Pottery, Tiny Houses & Mainzelmännchen Memories

Pottery, Tiny Houses & Mainzelmännchen Memories

There’s something wonderfully restorative about spending a whole day in the pottery studio. And yesterday was the day!

No agenda. No deadlines. No “must finish this by…”
Just clay, and the simple joy of making. I love getting completely immersed in the processes — be it throwing, turning, or coming up with a completely new construction.

The birds in the garden were in full song, so I decided to listen to them instead of a book or music. Opened the garage doors, and let the outside world in. Erik and Ragnar were around all day too, checking in on me, stretching out on the cool stones in the shade. Dave was also building something: a fold-down kind of serving hatch shelf for outside the kitchen window. So we can pass stuff through the window when we’re eating outside! Clever!

First, I threw and turned a couple of bowls, to warm up. It was so hot outside, that by the time I had thrown the fourth pot, the first one was pretty much ready to turn! Not hot in the garage though; just perfect. The clay I used wasn’t really ideal for throwing. It’s excellent quality for hand building, but it‘s quite gritty, so it hurts your hands on the wheel. You can see the molochite in the clay body here in the photo. See the white specks? It is superb for Raku though, so I shall make some little birds later.

I had originally set this weekend aside to create loads for our Open Days in June. But who am I kidding? This stuff takes as long as it takes — and I really cannot be putting pressure on the very thing that makes my heart sing!

So I decided to relax and simply go with the flow instead.

This Bank Holiday weekend, instead of throwing another May Day Sale party, we’ve quietly moored up the Clarity boat in a safe little harbour for a moment. Constantly rowing flat out does make your arms ache after a while! Hahaha. You understand.

So thank you. Truly. Thank you for understanding that the proverbial river rent and boat maintenance costs a packet whether you’re paddling or resting. Thank you for loving the new Drop shadow ABC we launched on Friday, and placing your orders over the weekend! It means more than you probably realise. CLICK HERE TO FIND

But back to Pottery Saturday! Wasn’t sure where I was going, but thought I’d make a little house. The only way I could think to do it was to make a template. Let’s just say the first house took nearly 5 hours, the second house took less than 2 hours. No planning permission required! Which just goes to prove that the work is in the prep! Once you know where you’re going it is so much easier! I always take photos as I go, so I have a log of what I did.

Pottery really is my happy place.

As I was pottering about, I noticed my little Mainzelmännchen sitting on the shelf nearby. I bought them years ago in an antique shop, and have always loved them, mainly because they instantly transport me back to childhood summers in northern Germany with my grandparents.

Those summers seemed to go on forever. And these funny little characters were always on the television.

If you grew up in Germany, you’ll know exactly who I mean. The Mainzelmännchen are six tiny cartoon figures created for the German TV station ZDF back in the early 1960s. They originally appeared as little transition clips between programmes and advertisements, because new broadcasting rules at the time required a clearer separation between the two.

But what began as a practical television solution somehow became part of German culture itself.

These cheerful little gnome-like characters popped up in tiny animated sketches lasting only a few seconds, usually just before the adverts started. They became beloved mascots, appearing in books, merchandise and radio stories too. Generations of children grew up watching them — including us. I shared the little dolls I found them in the shop in Heathfield with Mum and my brother Steve – and they were genuinely delighted.

Funny how the smallest things stay with you. Here’s a little selection of the Mainzelmännchen from the good old days. Would these kooky little guys still work nowadays, do you think?

So there you have it:

A little clay house, a couple of little Mainzelmännchen, a trip down Memory Lane = a Sunday blog

Sometimes the happiest days are simply the ones where we allow ourselves to make things for no particular reason at all. If I have time today, I will make a whole village! Realistically? I will be glad if the two I have constructed make it through bisque and glazing in time for June 19th!

Thank you for continuing to support what we do here at Clarity. Thank you for showing up, for reading, watching, for encouraging, for shopping with us and for valuing handmade, thoughtful things in a world that often moves far too fast — certainly for this old chick!

Hope you are enjoying the May Bank holiday weekend as much as we are…

Love always

  1. Hi Barb
Love your house. I had never seen these characters before but they are cute. For me I remember all the characters from Trumpton, Chigley and Camberwick Green!
I spent yesterday in my garden tidying up, watering and planting out some seedlings. More to do today but I also have the deckchair ready to relax.
    Enjoy your pottery.
    With love Zara xx

  2. This morning, I woke up late, well late for me. Its been a week, what with one thing and another. Im laying in bed listening to the starlings playing. I shall get up, go and make a cuppa and sit in the garden to drink it!
Mr postie didnt arrive at my house this weekend. I’d stayed up late Friday oiling the decking, ready for getting all our furniture out to enjoy some good weather and get on with Clarity Secret stuff. Alas Im assuming Royal mail let me down, i know Jilly sent it…
So my been a week, has carried into the weekend. I have tried to get all the jobs done so when Secret Squirrel stuff arrives I can crack on. Unfortunately Scotland doesnt have a end of may Bank Holiday we have nice weather and a skylark is trilling now, a cool breeze floating through the window. I do hope my crafty friends down south are staying cool.
I caught your photo yesterday, they are adorable. Your house just lovely, the last staycation we had in pitlochry the expensive gift shops were filled with clay glazed houses. Purchased one for the neighbours as a thank you for looking after the house. So your lovely Saturday play day, bought back some lovely memories…….
What a lovely idea from Dave, that mans a keeper, haha.
    Its good to make!
Enjoy the rest of you bank holiday Barb and Friends, and thank you for sharing, it was lovely to read about your joy.xxx

  3. I enjoyed reading your blog today and hearing all about those cute little characters.
It sounds like you (and Dave) had a very creative day yesterday. It’s nice to just lose yourself in something that you love doing.
Many thanks for the fabulous parcel I received yesterday with all my recent Clarity orders – I am hoping to get time to play this week.
Enjoy the rest of the weekend xxx

  4. I love these little people! Gave me a chuckle.
I spent yesterday afternoon in the garden, accompanied by birdsong, painting new signs for the church summer teas. Thank heavens for the breeze!
Enjoy the rest of the weekend everyone. Xx

  5. Love your house Barbara and your little characters are adorable. The weather here in North Wales at the moment is lovely but we have not as yet had the temperatures you seem to be having in the South at least it quite pleasant to sit outside with a cuppa listening to the birds and just letting your mind drift. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.xx

    1. Hi Barbara, Just still the 24 May – have been out all day, first mom & I went to church & then we all went over to our daughters for a late lunch. It was lovely sitting outside in the shade listening to the birds singing in the trees that surround her garden. We could have been in the middle of the countryside rather than the town, so peaceful.
Glad you had a good day playing with the clay with no prior thoughts as to what you were going to make but the result was fabulous. Love your little clay house & the tales of the little figures that you have next to it.
As Ken says there is no pressure for you to produce loads of pieces for the Open Days but if you do that’s a bonus for us. Just a thought but if you end up with only the 2 houses why not have one each day & hold a raffle so everyone has a chance to win one. Perhaps surplus monies to what you would have charged could go to a charity of your choice.
Anyway enjoy the rest of the weekend break & tell Dave I like the outside shelf for the kitchen window – a great idea x

  6. Hi Barbara,
Pleased you are having time for yourself and enjoying the process, very important. I am visiting a garden near Narberth with friends later, until then watering plants and staying indoors
    with Groovi to play!
    Enjoy this lovely weather.
    Jane

  7. Good morning on this bright sunny day, I’ve already had breakfast in the garden – cuppa and a two bar Kit Kat that is! Was going to ask if you were making a street and then saw you’re on the way to a village today ! Fab! Little figures remind me of Smurfs! Managed to finish my PTC this morning and now going to do the PTC in the garden, keeping it simple is my aim today. Love the little shelf Dave has made for you, great idea for your set up! It’s lovely to see our Ted finding different shady spots for the firs time – some are the same as Mikey chose (although his was mainly a cushioned chair under the brolly!) and some different ones, his younger body probably gets into spaces easier! I have to put sunscreen on his white ears! Have a lovely bank holiday weekend and look forward to seeing your village! Lots of love to both xx

  8. Morning Barb, I love reading your blog, it always makes me smile, sharing creativity, stories from childhood, what you are making, what Dave is making. I love the little house, they would be great over a battery tealight. Have a lovely bank holiday weekend everyone, whatever you are doing. Bx

  9. I love your pottery Barbara.
Looking forward to seeing you at the open day.
I love the drop shadow words, please could we have some in Groovi?

  10. Glad you had some ‘me’ time Barbara and had fun. Well done Dave. Great idea.Love the little people too.
Please, please can we have some words going vertical.. I am sure they would sell well.
    See you next week.

  11. Your little people in front of the house are adorable. They resemble my felt house-elf which made us both chuckle. I look forward to seeing your village when it is done. The pots look great too.
I got up early this morning, first time without pain, and got all my ironing done before it got too hot. It got to 82f indoors and 116f in the conservatory yesterday. We have fans on all round the house to try to cool it down and hope it doesn’t get too hot later this afternoon.
I’m feeling better every day and doing more around the house so the spring clean is now well underway. It may take me until August to finish but I can and I will get there. Thank goodness I have the calmness of Clarity to fill in the gaps when I need to.
I have received two large parcels recently so I’ve had great fun sorting it all out and trying things before putting everything away. The brush and pen pots have been put to good use and my desk now looks very tidy.
Time for lunch now, chilled melon and prawns or a crab salad, will have to ask hubby which he prefers.
Have a great weekend everyone, enjoy the sunshine.

  12. Thank you, Barb, for a magic little Blog this morning. Those cheery little characters reminded me of the Halas & Batchelor animated ads and public information films on British TV in the 50s and 60s! Remember it’s your “Happy Place” not your “Work Place”! Create from clay what you want to, for you. If you end up with enough to take to the Open Days or pop on the PinkyGray website, so be it, but don’t start with that premise.
My Affirmation Card for today is “I Trust the Journey I am on”. And I trust my Clarity Journey implicitly! I trust in your good self and your Dream Team to provide the innovation, imagination and the inspiration to allow me to continue on my Creative journey. So I am very happy to trust in and support the quality, friendship and bonhomie that emanates from Clarity Towers.
Take care and enjoy your Happy Place 😊

  13. Glad you had a fab pottery day yesterday!
My friend came round and we spent the day doing parchment craft together – an excellent day indeed!

I have had a week’s holiday this last week and also have the bank holiday tagged on to the end of it tomorrow which is great!
We had intended to have lots of days out walking in the countryside and in beautiful gardens but my husband has been unwell for most of the time so that hasn’t happened – still, at least I was not at work (!) and have been able to do loads of parchment craft….!!

  14. Sometimes you’ve just got to spend time doing what makes you happy. Park everything else & forget about it for a while. Enjoy the beautiful weather and chill out xxx

  15. Pleased you had a lovely pottery day yesterday. Love your tiny houses and super cute figures. Been getting up extra early to take my dog her walk, it’s so peaceful and calm. Enjoy the rest of the weekend everyone. Stay cool and take care. xx

  16. Oh so lovely reading your blog today Barbara! It is too hot outdoors so came in and took a look around your lovely website and FB pages and then your Blog! Loving the window shelf! Great idea!! Love your bowls you have made and your little characters. The house is just perfect!! They cost a few bob similar in the shops! Have a lovely weekend Barb. x

  17. I do love reading your blog it always makes me laugh and the little cottages are soooo cute, I imagine they will be very popular if you are able to make some to sell. I also love Dave’s serving shelf idea, everyone could do with a Dave!
Enjoy the rest of your weekend xx

  18. It’s so funny how certain things can transport you back in time to a younger version of yourself. Music often does that for me – Mungo Jerry’s “In the summertime ” always reminds me of my dad’s new stereo speakers going up on the wall, and us sitting on the sofa looking back and forth at where the sound was coming from, like a tennis match 😂

  19. Oh, dear Barbara, you have no idea just how happy your blog made me today albeit rather late in the day – thank you so much for everything you do, do so well.
Mainzelmännchen are part of my life too, being German. I have two sitting in my living room on the window sill as they still give me joy in my 9th decade. I have happily lived in this country for over 60 years, sadly now without my beloved husband. Claritystamp products have entered my life too many years ago – absolutely love them. My wish to attend one of your craft days is regrettably quite impossible for me being somewhat disabled. May all you attendees again have a very happy, productive time 🙏.
Wishing you, Barbara, your family and Company continued happiness and success. With love 🤗 xx

  20. Regrettably my very appreciative comment I wrote earlier was not posted 🙁 … So I simply say Thank You, ThankYou for the wonderful work you, dear Barbara, and your Company do to make us crafters happy. Wishing you continued happiness and success. With love xx 🤗

  21. Not sure why my post went where it did as a reply to Catherine Young.
Tried to delete it but it doesn’t let you so it will have to stay where it is x

  22. Enjoyed reading your blog today and, although full of activities being undertaken, it felt very calming. I think you have the balance right between “must do” and “want to do”.
Love your houses, reminds me of a pottery house I bought for my sister many years ago. it’s still on display at her house and I still love it.
I really enjoyed the you tube clip: very succinct ideas but very amusing – German efficiency I suppose.😂
Should have been away visiting friends this weekend but hubby wasnt well (a virus with chest infection we think plus fainting in the GP surgery on Friday) so where we are normally a 50/50 split for chores, I’ve been running around like the proverbial blue one: which is one reason why I really appreciated reading your calming blog.
Take care and enjoy your day off – if you have such a thing😂.

  23. In Mainz all traffic lights in town are Mainzelmaenchen. Great fun! Great memories! Really loving a Bank Holiday with glorious weather!! Can’t remember a May Bank Holiday with good weather like this!

  24. Love those little German characters – I think we’re all formed by characters from when we were small, aren’t we? For me it will be the Woodentops, the Flowerpot Men, Trumpton & Camberwick Green. For my son, it’s The Herbs!.
Love your house – you can’t push the river and it will take as long as it takes.

  25. Missed this on Sunday driving home on our holiday. Warmer here than on the continent where we have been. Just had a bit of a rain shower which has cooled things down a bit . Going to see what Clarity goodies I have missed this month

  26. Am enjoying your ‘new’ blog very much, Barbara. Just as you have found your rhythm, I have found mine – about a week after you’ve posted! 😆
The Mainzelmännchen are adorable. Personally, I’d love to see them on tv just before putting the kettle on or nipping to the toilet.
They reminded me of Charlie, the ginger cat who featured in a host of public safety announcements in the 70s. Whenever my friend & I were about to do something daft/daring, one of us would pipe up, “Charlie says……” – good old Charlie probably saved us from a few near misses!
