Looking After Ourselves – The Return of the Gray-Scalers
Hi there,
Thanks for popping in.
During lockdown, Grace and I started a little Facebook group called The Gray-Scalers. It wasn’t about achieving the perfect figure. It wasn’t about fad diets or impossible targets. It was simply a group of friends gently encouraging one another to make healthier choices, sharing the occasional victory, admitting the occasional wobble, and remembering that it’s always easier when you’re not doing it alone.
Like so many things that began during lockdown, life gradually moved on. The world opened up again, work got busier, routines changed… and somehow The Gray-Scalers quietly slipped into the background.
Well… I think it’s time we brought them back.
Over the past few months, I’ve become very aware that I’ve put on more weight than I’m comfortable carrying. This isn’t really about appearance. It’s about how I feel. My knees complain a little more than they used to. My clothes don’t fit quite as comfortably. I don’t have the same spring in my step. And if I’m honest with myself, it’s not because of medication or illness. It’s simply because I’m eating more than I need to and moving less than I should.
I’m sure many of you know exactly what I mean.
Of course, weight isn’t a simple subject. For many people, it can be affected by illness, disability, hormones or medication, and everyone’s journey is different. This isn’t about judging anybody else’s circumstances. It’s simply me taking responsibility for my own.
So Grace and I have made a little pact. We’re getting back on the scales. Not with dread or guilt. Not to punish ourselves. Just to be honest. We’re not setting impossible targets. We’re not banning chocolate forever. We’re simply choosing to make better decisions today than we did yesterday.
Grace has a lovely turn of phrase. Every now and then she’ll say something like, “Yesterday’s Grace would be really impressed with today’s Grace,” or “Twenty-year-old Grace wouldn’t believe what thirty-six-year-old Grace has achieved.”
I love that idea of looking at yourself today through yesterday’s eyes. Not beating yourself up for how far you’ve still got to go, but taking a moment to appreciate how far you’ve already come.
So back to the plan…One walk instead of another biscuit. One sensible meal instead of a second helping. One glass of water before reaching for the kettle… although I suspect tea will still feature rather heavily! And I draw the line at giving up cake altogether. Life’s about balance, isn’t it?
I’d also love The Gray Scalers Facebook Group to become a place where we share ideas that make life a little easier. Healthy recipes, clever food swaps, lunchtime inspiration, little successes and even the occasional disaster! If something works for you, why not share it?
Yesterday, for example, the grandchildren were coming over. Instead of reaching for the ice cream, I peeled a few bananas, cut them in half, stuck a lollypop stick up ’em (so to speak!), popped them in the freezer, then dipped them in melted chocolate.
What a great alternative to all those brightly coloured ice lollies and ultra-processed treats. They disappeared in no time! Simple, delicious, surprisingly filling and a little kinder to the waistline too. Then we made fruit skewers, and the kids created their own. I just laid out a few bowls of cut strawberries, blueberries, kiwi slices and little marshmallow pieces – and they built their own. It was such fun too. And I’ll tell you what: they ate a LOT more fruit than they would have believed!
I’m sure many of you have your own little tricks and favourite recipes. Let’s share them. We might just inspire one another.
And it all starts tomorrow. If you’d like to join us, we’d love to have you along.
Just click the link here, to find The Gray-Scalers Facebook page. HERE
Whether you’d like to lose a few pounds, a few stone, or simply make healthier choices, you’ll be very welcome.
There’s no pressure. No weighing in publicly unless you want to. No lectures. No judgement. Just friendly encouragement from people who understand that changing habits are much easier when you’re surrounded by kind people cheering you on. That’s what The Gray-Scalers were all about then, and that’s what they’ll be about now. We had over 200 friends in the group, so it’ll be interesting to see how many of us are still trying to squeeze back into those favourite shorts!
I had to laugh this morning, when I picked my affirmation card of the day. In fact, I picked three! From left to right…

I guess that’s the universe telling me to sort it out!
Love and Clarity,

Hi there Barb, I remember the Gray-Scalers ! During the last two weeks I’ve lost 4lb due to the heat as we haven’t been having ‘proper meals’ I’ve been having coronation chicken wraps (wonder I don’t look like one) for lunch and dinner but we’ve had strawberries and clotted cream too – sometimes with a scone and sometimes with a nice biscuit for crunch! I know once the weather is back to normal I’ll struggle to keep it off as my weight has settled at ‘too much’ ! I don’t know abut your knees the way you were on and off that chair at the Open Days, but mine improved with the collagen cream but I do have a problem with right hip ! I think it’s felt better since losing the 4lb but where has the 4lb gone I ask myself ?!
Need to walk more though and will do if it helps keep this little bit of weight off ! Hubby struggles as he has to take hormone tablets for his prostate cancer but they seem to keep it at bay so that’s the main thing, but the COPD makes his breathing difficult at times so we just plan, plan and plan again when we need to go somewhere! Let alone planning for another issue – let’s just say he’ll never get on a plane again in case he has to ‘go’ !!
Your card says I allow myself to grow – say no more, have another piece of cake !
Have a good Sunday ! love Jacqueline xx
Love the idea of frozen banana & chocolate plus the fruit skewers. As you say they probably ate far more fruit than they usually would which can’t be bad. Hope everyone has a good week as the weather seems to have cooled down a bit.
Great idea about the fruit, sounds delicious. We have fruit with our breakfast but not so much the rest of the time other than a few strawberries now and again.
I tried the link but nothing happened so I tried searching on FB but nothing came up there either. I will try again on my laptop and see what happens on there as I am on my iPad at the moment.
I have definitely put a few inches on in places I don’t need them but that is mainly down to not being so mobile these days.
Working as a group sounds a great way to pass on motivation to each other
Hi Barbara, no doubt you are watching the tennis!! I will be shortly from my craft room but I had to just catch up on the Argentina match!! So we will be facing them – could be a bit fraught at times on Wednesday evening!! Love your blog today. I for one am in the same boat as you!! During lockdown I lost 2.5 stone but doing a heck of a lot more walking, more sensible eating and cooking a lot more and more healthy meals. I am up for joining in. Sadly I picked up a bad habit during lockdown and that was that 5 O’clock somewhere thingy and had never been a drinker in all of my life and then started having a G&T!! Doomed!! I still have a drop of whisky every day around that time which I love but I can see it has added some unnecessary poundage! So yes I will start along with you tomorrow! This is the encouragemet I need to shed a few pounds before my next holiday!! Good luck to you and to me!! Lol! Enjoy the men’s final! xx
Barb, I also cannot get to your Grayscalers on FB either – can you add another link please as the “here” bit didn’t work unfortunately! Lol! x
My card said
“ I am open to new possibilities “
So maybe I should join in too. I am also feeling less comfortable in my body. Clothes a bit tight, knees complaining etc.
So I am game to join in.
Cheering us all on,
Linda x
I am definitely interested in joining in – I have tried the link and also searched on Facebook but neither worked – will try again tomorrow.
I am just so tired all the time and want to be able to wear the lovely clothes in my wardrobe!
I have been consciously cutting down on quantities and having smaller portions but I definitely need to do more exercise. I work in an office and my hobbies are parchment craft and reading so some things need to change, I guess!
It will be good to encourage each other!
This is so spooky as I looked back at the Gray Scalers site only last week.
I’d woken very early (after about 4/5hours sleep – which is the norm these days) and thought about the fellow crafter’s who seem to be having a difficult time atm and the lovely support and reassurance given via the Clarity and Groovi Worldwide sites.
It made me wonder if it would work to expand the Gray Scaler’s platform into a more generic Health and Wellbeing platform where say the Shac community could share problems, solutions and support rather than on the creativity platforms.
This is all off the top of my head and may be too problematic but thought I’d share.
I have benefitted from taking up Qigong which only happened because you drew my attention to this form of “exercise/meditation” whilst in the SHAC (many thanks for that).
Plan Stan! Count me in!
