Reset to rest? You bet!

Reset to rest? You bet!

Hi there.

Thanks for popping in. It’s been a funny old day here. Woke up with the lark and decided to have a day away from work stuff. It’s always good to use the Sunday before the Monday (back to work) to reset, reframe, recalibrate. Call it what you will! There are so many buzz words nowadays for just plain having a day off !

Now this is where it gets interesting. YOUR idea of having a day off is probably not anything like MY idea of having a day off. Read on.

I made a mental list of things I wanted to accomplish – starting with cleaning the bathrooms. Ok. Fair enough, I hear you say. She’s probably not had time all week, so the weekend is her only chance. Yep, absolutely. BUT, there’s cleaning – and then there’s cleaning. Hands up who strips down to their bra and knickers and gets in the shower to clean it. And who takes a toothbrush with them, to clean the grouting? Hahahahaha. Yep. It’s official. She really is mad. But two hours later – the shower is spotless!

Bedroom blitzed and dusted while I was on the phone, chatting to my lovely friend, Linda Williams. Had a good catch up. Laundry in full throttle and drying on the line, towels all washed, dried and airing on the Aga.

Next up. Cooking. My world famous German Potato Salad – tick. Fresh Carrot and Ginger soup – tick. Homemade German plum crumble – tick. Diet?? What diet?! That’s going to keep us going all week!

And now, I am done. Not done in. Just done. So, once Dave has finished mowing the lawn, (hahaha – he’s mad too!) I shall go and have a little siesta in the sunshine on the lilo.

But has this busy Sunday served its purpose? For sure. I can only speak for myself, but to declutter and clean our living space makes me feel good about my Life. It gives me a sense of control, a feeling of tidy serenity. Massive stress reduction. My Clarity job is such a thinking job – more so now than ever. But housework/cooking is something I can do without having to engage my brain much at all. It’s like a mechanical process, which allows me to recharge my mental batteries.

Now I know that most folks would think that a spa treatment, or a roast at the pub, or a day at the coast might present a better day off. But for me, I just want to be at home, in my own four walls, with my hubby. That’s my idea of serenity and calm after a hectic week.

Ahh. The lawn mower has stopped.

Time for a schnooze.

Love always,

Barb x x x

PS No SHAC tomorrow, remember? Not till October now. Having a little Summer break. Let’s stay in touch here on the blog. By the way, there is a super Groovi step by step by Maggie Byford over on the Claritymattersblog today! Click HERE to find

  1. Funny how we are all different but cleaning is the last thing I would do to ‘wind down’. It’s usually crafting but I have to feel 100% – well at least 90%. I know I will feel like it soon though.
Enjoy your SHAC break. Plenty of time for me to catch up.
    Take care.

  2. Hi Barb …… tidy serenity, I get it, that’s me too 😊. Enjoy the potato salad and plum crumble. I know how good they both are. Time for feet up. xx Sis

  3. How strange that you should post the pic of your plum crumble today. I made two blackberry and apple pies and was thinking I would search your blog for the plum crumble recipe, which I think you put up last year? Hope you’ve got your feet up now!!

  4. A day spent cleaning sounds good to me, such a sense of achievement when you have finished, especially if it’s been a long while since you’ve had time to do a proper job. I’m looking forward to some proper deep cleaning when I get back from Weymouth next week. I’m actually looking forward to that more than the holiday ! lol
    Enjoy your break Barbara xx

  5. The plum crumble and potato salad sound delicious. I know what you mean about feeling better when the house has been cleaned and decluttered it does help mentally. I’ve got to be in the right mood to do it though otherwise I start, make a mess and don’t finish. I’ve got to ration my spoons as well (MS thing) Do feel heaps better when it’s clean and tidy. Oh and yes to the shower cleaning attire 🤣.

  6. OMG, absolutely the same, not mad just honest, cleaning the bathroom and or shower I do the same, why would I get my clothes wet, there’s deep cleaning in the shower usually naked. I have a kartcher vac, which I use daily after having a shower, it helps keep grout dry in-between meaning less chance of mould growing, but I’m with you on that sense of achievement and control.
I can’t relax and enjoy a weekend as much as I do when I’ve manage a good deep clean.
When drawers and cupboards are clean it makes me happy.
I had in mind today to make a quiche, but I really couldn’t get my head into gear today to do much. I need a week off from my holiday and work to get my head back in the game for work work.
    enjoy your food! looks yummy.

  7. Yep…..that’s me taking a tooth brush into the shower to clean the grouting and like you I do find it satisfying to give the house a good going over especially if life has taken over & it’s only had a ‘lick and a promise ’ for a while. Enjoy the rest of your day & I can’t wait for the Shac to start up again in October xxx

  8. That sounds like a perfect home day! Just the kind I like too. I clean my bathroom with ‘Pink Stuff’. Easier than a toothbrush and leaves a film so the water repels. Sunday lunch in the garden with family today – also one of my favourite things. Just tidied and now for my schnooze in the garden – the wind is still warm so where’s my lounger. Oh and a practice run for my up do for a wedding I’m attending next week – my DIL so good with hair – plenty of practice on my beautiful 2 granddaughters. A liven day all round.

Enjoy your evening Barbara and Dave! And your food sounds yummy!

  9. I’m right there with you, that was me yesterday bra and knickers and a vest top. Standing in the shower, tooth brush in hand getting into all those nooks and crannies….. VERY rewarding. Toilet and sink gleaming too. Washing done, dried, ironed and away……It’s just so rewarding. Dusting and hoovering today and now cooking a roast chicken dinner …. nothing like it.

It’s my Birthday tomorrow so with a clear conscience knowing all the cleaning and washing is done, we’re off to Wells for the day. There’s a great little bakers that sell the best Cornish pasties and I love sitting in the grounds of the cathedral watching the swans they’re fascinating cos they ring a bell when it’s feeding time.

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday, your dishes look scrummy xXx

  10. Sunday is a day I set aside to go to church, get husband to do a bbq. Enjoy the sunshine in the garden with some craft on the go. Very nice.

  11. Glad to hear you’ve managed a Day Off today, even if it’s not my idea of a day off! Not sure my Sunday has been a day off, as we had a visit from our grandchildren – more a full on day! Full on, but lots of fun! Rose is 5 and Jack is 1 – both full of energy and they make sure Grandpa gets his exercise! They’ve just left, so now I can start having a day off, what’s left of it! At least I should sleep well tonight! I treated myself to a couple of small Barens the other day, which hopefully will come in handy when I take part in the Lighthouse paper collage online workshop! Enjoy the rest of your day off, Barb and Dave, and that very tasty looking food you’ve prepared!

  12. I agree. I would rather have been cleaning than journeying to Whitstable to be unable to park and then back through endless traffic. Maybe being busy on my allotment would have been more restful. Have a good week

  13. No…..I’m not saying anything (there are folks that think if you are retired, you have EVERY day off). Not so, if you have a house to keep, that is your ‘job’. The kitchen is permanently open. The cat does not care if it is a weekend or bank holiday, as long as she gets fed and we go for our walk, that’s all there is. I rest my case!
    Love
    Maggie (York UK)

  14. Our day started up at 7 a.m. and a CT scan for hubby at 8.50 a.m. Sunday is the day to go, no traffic and easy easy parking and back home for 9.30 and even picked up a croissant on way home, seems ages go now.

Just sat down after doing a bbq for 3 neighbours (well 4 as we invited her next door too!). we had a thoroughly good chat and enjoyed the food, we went to theirs a few weeks go so we invited them back, just finished clearing up, dishwasher on.

Now I have to clear the kitchen sides ready for the tiler to come at 7.30 a.m. to do the tiling to finish off our kitchen (well apart from a bit of painting but that can wait a bit!). It’s like the Hokey Cokey with our, taking things out, putting them back and taking them out !

Glad you had a nice day, it’s definitely good to have a housekeeping day, as you say it’s on autopilot and sometimes takes longer to think about than doing.

Cooking looks yummy too, think we’ll be living off bbq leftovers for a couple of days ! Enjoy the coming days.

    Xxxx

  15. What a result, with you all the way, its such a feeling of accomplishment, cleanliness and satisfaction. Hope you enjoyed your nap in the garden admiring Dave’s cut lawn

  16. Each to their own! I was panicking because church was going on longer than usual and I wanted to be back home before the family arrived for lunch, and to drop off the tortoise for the week! It all worked out well. But, like Anne, we have been to Whitstable and back again, when we couldn’t park. Have decided it is cheaper to go by train, than pay for 3 hours in the car park!

  17. Intrigued by your German Potato Salad. Wonder if there are any similarities with Mike’s mum’s Dutch Potato Salad. Sheila (Mike’s mum) wrote the recipe for me many years ago but I only recovered it in one of my handbags days after she passed away. Now residing in my mum’s hand written recipe book, a relic from my Marr College,Troon Chemistry ink exercise jotter. History!

  18. Mmmmmm plum crumble, my favourite!
I made minced beef hash – it was delicious and there’s enough for the next 3 days too!

    Housework urgh!
After church, I read a few chapters of my book with a cup of tea, put away some Groovi plates from my last project and then continued my parchment embroidery – lovely and relaxing but gosh it takes a long time……!
Back to work tomorrow but next week it’s a bank holiday, hurrah!!!

    Take care and breathe…..!xxxx

  19. A day off is any one that recharges your batteries, so more power to your elbow! Cleaning and decluttering is always so satisfying – I’ve got a lot of that to get to grips with here! Managed a bit of time in my craft room this afternoon, working on some secret stuff – feeling weary after my long day yesterday.
I’ve got a quieter week ahead, so planning to catch up on a lot of life laundry…
Hope you enjoyed the potato salad and crumble!

  20. As we couldn’t go on our usual walk, as the village’s Treasured Vehicle show has been on in the field where we usually go, we had a longer dog walk than usual with a couple of friends, washing out, in later, all dried, and for me a hours stint on the jigsaw stall to raise money for our village church, a wander round all the cars, tractors and motorbikes, then back to a relaxing afternoon on the sofa with my best four legged friend. hopefully, while you are having your break, I shall be able to catch up with the shac. xx

  21. I couldn’t agree more. Cleaning – not housework: in my mind there’s a big difference is great for resetting. The only trouble is, these days, I don’t seem to have the puff to do all I wake up wanting to do but the new mantra in this house is “tomorrow’s another day”. We have an acceptance of the fact that both me and my lovely other half don’t have the good health we once had so have to pace ourselves.
The plus side to that is the lack of physical energy means more time to sit and craft.

  22. Hello Barb, yep this household is like that too, especially the shower and the bathroom. We are getting older and certainly don’t always find time to do everything on the to do list. We celebrated our 22nd Wedding Anniversary (was actually Saturday), went out for a lovely Sunday Roast lunch at one of our local pubs. Great day just enjoying each others company. I may say Hubby was fascinated by the card I made for him, having cut a heart shape out of mask material and doing a little scene inside it with the woodland, moon, cloud masks, and the little wee folk on the bench with 2 of the quote stamps and a few word stickers, so I was well chuffed. Hope you had a lovely little nap in the garden. Mmmm, German potato salad, I know I have your recipe, as I have made it before, think it is time for some more. Take care everyone. Bx

  23. When I’m feeling like everything’s getting on top of me I too blitz the house. Enjoy the fruit of your labour ; I’ll have custard with my crumble please.

  24. Spending a few days with family- 4 generations so missed this last night so catching up whilst waiting for the other 3 generations to wake up 😂. Also no real housework for a few days although when I am in someone else’s house it always feels different. As to cleaning the shower less clothes the better & we discovered a gadget for doing the grout – I can only describe it as a large electric toothbrush but it does a great job.
Enjoy your break and your trip to America for the wedding, by the way a deviation from the diet is often good as it kick starts the metabolism ( or so we were told ) Meanwhile I have a couple of SHAC projects to finish off so I will be ready for starting the letter L in October xx

  25. Spent Sunday morning doing a mountain of ironing, very satisfying to see it all done. I hate housework but when I do it it has to be CLEAN and hopefully not messed up too soon by my resident muck magnet who is the untidiest person I know.
Crumble – rhubarb & ginger, apple and spices, apricot and almond – all favourites here. I find creative cooking almost as relaxing as parchment craft. Unfortunately we are both having to lose a bit more weight and so are eating less but now OH is on oxygen I am having to take on some things he used to do so getting a bit more exercise now.Fortunately he still likes to do the Sunday roast but then sleeps for several hours to recover. Needless to say I have to do the clearing up!!!!!
We are getting ready now to go to the hospital for hubbies lung scan this afternoon, I’m full of nerves which won’t go away until we get the results so no cleaning today.
No respite tomorrow but that’s another story.
    Bye for now.

  26. Cleaning and de-cluttering is good for the mind. I had a clean of our bathroom. I do the shower when I’m finished with it so leaving it nice and sparkly. Bath mat and towel get washed together.
My creative mind was completely reset at the retreat and certainly that helped with secret stuff this weekend. The weather here is crafting weather so no distractions wanting to go outdoors! It’s too chilly to sit outside!
You’ve a busy schedule ahead of you so I’m glad you’ve made the sensible decision to have a SHAC break. You’ve enough to do without driving the bus there too!
Lots of love to you and Dave. Xxxx

  27. Having a peaceful day at home doing whatever you want to do, clean, read, …. is rejuvenating. Glad you enjoyed your day.

  28. That crumble looks delicious! I clean the shower and sink with a toothbrush for the nooks and crannies too, and usually in my undies or pj’s. Love a good tidy up and organising session to quiet my mind. Need to tackle my craft space next, but sorted my wardrobe yesterday and love how tidy it is now!!!

  29. A very mixed day yesterday. Made a huge bowlful of your German potato salad, which was very well received. The down side was in the post. A parking charge for Clackett Lane service station on the way down to the retreat. I am about to appeal against it. That was the first service station I could get into as all the others I had passed were closed for some reason and by then I was too tired to drive safely. It could be an interesting effort. xxxx
