Day 30 – August Arty Challenge – Mistakes Often Lead To Discoveries
Mistakes often lead to discoveries. Well, you couldn’t make this one up! Today I’m taking that colour-wash landscape idea a little further, exploring what else we can do with it — and somewhere along the way I managed to work on the whole thing upside down! Not deliberately. I genuinely got it wrong. But rather than abandon ship, I kept going, worked with what was in front of me, and actually discovered something along the way. And isn’t that so often the case with art? We get terribly hung up on doing things the “right” way, when sometimes the wrong turn is the very thing that shows us a new route.
You’ll also see today why I keep saying that I’m not finished with this colour-wash technique yet. Yes, I’m showing you more tricks and ideas here — but every time I play with it, another “What if…?” pops into my head. So I’ve decided we really are going to take this much further in the live online course I mentioned the other day. Think of these little Arty Challenge sessions as a taste of what’s possible. When we get together for the longer session, we’ll have the time to slow it down, explore the variables, push the ideas further and see what else we can discover together.
And perhaps that’s the lesson for today: don’t be too quick to throw something away because it hasn’t gone according to plan. Turn it round. Look at it differently. Keep going. You never know — your “mistake” might just be the beginning of your best idea yet. Mine certainly gave me a laugh today!

I have really enjoyed the August arty challenge and it’s been great to go in my craft room with an idea to start me off each time. I particularly liked the ink wash backgrounds so would definitely be up for an online course on that but sadly found that the gel plate and I are still NOT the best of friends! Still the only way is up as they say so I’m hopeful it may improve with practice.

I have loved all of the August arty challenges, and have been really inspired each day to create a mini piece of art. My favourite technique by far has been the water colour washes. Your artwork Barbara is wonderful. You always say that you aren’t a trained artist, but you produce such beautiful pieces. I am very interested in the on-line class, but not sure if I have the confidence to try it. Thanks again for all the work that you have put into giving us the August challenge.
