Hands up all you Lefties!!!

Hands up all you Lefties!!!

Hi there.
Thanks for popping in.
Friday’s blog a private peek,
so let’s see…..

I’m left-handed.
And you?

My Mum, Dad and brother are right-handed,
although my Mum was certainly born left-handed,
but they forced her to use her right hand at school.
This was not uncommon back in the day.
In fact, they tied her left hand behind her back,
which is rather extreme, don’t you agree?
Try that in the local secondary modern!!
Interestingly though, she has beautiful handwriting nonetheless,
and does everything else with her left hand!

Must tell you a story about my Mum when she was younger…
Dad had taken her to a posh dinner and dance in London.
Partway through dinner, the chap sitting next to her whispered in her ear,  “keep to your left, Madame”.
Mum was rather perplexed, smiled and carried on eating.
“Keep to your left, Madame,” he repeated.

Three times he made the same request,
and finally Mum turned to him.
(You have to say this out loud in a strong German accent)
“How do you know I am learning to drive?” she asked.

“You are eating my bread roll, Madame” he responded.

For about 15 years I used to cut all the stamps out by hand.
That was what I did every single evening.
I would sit in fron of the TV with a tray on my lap
and cut out stamps.
Boy was I fast! My hands were pretty deformed because I was using right hand scissors, and the moulded handles were digging into me. Somebody kindly bought me a left-handed pair of scissors thinking it would help me.
But my oh my!! All you lefties out there! It was hopeless!
Same with a potato peeler.
Same with golf clubs.
Same with a guitar.

Even though I am a seriously left-handed person,
I use right-handed tools and equipment.

Anyway, it’s not Left Handers Day,
(That’s in August. Wonder why….)
but here’s a neat little You Tube with some gems.

Enjoy!

And I will leave you with this little nugget…
A husband asks his wife, “Honey, if I died, would you remarry?”

“After a considerable period of grieving, I guess I would. We all need companionship.”

“If I died and you remarried,” the husband asks, “would he live in this house?”

“We’ve spent a lot of money getting this house just the way we want it. I’m not going to get rid of my house. I guess he would.”

“If I died and you remarried, and he lived in this house,” the husband asks, “would he sleep in our bed?”

“Well, the bed is brand new, and it cost us $2000. It’s going to last a long time, so I guess he would.”

“If I died and you remarried, and he lived in this house and slept in our bed, would he use my golf clubs?”

“Oh, no!” the wife replies. “He’s left-handed!”

Love & Hugs,
Barb

  1. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
That's brilliant. Awful what they used to get away with under the disguise of education wasn't it?? Your poor mum. Xxx

  2. Haha very good love the baby picture with surprised face well I'm legged handed my middle brother was left handed my Rebecca is left handed I got her some left handed dress making scissors she said she could use them and I thought was helping but like you said you spend you life using left handed tools. So very intresting well have a good evening love Joy and Katie xx

  3. Hi Barbara, you're so funny.
That poor man, your mum eating his roll.
Me, well, I'm pretty much ambidextrous. What does that make me?! Apart from weird, awkward…. I do write with my right hand, but I guess I wasn't given the choice either. I can write with my left hand too when needed, but rarely do, and would need to practise. I'm better kicking and throwing a ball with my left hand. Most things it's whatever hand I feel like using at the time!!! Means I can often get double out of my CFS arms by swapping 😊 I can read things that are upside down too, don't know why, just can.

Hope you have a good weekend
    Love Brenda xx

Good to see you back Morag. Sorry to hear you've been stuck in bed. I missed you too xx

  4. My daughter is left handed.many years ago She asked me to teach her how to knit.well problem me right handed. Sam left so I sat her facing me with wool and pins ready.copy what I do I say. Well that didn't go to plan and to this day we laugh about her attempt at knitting. She still can't master the art of wool and pins. She has mastered card making so I managed something.

    1. Oh Lynda I spent a whole day last summer teaching girl guides to knit. I'm right handed but ended up teaching all the left handed girls as I had the most patience! I succeeded with most of them. Xx

  5. LOL ! A cheerful end to the week, thank you. Hubby's a lefty except for playing golf and holding a racquet of any kind. He throws a dart left handed though. Still laughing at your mum and the bread roll ! Have a good weekend x x

  6. Hi Barbara, yes I am left handed too, both my parents and sisters are right handed. I too use right handed equipment, took a lot of practice but I don't think I could use left handed scissors now after cutting with scissor for over 20 years. When we lived abroad, my Dad was in the Marines, one of the teachers tied my hand behind my back and tried to make me write with my right hand. Oh my, my dad was furious and wiped the floor with the teacher, she never did that to me again. Thanks for sharing your story, loved the video! Enjoy your evening.
    Hugs to you and Dave

  7. My Num had her hand tied behind her back too 😱 The best present I've had as a leftie is a left handed pencil sharpener – brilliant, has made such a difference.

  8. Liked the little video. Must have been really horrible for children who were left handed and that is not too long ago either. I'm surprised that it is only 10% of us that are left handed. I throw a ball left handed and play tennis left handed but I am right handed. Love the golf club joke.

  9. Ha. Ha. Ha brilliant joke Barbara.
Thank you for the reminder…..I have a new lady in my class in Tarbolton who is left handed. She is a newbie to parchment work and the groovi system, so last Saturday, I was teaching colour blending with pencils and piercing and snipping……I gave my lady a scrap to practice on after showing her what to do…(I learnt to cut both ways for classes)…I went off to help another lady and about 20 mins later I got back to my new lady…..only to find that she had coloured the most lovely butterfly and her Picot cutting was superb! I must post a photo of her work, a natural at this parchment lark!
    Hugs xx

  10. I write with my left hand, but I do use my right hand for somethings – I hold scissors with my right hand, but I guide whatever I am cutting with my left . I haven't quite sorted out which hand to do what with as far as cutting parchment though!
I know people who were naturally left handed who were forced to write right handed. When I was at school a third of the class were lefties – must be something in the water!

  11. Hi Barbara our daughter is left handed and so are three of her cousins. It comes from their Granddad who is left handed and is now 92. He has never mentioned any of the troubles your mum had. Our daughter is wonderfully creative so maybe that is a thing for left handers. I will try to share the film with her she will love it. Take care. Hugs Jackie

  12. Great entertaining blog for a Friday, Barbara. Years ago when I bought a cheap clear stamp I remember how difficult it was too cut to separate the images. The thought of sitting there night after night making my hands sore doesn't bear thinking about. One determined lady! Loved the anecdote about your mum. Did your dad ever take her 'posh' again? Have a good weekend, you and Dave and all the Clarity Team.xx

  13. I'm right handed but do use my left for things apart from cutting and writing. I have heard thateople had their hands tied behind them to get them using their right hand. Wouldn't happen in schools now! Great joke. Enjoy your weekend. Xx

  14. So glad to see you post on her Morag. Was getting worried. My postings have been a bit erratic over the last couple of weeks as I have been very sleepy whilst they sort out my drugs and care. Now permanently signed over to my local hospice so things should settle down now. I am goung to buy tickets for the Open Days and intend to be at Ally Pally. Will also be going to Farnborough. How positive am I!!xx

    1. You keep being positive Susan, miracles do happen you know. I hope they get your medication sorted out soon so you can have proper quality time as much as you are able. I'm sending psychic positive thoughts that you'll get to the open days and Ally Pally, and lots more after. Think about you often xx

    2. Hello Susan, you are in my thoughts and prayers daily. Your positivity is wonderful to hear. When you say you are getting all of the open day tickets…Does that mean Leyburn too? Love and hugs xxx

    3. Hi Susan good for you, follow your dreams as I'm sure the open days will be a huge highlight of your year. I hope they get your medication sorted soon. I'm hoping to go to farnborough too, don't know if it will be the Friday or Saturday, I will know nearer the time but it would be lovely to meet you. Xxx

    4. Just the ones at Crowborough Morag. I was hoping to tie in a break in Ripon and take a day out to go to Leyburn as we love the area and used to visit a lot. If I feel good I'll see what I can organise.

    5. Hi Susan, hope if I get to Ally Pally that I'll get to meet you as well. You just keep on planning the next thing you'd like to do. Your positive attitude is great and I'm sure is a winner, I have so much admiration for you. Have a good weekend.xx

  15. I am left handed too, and it is always something that I look at when I see people writing or doing something creative….I don't know why…but I love it when I meet a fellow lefty. Apparently it is supposed to signify creativity…. and you would be surprised how many crafty people are actually left handed!

  16. That is hilarious, the little story at the end I mean ,not your poor mum having her hand tied behind her back. We are all right handed but for some strange reason my grandaughter uses her knife and fork the left way. No reason to stop her if she is comfortable using them that way. Must be a lot more difficult for lefties but at least these days they are not treated in a cruel way. xx

  17. I'm left handed too. Apparently left handed people are creative and intelligent. Not sure I meet that profile such is life x I remember I was one of my teachers telling me about left handed ink pens but when I told my mum she didn't believe such a thing existed. Mind you I was 5 years old before she realised I was left handed. Bless her x

  18. Fabulous blog today!
My daughter is left handed and is brilliant at multitasking! I haven't been able to persuade her to do crafting but she cooks well and is quite musical! She never uses left handed equipment.
    Have a lovely weekend
    Love and hugs xxxx

  19. Yes I am left-handed too! So was my older sister but she taught herself to be ambidextrous. My Mum is German and was also left-handed initially, but like you, had her hand tied behind her back to force her to write eith her right hand. Like you, I can't use left-handed tools, and have just always managed with right-handed scissors etc, I am sure it is because we didn't have left-handed scissors for so many years. It so nice to watch you crafting, ie brushing inks with stencil brushes or snipping parchment, as I can just copy you rather than having to figure out how to do it left-handed. It was always a struggle trying to learn to knit or crochet, watching my Mum. Thanks for a lovely blog today xxx

  20. Hello lovely blog friends.I've missed you all. Sod's Law… I left you all little messages earlier..only to then realise it was yesterday's blog.I hope you are all as well as can be. Love and Hugs xxx

    1. Hi Morag & ladies, missed you Morag hope you are all keeping well.
Has been very cold but quite a few small flourishs of snow here yesterday but same today Saturday.
Keep warm anduring look after yourselves.
      Hugs to all.
      Lynn xx⛄

  21. My Mum did somethings left handed but wrote with her write and was probably made to do it though don't remember her saying. I am right handed but think if I had to I could probably manage most things with my left. I did laugh about your Mum and the bread roll and the story cracked me up. x

  22. I am a leftie Barb but because everyone in the family was right handed I only write with my left hand, everything else i do righthanded because that's how I was taught. I have tried to cut left handed but I just can't do it.

  23. Hi Barb,
I'm right handed but when I was teaching PE I taught myself to throw a netball, javelin, shot, discus, use a left handed hockey stick and do cartwheels left handed so I could demonstrate to the kids. Then when I changed to become SENCO I taught myself cursive handwriting left handed too. Never mastered left handed scissors though! Love the joke by the way! Love and hugs Alison xxx

    1. Hi bloggy friends,
Hope today has been as good as possible for you. Hope weather has been kind to you as well, – been lots of snow flurries here today – pleased I was in the house. Chris hope everything went as well as it could. Morag lovely to have you back. Love and hugs to all, Alison xx

    2. Hi Alison. Yes thanks all went as well as possible. Didn't realise dad meant so much to some people so many years ago. He would have been very moved. Having a week with the big and small family members now xx

  24. I'm the same as your mum. Was told to pick up my pencil whilst the teacher hovered above with a ruler which she happily applied to my knuckles if I reached for it with the 'wrong' hand. Still write right handed. I'm typing this with my left 😅😅😅

  25. Hello Barbara

My father taught himself to be ambi-dextrous (he was an engineer and sometimes it was easier to use tools to mend machines with his left hand), my husband and I are right-handed, my two sons are right-handed but both use a knife and fork as if they are left-handed and have done so from the first time they used these implements. My eldest grandson is purely left-handed. What a mixture! Lol.

    Love
    Roz.x

  26. Hi Barbara wasn't it now all worth it the hard slog the need to keep going left handed or not you were destined to be as good as you are not just for yourself or for the kids that were your priority back then.
But because your good at what you do your products are in my opinion far superior
to anything out there and I wish you all the best in the future.
I've never in my life been an A licker so take it from me you go girl I follow you because I I want to…Love Dot..xx

  27. Hi Barbara
I do enjoy your Friday blogs. Your poor mum being forced to use her right hand in such a brutal way, that's dreadful. I did chuckle at the posh meal though, mortifying. My male cousins are left handed and we've had many a discussion about it over the years. The tongs by the loose bread rolls in the supermarket used to wind them up when they were attached by the cord only long enough for right handed people. I love the funny at the end, will be chuckling over that one for the next few hours. Hope you have a lovely relaxing weekend.
    Love Diane xxx

    1. Hello lovely blog friends hope you are all ok and staying warm and safe with the snowy weather. Don't know if the snow will come this far south but it's quite chilly today. sending hugs xxx

  28. My mother in law was also one of those children who had their left had tied behind their back. My daughter is a leftie and the only thing she does with her right hand is use scissors. Thankfully, although I'm right handed, I can kind of use my left hand and have managed to teach her to knit and crochet.

  29. My brother is a leftie, but he does a lot of things right handed. I'm a rightie, but I can do some DIY left handed, maybe because of watching and learning from my big brother! Love the bread roll story – thanks for the private peek x

  30. Even when I "officially" write with my right hand, I am able to do so with my left hand. Every other thing I do left handed and only use my right hand when I can't get the screw in or I would brake my hand, things like that. But definitely I can't pour a coffee with my right hand or it will end in a big mess LOL

But with tools… I think we lefties are used to use right handed tools as even a knife is "the other way round". In our generation there weren't any left handed tools. As I started school in 1962 children were not forced anymore to use only their right hands like your mom. We had a boy in class who was seated on the left site of the bench so both writing hands didn't collide.

Luckily paint brushes and stuff like that can be used both ways, right and left.

  31. I'm left handed and they did try to force me to write right handed. I was sent to the head masters office. It was the only thing my mum ever went to the school about and she always called me cack handed! Does any body else have a problem with packaging? I seem to try to open every thing at the wrong end!

  32. Interesting blog today. Apart from my Mum's brother all the family were right handed. My uncle used to tell me though that the teachers used to hit his knuckles with a ruler if he used his left hand. Cruel wasn't it? Had to laugh about your poor Mum eating the mans roll. Have a good weekend both you and Dave.xx

  33. Hi Barbara
This made me giggle – being a fellow left hander!
I too have knarled fingers from using right handed scissors. My Mum who is no longer with us bought me a pair of leftie dressmaking scissors which worked wonderfully until they became blunt – they never worked the same after they were sharpened, I really feel who ever sharpened them must have been a right hander! I now just muddle along with right handed ones but feel I may try some more leftie ones in the future.
So glad we don`t get treated the same way your mum did years ago, I can see the Headlines now! If you delve back even further into history I think you`ll find we were treated as witches!
I too tried the guitar but gave up – left that to my husband and brother both right handers and very good, but you've now got me thinking because my other brother who is left handed also struggled and gave up but my very determined daughter ( a leftie) is taking it up again …
I could go on and on about this as two of my grandchildren are lefties also!
