There once was a fairy called Mary…

There once was a fairy called Mary…

Hi there.
Thanks for dropping in.
Where did the day go?
One minute I was engrossed in prep for the TV on Sunday,
the next it was pitch black outside.
So before I call it a day,
here’s a little card I made to showcase
some new and rather special little stamps
which are coming up on the Sunday Show:
Our new
Wee Folk Fairies, Elves & Whimsy.
When the first Wee Folk landed,
there was much excitement,
and thousands of them went to happy homes all over the country.
Then our friends and fairies in Never never land
said they would like to play too, get arty, help.
So on Sunday, they are joining me on the telly bright and early for their first airing.
I managed to talk a few of them into popping on here tonight,
to say hi.
They’re quite shy,
so don’t make any sudden movements…
Let’s take a look at the background…
The circles were made with the moon masks,
stencils brushes and various ink pads:
Spun Sugar
Tattered Rose
Tumbled Glass
Stream
Shabby Shutter

Just move the moons around the Gelli Card,
brushing colour through the holes,

until the card is full of colourful circles.
Cut a panel.
The Rooftops mask reminds me so much of Peter Pan!
So let’s get it out…
Colourful bunting.
Wild Plum Adirondack certainly packs a punch!

Two rows if you please.
Rooftops required.
Black Soot Distress or Pitch Black Adirondack
with a make-up sponge.

Outline the bunting with a fineline Micron Pen.

Add a little fairy dust with a clear Sakura Gel Pen

London smog round the edges,
and now the scene is set for our new visitors.

Here’s one!
She is so pretty!
Aha! And here are the boys!
We decided to invited the boys to the party, too.
Well actually, the girls insisted.
Said they were fed up dancing round their handbags.
Amazing little sets –
you’ll see the tiny bluebells and toadstools on Sunday too.
Amazing here is from Word Chain No. 9
Time to lighten up!
Add a light layer of Moonlight white Brilliance to the whole piece, by lightly tapping the ink pad all over the card.
Go easy though ; don’t want to startle the wee fairies…
Yes, they look like they’re having fun now!

It’s a busy piece,
but they say your artwork reflects your mood, don’t they!
Oh no!
I can feel a limerick coming on…
There once was a fairy called Mary,
whose legs were frightfully hairy!
lalalalala
lalalalala
lalalalalalalalala
over to you !
Let’s have some fun.
Finish the limerick below
and then tomorrow we will pick a winner
and send that poet a £20 gift voucher.
hahaha – I can’t wait to read these…
much love,

    1. There once was a fairy called Mary
whose legs were so frightfully hairy,
      As nothing could faze her
she set to with a razor
so now she's no longer so scary.

  1. Hi Barb,
Fantastic artwork, such pretty colours and wonderful new little fairies.
I can't believe that you're on C&C on Sunday – it can't be nearly March already.
    Now for the limerick :-
    She shaved them quite often,
    And hoped they would soften,
Then she'd be happy and quivery, not scary.

  2. There once was a fairy called Mary
    Whose legs were frightfully hairy
    Hairy but light
    Didn't slow down her flight
Just earned her the nickname Scary!!

Looking forward to the shows Barbara

  3. There once was a fairy called Mary,
    whose legs were frightfully hairy!

She dropped leg wax in her melt pot
But it sizzled over and was red pepper hot

Her little face went moonlight white and was now a very Wary Fairy

  4. There once was a fairy called Mary,
    whose legs were frightfully hairy!
    She had to stay inside,
her legs in order to hide,
She loved to paint and craft,
but ended up becoming quite daft!

ROFL!! How fun! Love your new stamps! You did a great job showcasing them.

  5. There once was a fairy called Mary

not as slim but as hairy and that´s scary!

    hope you like it
    Rolf xxx

  7. There once was a fairy called Mary
    Whose legs were frightfully hairy
    She gave them a shave
So she could go to a rave
For she wasn't your average fairy.

Just my simple offering I hope it raises a smile.

She lifted her skirt to flash 'em
And not a care in the land did she have

    Take care, Nellie

  14. Hi Barbara oh what lovely fairies and artwork too. I love how you have used the moon mask for the background. I've just finished reading my daughters extended project paper – 21 pages on bio printing (proof reading time!) so I'm a bit mind blown at the moment but here goes!
There once was a fairy called Mary
    Who's legs were incredibly hairy
    She fell to her knees
    Crying 'wax please'
As shaving would be just to scary!

Well, I tried! Have a good chuckle.
    Love Diane xxx

  15. Love the fairies! and great tutorial, thank you. Now for some poetry………………….

  19. There once was a fairy called Mary
    Whose legs were frightfully hairy
When she flew through the air,
    The wind fluffed her hair
And she looked more like a monkey than a fairy.

Can't wait to see these stamps on Sunday

  20. There once was a fairy called Mary
    Whose legs were freightfully hairy
    She put up her feet

  25. Hello Barb – love the fairies so roll on Sunday. Here goes …
There once was a fairy called Mary

As now Hairy Mary was scary!

  26. Love these new stamps!
There once was a fairy called Mary
    Whose legs were frightfully hairy
She tried to use an e-pil-a-tor
So the boys wouldn't all hate her
And instead would ask to date her!

    1. Oh! Melanie, that took me back a bit. What a big grin you brought to my face. Hairy Maclary, Bottomly Potts, Muffin McLay and the gang. One of my daughters favourite books….she was 29 this month!! Anyway, back to the present and I've forgotton what I was going to write for Barbara! To late now….must turn off the light and try to remember who was the one with a very low tum!!!

    2. Yes Donna …. and a great one about chaos at the vets. What a fun set of stamps they would make!!…. (Barbara?!!!)
I'm off for a rummage in the attic to see what I can find. Melanie you have taken me back 25 years! And I still can't remember my rhyme for Barbara…..sometthing about going home for the shaving foam….never mind, what fun images in my mind from reading everyone else's replies.

    3. Donna and Chum, I've never heard of those books but they sound fun. What were they called? I'm from the US and maybe they are from the UK but would like to look them up. I just love childrens books.

    4. Hello! Ronny. Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy was the first I think. Slinky Malinky was a gem as was Hairy Maclary's Rumpus At The Vet. I found out today that there are several I missed, written after my daughter outgrew them….maybe now I'll remind her and she will grow back into them! The author is Lynley Dodd from New Zealand.

  27. Looking forward to meeting these new wee folk !

there was once a fairy called Mary
    Whose legs were frightfully hairy
She got fed up with waxing
Cos she found it too taxing
So now she just doesn't carey

  28. There once was a fairy called Mary
    Whose legs were frightfully hairy
    But she didn't cry
    She just narrowed her eyes
And wore plaits at her ankles. So there! 🙂

p.s. fab stamps. Look forward to seeing more on Sunday.

  29. There once was a fairy called Mary.
    Whose legs where incredibly hairy.
An elf called Vic said he'd lend her a BIC
But the hairs on her legs were too thick for the BIC and poor Mary couldn't feel any lower.
The BIC broke and Vic was quite choked, he said what you really need is a mower!"
By now, she'd had enough of Vic and his BIC! In fact, she thought him a bit of a "d…k!
After all, what any girl wants is some warm wax and a stick! Ta Dah! Love the stamps. Xxxxx

  30. There once was a fairy called Mary
    Who's legs were frightfully hairy
    She flew through the sky
With her skirts held high and
Frightened all the cows in the dairy !

What do you expect for just after midnight! Lovely card -and looking forward to Subday! Xx

  31. Whoa more great stamps. There really is something about the sillouette stamps that I really love. Especially these wee folk and fairies. As for the limerick, here goes

    And now she's a fairy who's lairy.

  32. There once was a fairy called Mary,
    whose legs were frightfully hairy!
    You have to congratulate her,
For she looked like a tarantula,
Poor Mary is now quite contrary!

Loving the wee fairies and elves, and looking forward to the show. Xx

  33. Oh dear Barbara, I just love fairies. This will probably break the bank. I already have loads. How will I resist? Lovely card, really like the circles & how you've built up from them to a fairy tale scene. Truly. AMAZING!! xx

Here's my attempt at your limerick.

There once was a fairy called Mary
    Whose legs were frightfully hairy
    She discovered her fairy dust
    Now the pixies all lust
After the incredibly smooth leggedl Mary.

  34. Love this piece of art work yes very busy but so are you.
There once was a fairy called Mary
    Whose legs were frightfully hairy.
How dare she think she could get away.
Till one day she came across the dairy.
Where the cows bathed her in milk.
And then all the hairs were like silk.
And she flew away all scary.

I love these new stamps look forward to Sunday xx

  35. Wow I love love love these new stamps!!!!!
There once was a fairy called Mary
    Whose legs were frightfully hairy
    In her dismay
    She flew to Barbara Gray
She said "what can you do"?
BG said " my Wee Folk can help you"
    "They will bring you luck"
The Wee Folk began a magical pluck
Now Mary is no longer a hairy fairy! YAY 🙂

I can't wait until Sunday, I will be watching as usual with my partners PayPal account password 🙂

  36. I am very late commenting tonight. I love the wee folk and I will love the wee fairies just as much.
I am not a poet but here goes!
There once was a fairy called Mary
    Whose legs were frightfully hairy
    She dyed them pea green
    And danced like a queen
A sight that is seen very rarely.
    X Chris

  37. Love the card Barbara and everything Clarity, looking forward to your show on Sunday as always.
    Here goes my poem.

There once was a fairy called Mary
    Whose legs were frightfully hairy
    A disguise she tried
    "This doesn't work" she cried
"Cos my beard is just as scary"

    Best wishes Karen

  38. Hi Barbara, you're sooo funny, and what a bright, fun, lovely piece of artwork this is. As you know – me no good at anything poem /limerick, couldn't even make an attempt if my life depended on it!!! But I have enjoyed reading everyone's attempts. Guess what, I've just realised I don't own any fairy stamps, better put that one to rights, eh!!! But I do have real fairy friends, will that do? I've got garden fairies, that from time to time give me a new bulb or new bit of plant that I've never ever seen come up before, stuff that doesn't grow anywhere else in my garden, just suddenly some random new thing that I've then got to look up to work out what it is! ;-). And a couple of years ago I had a gate fairy too! Folk, especially the postie leave my front gate wide open a lot, which obviously I can't go out to close and I don't have anyone come that often so it would just have to get left until a worker did come. But then it started being shut again when no one had been to my door, it must be a gate fairy. One day I was looking out the window and a mum and wee toddler are walking past, the mum carrying on up the hill while her wee boy is quietly and thoughtfully closing all the gates as he went past :-). My window was open and I wanted to shout thank you to him but didn't want to startle him so just had to watch in silence with a smile on my face and a warm feeling inside. I wish I'd known which cottage he lived in as I wanted to put a wee present through his letterbox to thank my wee gate fairy, but I had no way of finding out, unfortunately. No matter how bad things get, if you look, you can always find something to make you see that there's still some good in humanity, in the world out there 🙂

    Love Brenda xx

    1. Hi Brenda. What a lovely kind gate fairy you have, what a cute little lad : ) We can forget that we usually only get to hear and see about the bad people in this world but there are far and away many many more good kind ones out there, if only we take the time to look : ) Take care, Mrs B

  39. I adore fairies, even the hairy ones, I'm looking forward to Sunday to what gems you come up with, here is my effort to your ditty

There once was a fairy called Mary

getting down the stairs was quite scary.

Thanks for a great post. Take care.
