You Hung the Moon – A Gelpress Tutorial.

You Hung the Moon – A Gelpress Tutorial.

Hi there,

Thanks for popping in. As promised, a fresh print, straight out of the oven, using a 6×6 inch Gelpress plate, some acrylic paint, a couple of our stencils and one of my all time favourite stampsets: You hung the Moon. Which you can buy with my all ALL time favourite stamp – the Flyaway Boy…

These two stamps remind me of my kids, Grace and Mark, of when they were younger. Whenever I play with them, the stamps, I think about the kids – and that puts me in a good place.

If there was a Feel Good section on the website, these stamps would be on the front page! And because they are bold silhouette stamps, they work brilliantly with ANY background – loud and bright, or gentle and subtle.

Anyway, let’s get going with the step by step tutorial. There are a few steps to be sure!

  • Squirt a penny size amount of the Phthalo Turquoise acrylic paint onto the craft mat,
  • roll it and spread it with the brayer,
  • then lightly roll the loaded brayer over the 6x6inch Gelpress, which is mounted on one of our Clarity Megamounts. KEY ingredient.
  • place the stencil on the wet paint.

I designed this stencil. Unravelled twine, it’s called. It comes with a second one: Rocky Block. Buy this one today, get the other one free. Or if you prefer, buy the Rocky Block, and THIS one is yours as a gift!

Anyway. Back to the tutorial…

  • Blot the Gelpress lightly with a piece of copy paper, lifting off some of the turquoise paint.
  • The paint is still wet. Lay the delicate Floral Forest stencil over the top, and blot again.
  • The blotted piece is very cool too. And there are little flowers in the background on the Gelpress…

Same deal today. Buy one of these and get the second one FREE. Click here.

We have got the floral stencils framed and unframed.

Both are great. Depends what you want to do with them. The framed ones are excellent for layering up and alignment.

  • Peel off the floral stencil.
  • Once the paint you can see is dry to the touch, quickly peel off the twine stencil, and
  • blot again with a fresh piece of copy paper. The paint underneath the stencil, which wasn’t exposed to the air, is still wet, and so when you blot it, you will pull that paint in a print, leaving a fabulous random pattern, with random leaves and flowers in the background.

Now to pull that paint off the Gelpress. But I want to make a window, an aperture, so let’s use the shape masks…

  • Place the square mask off centre on a piece of Clarity Stencil card.
  • Squirt a penny size amount of Buff Titanium paint onto your craft mat, and once again, spread it out with a brayer.
  • Cover the design on the Gelpress with the paint.
  • Flip the Gelpress over (this is why the Megamount is so invaluable)
  • Place the painty side of the Gelpress down on the card with the mask, aligning the sides of the card with the sides of the Megamount. Same size: 7x7inches
  • Flip back and rub the back of the white card, to help transfer the paint print.
  • Carefully peel the card off the Gelpress plate.
  • Peel off the mask and stick onto a clean piece of copy paper. Let’s wipe it clean while the paint is still wet. Replace on its carrier sheet for next time.
  • Now you have a pristine aperture. Of course, you could make this any shape, any size. That’s why the shape masks are so cool.

Now to tie the aperture back into the outside design…

  • Place the twine stencil over the artwork, and
  • lightly brush a teal ink into the centre, leaving the middle white.
  • Use a make up sponge to drag a little yellow in off the artwork too.
  • Remove the stencil and use another make up sponge with Aged Stucco (GREAT COLOUR) to blend the edge.
  • You can wipe the ink off the acrylic paint frame with a damp paper towel, and it will come back to bright.
  • Stamps next. Use the indexing sheet that the stamps come on to figure out where to stamp. ie layout and composition.
  • Stamp the main figure into position with a Black Archival ink. Permanent ink like this is fine for stamping on an acrylic background.
  • Add the sentiment. Beautiful.
  • Trim the white edge around the print back,
  • Run a black Sharpie pen round all 4 sides,
  • colour in the words with a matching teal or turquoise colour,
  • Mount on a white 8×8 inch cardblank

I hope you like it. It isn’t hard. The most difficult part is figuring out how much paint you need and the drying time.

Too much paint, and the print won’t pull. Too little paint, the the card will stick to the Gelpress plate. Do two or three , and make a mental note of how much paint you are using versus the result.

Here’s my stash, plus the masks….

We’ve attached super saver bloggy prices to this tutorial too. So have a look… HERE and if you have missed out on any of the previous tutorials, you can find them all in one place HERE

Stay safe.

Love always

  2. I’ve just used a whole stencils from the NDC for the very first time and quite pleased with the result. Must get braver and get the geli plate out, I’m a bit scared of it but now I’ve made myself more space it might be better . Love the stencils and have most of this already so no excuse ! X

  3. I don’t do this sort of craft, but I love what you and others achieve. This is a great tutorial.
Well, this morning I not only joined in the SHAC, as usual, but started my first postcard! I bought them for the first one, but my head was never in the right place for colouring and I couldn’t slow down enough. I thought I would try again today and really enjoyed it, especially the stippling part. It took some doing, as I was singing ‘hello mudder’ and laughing like a drain.
What a fantastic way to spend an hour on a Monday morning. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for what you are doing. Hugs. Annette. X

  4. Barb these are gorgeous – I don’t want to be awkward, but is it an old penny or a new (decimal) one? I’m still in old money at this end.
    Love

  7. another great tutorial – your instructions are always so clear. I did get my Gelli plate out at the weekend, for the first time in about 3 years (!!), to follow your tutorial from last week. Might be brave enough have a go at this one next weekend…

  8. Love the craft….
    and know it’s a craft blog…BUT…
It’s lovely when we get to see the little
    Vikings sometimes….Please….🐹🐹

  9. Another great step by step, I have the little boy stamp but feel sure I haven’t got dream & the branch that goes with him now so I am off to look at the offers as the Hung the Moon set has been on my wish list for a while.
I for one can’t believe how much we have learnt over the last 12 months from the Clarity Team – a positive to come out of a negative – SHAC & stay safe – there is light at the end of the tunnel.

  10. Hello Barb, what a fabulous step by step, I always know it will be good when you use your favourite stamps. Love the colours, and the simple but powerful message of the stamp. Off to go check out the blog tutorial offer. Take care and stay safe everyone. Bx
