When Parchment met a Fresh Cut Die…

When Parchment met a Fresh Cut Die…

Hi there.

Happy Sunday to you!

Thought I’d try something out which has been bouncing around in my head all week….a parchment overlay using one of our new Fresh Cut dies.

Let’s see what I came up with, shall we?

I’m going with the Queen Anne’s Lace die. Love this one, don’t we Mel ?!? I want. to see if I can cut a delicate die out of parchment. And I may as well add the outer cutting edge with the nested square die we have too.

I have gone for one of the Shenandoah Parchment sheets. This is the pad which has lots of almost landscape like designs, but what that means is there is a lighter area in the centre and it is darker around the outside. Great for parchment actually, because the whitework around the outside will stand out beautifully, if you fancy doing some.

Right. It’s gone through the mangle. I use a Gemini. It’s brilliant. We sell them. I laid the dies down on the front of the parchment, the less vibrant side. Not that NONE of the parchment pieces are stuck in the die.

Parchment is more delicate than card, so I have not used a brush to get rid of the bits. I have simply poked the bits out gently with a Pergamano No. 1 tool. Does the job perfectly.

Hold the artwork up to the light to check. You will soon see the stubborn ones… See them?

Time to cross over into the world of Grooviness…

Let’s add a frame with our Groovi Nested Square from the Starter Kit.

Add a little interest with the Diagonal grid. Work from behind and just randomly add diamond shapes to the bases of the flowers. Then do the swivel trick down the stems, by using the No. 2 tool and the diagonal grid. I ought to do a little YouTube on the swivel trick. It’s very easy once you see it done.

I found I needed a Lightwave, a light-table underneath the grid for this job, because of the Designer parchment.  Worth every penny.

Using the No. 2 tool, gently emboss the tips of the seed heads from behind. The Pink Pergamano Mat underneath is ideal.

I also did a simple double-row of dots on all four sides too, within my little frame. If I had more time, I would attempt a more elaborate grid pattern. But this will do today xx

Back to the mangle, and cut out the same die in the centre of one of our 7×7″ card blanks. Am I glad we stock the card blanks now! What a bonus to have such a lovely selection of black and white! And I’m glad we decided to separate the envelope. I always end up with so many envelopes!

This was how I attached the parchment. Run a glue runner around the outside of the cutout on the white card, as close to the aperture cutout as possible. Then dot dot dot a little Perga Glue in the bases of the flowers in the centre.

Slide a sheet of dark matching parchment in the card, and position the parchment to the left or right a tad – to create a drop shadow. Press down to secure.

The thing about these Square nested dies is you can cut out the parchment for the inside too.

EFFORTLESS! Attach to the inside of the white card. Done.

I’m enjoying the dies immensely. And I like the way the parchment behaves with them too.

I love the art of paper-cutting, and I love being able to see through artwork like this.

It looks so 3 dimensional!

Anyway. That’ll do for today. Time to have a late lunch, go for a walk with Dave – and finish that book! What a stinking good listen!!!

Love & Hugs,

Barb

  1. That is SO very beautiful Barbara! A perfect combination of die cutting & parchment. I will have to give this a try.
Enjoy your walk with Dave. Love and hugs to you both, Gilly xxx

    1. Hi bloggy friends – nice sunny day here, but with a very cold breeze. Another day of resting and drinking lots of hot drinks! Nurse’s orders (my daughter)!
I have got a Wedding card and a Golden Wedding Anniversary card to make for these events in July. It looks like Barb has sorted out the designs for me. So, Alison, you know what this means – I shall have to buy a new die cutting machine! Oops – not quite sure just how I will explain that one to Neill! Love and hugs to you all, Gilly xxx

      1. Hi Gilly,
Just say I recommended it as a necessity!! I’m sure Neill will understand! If you want to do up to 6×6 a Junior will work ,any bigger you will need the big one. I have both and they are equally as good – I do a lot of 7×7 and 8×8 , but at the moment I have just been using my Junior, not as heavy! Hope you’ve been following your daughter’s instructions and that you are feeling better today. Sending love and hugs to both of you,Alison xxxx

        1. Thanks Alison. Feeling a bit better tan yesterday thanks. Have you used the Junior to cut out an aperture in the actual card. Having seen this card from Barbara, I would like to be able to do this in a 6 x 6 card. xxx

          1. Hi Gilly,
Yes I have and it was fine. It has the same pressure as the big one I think, just the slot is smaller. Love and hugs Alison xxx

          2. Ah good – thanks for that Alison. Might go for one of those then, as the lighter weight would be better for me.
Not sure why my reply has to be above your last reply?!
Strange, not to worry. Love and hugs, Gilly xxx

          3. Haha! What do I know? It came out in the right place – maybe time for bed!! xxx

  2. Love this Barbara and love mixing my dies with parchment. Have not got any Fresh Cut ones yet, but they are on my agenda! Have a good Sunday x

  3. This is beautiful.haven’t tried my new dies get but have been playing with alcohol inks and gel.plate and stencils. Getting there though my first attempt was rubbish. I appear to be covering everything in alcohol ink! To misquote a scene from jaws ‘ We are gonna need a bigger blending solution!’

  4. WOW BARBARA YOU’VE CERTAINLY GIVEN ME SOME FOOD FOR THOUGHT HERE.. AS I HAVE SIGHT ISSUES.. THIS WOULD BE ANOTHER GREAT WAY TO MAKE A CARD .. THANK YOU ❤X

  5. What a beautiful bit of artwork you have given us to enjoy today Barbara I love it
Enjoy your lunch and your walk with your soon to be husband. When is the wedding again ?
Enjoy the rest of Sunday. Hugs Theresa x

  6. Hi Barbara,
I just love the way we can use all our stamping, Groovi and stunning dies to make such beautiful cards.
Thanks for inspiration and enjoy your Sunday xx

  7. Your card looks fantastic. I have the machine, the die, parchment & card just need to find the energy to go upstairs & play !!

  8. That looks amazing I so wish had the dies but on list next will have to be patient and enjoy all your all doing for know xxxx

  9. The dies are great with the parchment and love the added embossing you have done and the colours are gorgeous Barbara. I hope you had a good walk in the sunshine, well the sun is shining here so hope it has been shining for you too. x

  10. That’s beautiful Barbara, I love mixing diecuts and parchment (groovi) work. I love those designs too – once I get my dies delivered I’ll have a go at that card.
    Thank you x

  11. Been doing the very same thing for a while now, parchment lends itself very well to die cutting as long as the die is not too intricate, then you just end up with lots of little bits. Its a great way to combine Groovi with die cutting. Hope more dies will soon be coming our way, Barbara. Lots of love, Donna

    1. Hi Donna , lovely to read your post , it seems like this is going to be a good ides.
      Thanks Donna xx
      Lynn

  12. Hi Barbara, well now look what you have done !!!! i said if you had brought out these dies before Groovi i would have gone that way. But after looking at what you have achieved today it is brilliant never thought you would be able to cut parchment on a die cutting machine as i thought it would have been to fine and rip.
Question ? as you stock the crafters companion die cutting machine , would i be able to use the smaller Gemini die cutting machine with your dies ??? If you can then that would be fantastic.
I am thinking of such a lot of ideas i could do.
Only Clarity could come up with these ideas and inspiration .
    Thanks Barbara xx
    Lynn

    1. Hi Lynn,
Yes you can use the Gemini Junior but only up to 6 inches wide. I have been using my Junior to make 6×6 cards and it’s worked brilliantly. Hope this helps, Alison xx

      1. Hi Alison,
Many thanks for your reply Alison , good to know it would work on parchment I suppose I would just have to pick out things with a smaller size.
Looks like I have to save for the junior but me thinks it would be worth it.
        Thanks again
        Lynn xx

  13. absolutely stunning. I love the new dies but having problems. I keep getting an imprint from the metal plate on the inside of my cards! Will it damage the frosted plate if I place the card and then the die on this plate?

    1. Maybe too much pressure. If you’re using a Gemini, try this sandwich to start: clear cutting plate, the card, the die with cutting side facing down, frosted plastic shim, and clear cutting plate. If that doesn’t cut, add the magnetic shim, either above or below the frosted plastic shim. I create my sandwich so that the die is facing down onto the card. That way I can see where the die is going to cut. I see Sarah, who developed this machine, doing it that way these days. Don’t always need to use the metal shim which is mostly for very intricate dies that won’t cut without it. Your clear “cutting” plates are going to get marked up and warped. It helps to turn them over from one side to the other and from top to bottom as you work. The frosted plastic shim should not suffer the same fate–it is always on the noncut side of the die so that you are not cutting into it. Hope this helps.

  14. Oh my, this is stunning. The dies are definitely on my wish list. I have spent hours this weekend working through designs in the new ii books from Tina and they are lovely.
I didn’t comment yesterday, as I had too much going on, but I loved the clip of Grace doing the voice over. I remember her doing a show on Create and craft, years ago now, and thought then what a beautiful tone she had to her voice. Well, she has definitely chosen the right career and I wish her all the best for a very bright future after the great job she is doing with the royal wedding. Have a good evening. Annette X

  15. Hi Barb,
Oh this is fabulous! Absolutely love it. It is something I will definitely be trying very soon. Made another 6 cards today with the dies but in Pastel shades on a white card with the petite card as a background. They have come out really lovely. Now have a good supply of spare cards anyway. Thank you for bringing out these dies and also for showing us this step by step. Enjoy your walk and the rest of the book, love and hugs,Alison xxx

    1. Hi bloggy friends,
Hope you’ve all had a good day. It’s been quite chilly here todayut it is absolutely beautiful now. Been playing with my new dies today again as you can see from my post above. Really pleased with them.
Sending love and hugs to you all, Alison xxxx

  16. Love this idea. Beautiful card. I only got my dies yesterday so not achieved much yet as I have been at Maria’s workshop today. Fabulous day as usual. Hope you got your walk , been a lovely day here. xx

  17. What a beautiful card, Barbara. I love the new dies but haven’t treated myself yet, apart from the plain square ones. Have ordered the Queen Anne’s lace stamp as well
and can’t wait for them to arrive so I can have a play! Hope you had a lovely walk.
    xx

  18. Lovely work Barbara. My dies have not arrived yet so I will have to be patient. It turned out to be a lovely sunny day today so I managed to get out into the garden and also cleaned out the workshop. Great evening for a walk but I ran out of energy. xx

  19. Hello Barb, your R&D forays always produce beautiful artwork, love the paper cut effect on this card. Hope you had a good walk with Dave. Take care all. Bx

  20. Hi Barbara
Isn’t this beautiful, I think this die is my favourite out of all of them. They look like they cut so well and look great on the coloured parchment too. I like the extension ofadding groovi into the flowers and as a boarder, just shows you can keep it as a simple cut out or extended crafting. Hope you enjoyed your walk with Dave.
    Love Diane xxx

  21. Absolutely gorgeous card, Barbara. Will have to give it a go when I have the dies. Love all the designer parchments and they would look great with the seed pods too.xx
