A Canvas Project Vs Ironing….

A Canvas Project Vs Ironing….

Hi there.
Thanks for joining me.

Great sense of achievement here today.
Invited to the Palace? Nope
Best Blog Award? Nope

But I did clear not 1, not 2 but 3 baskets full of ironing!
24 shirts.
I’ll write that again slowly… twenty-four shirts.
AND 3 lots of kingsize bedding from Christmas!
Scheisenhausen!!! That’s a lottashirtsnsheets!
At one point, during a little coffee break, I was on the internet looking up Pfaff mangles, and we (Dave joined in the mangle search too!) even found my buddy Hayley West demonstrating it on You Tube!
But £1,300 buys you a lot of shirtsnsheets! So I decided to suck it up and keep going with the expensive steam iron in the cupboard.

No. I didn’t climb in the cupboard to do the ironing….

Anyway. Back to art. Yesterday, I had a blast with one of our Mel’s new stencils. So today, let’s look at the canvas together.

I’m sure there are lots of ways to arrive at this destination, but this is my approach. A5 Canvas board first. Walk a brayer with some Cheesecake or cream coloured Fresco paint across the canvas board,

then add South Pacific, or teal acrylic paint over the top.
When I say WALK the brayer, I mean roll it lightly over the canvas board without applying much pressure. This will give you a real distressed arty effect. See?

Let the paint dry. You can help it along with a heatgun, too.

Place the stencil over the canvas board, and drag texture paste through it with a spatula. I used the Viva Decor relief paste we sell. It takes a little longer to dry that others, but again, you can speed the drying process up too.

The relief paste is excellent, actually.

While we’re waiting for said paste to set, let’s look at the stencil detail…
Once it has set, we can add paint. This time, I went with brushes and two Golden Open paints: Quinacridone Azo Gold and Quinacridone Blue.
This combination yields the most superb colours. Look.
Greens and yellows and teals and oranges etc .

If you overlay the clean stencil, you can wipe away the Open paint with a damp paper towel.
You can use a scalpel to etch highlights in too.
Mount the A5 canvas on an A4 canvas board using double-sided tape, sign it – own it –  and bingo.

Hope you like it.
I think I want this stencil even larger;
watch this space…

And thus endeth the Woodland Animal Stencil Session.
Available for sale when I’m on telly next, which is Sunday, February 4th, 2-4pm.

Love & Hugs,
Barb

  1. Lovely! I was playing with my stencils and gruge paste last night and had so much fun. Tonight once I drop the kids, who eventually managed to get back from Aviemore, at the station to go back to Edinburgh, I will get the paints out and have lots of fun.
It has been very snowy Jere all day, and it was challenging driving home from church.

  2. Love the stencil and agree a bigger version would be great for larger canvas ! My colors too. Well done with the ironing. I’ve been grooving on and off today, snow to start and then rain, rain, rain …… Snooker kept hubby occupied ! X

  3. That's a fabulous stencil! And makes an excellent canvas!
I had a lovely day at Marias workshop getting all inky and creative….Can't beat it!
    Have a great evening
    Love and hugs! Xxx

  4. Hi Barb,
I love this! Brilliant colours you've used as well. Thank you for the step by step instructions. Well done for getting all of that ironing done – I've got mine to look forward to (not!) .
Had a good time at Linda's Groovi session but we had to cut it short because of the snow and we were worried in case Linda couldn't make it back home safely.
Sending love and hugs, Alison xx

    1. Hi bloggy friends,
Hope you are all safe and well. Very snowy here today and as you see from my comment above had to cut short our Groovi session. Good job we did because although I only live 20 mins away from CC , by the time we got home, the snow was drifting across the road, so I was pleased to get home. Lovely to see Su again and thanks to Lind. Love and hugs to all, Alison xxxx

  5. Great step by step loving the colours and stencil love doing canvases so know need the stencil to have a go but for know may have a play tomorrow with another stencil plus canvas xxx

  6. Hi Barbara
Love the detail in this stencil, it looks amazing with the texture paste and paint, well done getting all the ironing done, that must have been quite a pile. I'm going to tackle mine tomorrow morning, I don't think Julian owns 24 shirts so I don't think it will be that bad! Now I wonder what the exchange rate would be, ironing for Clarity goodies haha. Hope you've had a lovely evening p.
    Love Diane xxx

  7. Remember those shirt days fondly, Not! As Mike only got home from The Hague every second weekend ie back on Friday night and off on Sunday afternoon, it was two weeks plus of work and casual shirts sometimes numbering as many as 34. I had to have the tv on and a cup of coffee to hand. The worst bit was buttoning them up and folding, ready to be packed in the suitcase. The stencil looks like a must-have! ;~}

  8. I love this canvas and the colours are glorious Barbara, so bright and zingy! Personally I do as little ironing as possible. I make sure I remove the shirts quickly when the washing machine stops and hang them on hangers to dry, and bedding I fold as smoothly as possible and put in the airing cupboard. I realise it is easier for me as I am about when the washing machine is on and if you have cotton bedding the creases do not easily fall out even with a bit of heat in the cupboard. I have become very lazy where housework is concerned as I want to spend a lot more time doing the things I enjoy..lol. x

  9. Hello Barb, thanks for the step by step it really looks lovely, this will definitely be a must have stencil. As for ironing, well I don't do it, Hubby actually does it for me, he says he enjoys it and finds it quite therapeutic, and he is better at it than I am. Take care all. Bx

  10. Yep…I love this stencil (it's the badger at the bottom that did it for me). Can we have part 2 with a hedgehog please – I'll be opening up the Cafe Herisson soon, when the weather improves.
In the meantime, why on earth are you ironing sheets? It'll be kecks next. Who sees them?
    Love
    Maggie (Yorkite)
PS – just done a MAJOR reorganisation of my craft shack, even the window cleaner noticed when he was doing the window!

  11. Well… I commented on this but it's disappeared?! Never mind, like the artwork, didn't envy you with the ironing etc.

Great, albeit short, time with Linda (can't control the weather tho' can we and everyone's safety was paramount) and good to see Alison (alimecca) too; just got the projects to finish off and will then post on Groovi WW FB! xx
