looks magnificent with its flowers on. Hopefully they will develop onto the nuts for collection later in the year. My dad always collected the nuts for the Christmas stuffing.
    Happy memories.
Have fun designing new things Barb. It means we get new things to play with.
    Love and hugs. X

  3. Well I never knew that’s why animals stood head to tail, but it makes perfect sense – thanks Dave! I wonder what new goodies you have in store for us? x

  4. I am glad you and Grace had a wonderful time in Paris – I really enjoyed hearing about your escapades!!!!

We have just got back from a lovely walk through the woods and along the riverbank – just beautiful and the variety of birdsong was breathtaking! My husband and I are so grateful you told us about the Merlin bird app – it gives us so much pleasure and enhances our enjoyment of our walks – thank you very much!
There weren’t any cute Exmoor ponies to watch but there was lots of pretty butterflies and we did find some ice cream!🍦

  5. Beautiful photo’s. What a fantastic way to start your day. Thank you for sharing about the apps.
Fabulous hearing about your trip to Paris on Thursday. You definitely had me laughing – you are so great at sharing the details and story telling.

  6. Sounds a lovely start to the day, I’m going to try the bird app, I use google lens for flowers and trees. We drove an hour north to a place called Kingussie where my husband went on his bike and I did a walk, can you believe I put my jumper on when I stopped for my lunch it was a cool wind. Now we’re back home near Pitlochry and it’s about 20c hot enough for me. Take care in the heat. The new stamps look great. Any chance of 123 courses to show us how to use gel plate and the 2 and 3 way overlay stamps, I have bought quite a few in the sale but not sure how to get the best use from them.Have a good week.

  7. What a lovely place to have on your doorstep, love the reason for the ponies standing like that. We love the Merlin app as well and often sit in the garden listening to the birds and it’s a bonus to know what they are.
Your doodling sounds exciting so looking forward to seeing what appears in the coming weeks.
Not so sunny here today but still warm. Just had to close the doors and windows though as neighbours are having a bbq.
See you in the SHAC tomorrow for part 2 of your Paris escapade & more colouring of our street. That reminds me I need to add a bit more to mine to catch up with Thursday’s session xx

  8. Lovely pictures. Zebras do the same thing in Africa and they have a lot more nasty biting flies over there ! Xx

  9. Welcome back, you sound refreshed. Great photos, loved the ponies, they look so gentle.
This heatwave is too much for me so not much getting done.
    Stay safe.

  10. Lovely photo’s of the ponies. I had a lovely walk with my dog early this morning, and a little catch up with friends along the way. We’re lucky to have quite a few feather friends visiting our garden, and now my dog is a little older, she chooses not to chase them. Still quite hot today, but a mostly cloudy day, till later this evening.

  11. Loved this blog.
I really appreciate learning something new. Your Dave is a very knowledgeable chap.
I’ve got Thursday’s Shac to catch up on and will be travelling back from Midhurst tomorrow after a brilliant, long weekend away with lifelong friends so, will also have to catch up tomorrow’s installment. Have had a lovely break with friends and, like you feel ready to get going.
Strangely we were watching a great flock of birds at twilight stopping in a large nearby tree then flying off, then repeating the same behaviour a few more times. We used the Merlin app to identify that they were jackdaws. (I now need another app to identify the tree🤔)😂.

  12. Hi Barb, thanks for sharing the lovely photos and Dave’s knowledge. I did not know that. The trees are stunning and what an array of bird species in one place. we love sitting in the garden watching the birds, they come down to get seed or have a bath in the bird bath, and it is just lovely. Glad you had a great time with Grace in Paris. Looking forward to what inspiring ideas you brought back. Take care in the heat everyone. Scorcher today. Bx

  13. We are away in Sunderland at the moment and yesterday was sooo hot. Today in contrast was 17 degs. So cool but heaven. I’ve been amazed at Sunderland – didn’t know what to expect but it’s lovely – so green and clean. Hardly any litter/rubbish anywhere. I must admit I’d rather be here than down South at the moment and we met a lady in the James Herriot Museum who does Groovi!!!!
