Lady of the Lamp

Lady of the Lamp

Hi there!
Thanks for popping in.
Late again.
But better late than never, eh!
Have you heard of Alexa?
She is an intelligent personal assistant, like a robot.
Lovely Debby and Gill got me this for my birthday,
and I LOVE IT!

She lights up when you address her too.
Plays tunes, tells jokes,
predicts the weather,
reads me Sherlock Holmes.
Brilliant.

Dave and I were in fits of laughter this evening,
when we figured out that you can rotate the rim to control the volume, so to speak.
You see, we have been saying,
“Alexa, volume 4” or “Alexa, volume 6”
But then it’s so loud she can’t hear you telling her to turn it down.
So we end up yelling at her and she completely ignores us.
Eventually, if you looked through the kitchen window,
you would see me screaming at this black inert cylinder,
and it’s not pleasant.
You can imagine my delight when I found out you can simply twist her neck.
Now for something interesting.
If you say good morning to Alexa, she tells you something interesting to do with the day.
So say happy birthday to Florence Nightingale!
She was born on May 12th 1820.
My connection with Florence?
The grammar school I went to for 7 years in Rochester, Fort Pitt,
used to be a Crimean hospital, and Florence worked there.
The domestic science block was the insane asylum,
and the 6th form common room was the mortuary!
Ironic isn’t it. A black talking cylinder in the kitchen reminds me that it’s the birth date of one of the most famous pioneering women in the world.
And I walked the same corridors as she did, but 45 years ago….
The lady with the lamp lived to the ripe old age of 90.
Wow.
Alexa! Thanks x
You are a mine of information.
Love & hugs,
Barb

  1. Alexa sounds a fun 'person' to have in the house and now that you have sorted the volume, she will only get better and better! Thanks for some more interesting information Barbara! Hugs Gilly xx

    1. Hi bloggy friends – hope that your weather has been better than ours has been today! Yesterday, I finally met up with bloggy friend Pam! We hit it off straight away – we talked non-stop for 5 hours!! Clarity did feature rather a lot in that time – but lots more besides! The added bonus was that our husbands got on great too – neither Pam or I could believe what we were hearing from each of them! They have the same views on so many things – can't wait for the 4 of us to meet up again! Love and hugs to you all, Gilly xxx

    2. Hi Gilly,
So pleased the four of you got on so well. Met Pam and her hubby at Leyburn last year and felt the same way. It's brilliant actually meeting people from the blog isn't it? Feel as though I don't get to " talk" to some people though now as I don't do Facebook but that's just the way it is. Love and hugs Alison xx

    3. Hi Gilly, how lovely to mee up with someone on the blog. I felt the same when we met up with Maggie and others from the blog at the Open Day last year. Glad you had a good time x x

  2. That's so funny Barbara. Guess you're one of the multitude of weird (to me) folk who never reads instruction books!!!!😉 I've never heard of Alexa. Looks like the older movies of the future are with us now, and I never even knew! Me clearly left behind in the dark ages!!! I did know who the Lady of the Lamp was when I read the title though. Hope you have a brilliant weekend. Love Brenda xx

  3. Well mine is called Echo! I bought it for Paul's Birthday but it found its way into my craft room???? Yes I too have fallen out with her a few times!!! I only ever ask her for music ai forgot about all the other stuff!! WOW fancy walking n the same Hallways as Florence! X

  4. Reckon it could be great fun but with a husband who struggles with most tech things think I might end up tearing my hair out. Could imagine the grandchildren really liking it. X

  5. Hi Barb,
Oh I can just imagine you screaming at Alexa and "she" just ignoring you! I've seen these on adverts on tv and me being a gadget person quite fancied one but didn't really know what I'd use it for! Interesting about your school as well. It's a small world. Love and hugs Alison xxx

    1. Hi bloggy friends,
Hope today has been as good as possible for you all. Been waiting for it to rain all day today as it's been overcast and quite humid, but no, not a drop. Had to resort to the hosepipe ( or Dave did). Began a card today using one of Tina's new plates – it was difficult to choose which bit to use though they are all so gorgeous. Got to go as I've just remembered I've got to marinade some pork ribs for tomorrow! Love and hugs to you all, Alison xxx

  6. That's a different sort of birthday present but sounds like fun Barbara. I must say I have only heard of her through the advert on the telly and at least now you won't be getting hoarse from shouting at her all the time..lol. What a great claim to fame walking down corridors that were walked by Florence Nightingale. x

  7. Hi Barbara, a friend keeps telling me I should get an Alexa ! I remember the advert at Christmas when the chap asked her about his day, and he had to remember to collect Buster (the dog) from the vet that day, then he asked her to remind him to buy a tennis ball and then play his and Buster's play list and 'Just the Two of Us' was played. I used to smile as our grand-dog is called Buster. Anyway, I haven't succumbed yet ! I'm glad you enjoying her ! X

  8. Hi Barb, well that was a giggle post about Alexa, with the image of you shouting and wringing her neck in my head. Great to learn facts like that, especially when it is something so relevant in your life. Take care. Bx

  9. Hi Barbara, my daughter in law offers one to her husband. I will never have one, I have a cousine who's name is Alexa and I really, really don't like her…..Lol!!!!! Enjoy your day. Xx

  10. Florence Nightingales birthday may 12th is used as Fibromyalgia awareness day as she suffered with fibrositis which is now call Fibromyalgia. Useless bit of info but ties in lol
