Open Paint on a Gelli Plate.

Open Paint on a Gelli Plate.

Hi there!
Happy Saturday!
Having a great morning thus far,
doing a bit of art and hanging out with Preppy Paul.
Dad just rang.
He’s been tracking all the guesses yesterday.
“Your money’s safe Barb,” he said, “nobody guessed Amy.”
Yep, he was listening to Amy Winehouse, Back to Black.
Now tell me my Dad isn’t the coolest Dad in the world!
I’m meeting my dear friend Debby for lunch in Tunbridge Wells,
so I am writing very fast; the clock is ticking!
But since Saturday’s blog is a New Technique,
I thought I’d try something with the Gelli Plate this morning.
Very interesting….try it – you will be impressed !
Brayer a little Blue Golden Paint onto a craft mat and gently
brayer it down the 8 x10 Gelli Plate or Gell Press
or whatever you want to call it.
Scrunch up a piece of copy paper and dab it over the paint,
to create texture.

Place a large moon mask ON THE CARD
then lower the plate which is on the 9 x 11 MegaMount
down onto the card.
MegaMount is a key player here….

Flip over, burnish, pull print. Bingo

Spread the paint left on the Gelli out with the brayer
and repeat the process;
this will just tone down the whiteness of the moon.

Nice

Mmmm.
So here’s some wet, slow-drying Golden paint,
sitting on the craft mat.
I bet you could paint with it.
Let’s use the Butterfly Tree Stamp Set.

Works brilliantly.
Actually, I rolled the painty brayer up and down the stamp
to spread it evenly before planting the tree.
Then you get a really perfect impression.

Couple of butterflies and a message….
Let Heaven & Nature Sing.
It comes from another beautiful Stamp set.
Findings:
The Golden Open Paint when used sparingly,
is fantastic with stamps.
I’ll repeat that slowly, despite being in a hurry….
W H E N U S E D S P A R I N G L Y.
When you slide around in the paint with the stamp,
that’s a pretty clear indication that you may be using too much!

Idea moment….
So roll out the paint on the mat again.
I still haven’t add more.
Stamp the tree image into the paint.
Stamp it elsewhere to clean it off or make another masterpiece.
Add the butterflies.

Flip the Gelli Plate into the mat.

Flip over and rub the back.
We are trying to transfer the paint, to see whether it will work.
This is commonly known as R&D
Research & Development.
Or, in Grayspeak, giving it a go.

Love it. Great background.

So now we have not one but two pieces!

Anchor the tree with torn paper and a brush.

Add the sentiment in Black Archival.

Looks like rain splats.

Too big.
Needs trimming back.

Much better.
Paul’s using the Large Gelli Plate on the TV with inks tomorrow,
so be sure to check out what he comes up with.
He’s on HOCHANDA at
10am 2pm and 5pm.

So there we are.
Quick clean up of the stamps and brayer,
and off I trot to Tunbridge Wells to have lunch with my lovely friend.

I wonder if they serve celery and grapes…
Maybe I will just have to settle for cream tea for two.
Shared, of course!
Love & hugs,

  1. I guessed wrong but in do so it triggered a nice memory of my Dad so that is fine

I love your Gelli plate creations. I really must have a go at using mine one day soon

Hope you have a lovely weekend

  2. Guessed wrong too! Love this technique. Looking forward to the shows, may have to record as have Mum to lunch tomorrow, although I remember she watched a show before !

Sorting through my stuff I have found I have two of http://www.claritystamp.co.uk/Seen-on-TV/17733-/Bird-amp-Flower-Rows-+-MASKS—Unmounted-Clear-Stamp-Set-+-FREE-9-x-3-Mega-Mount

Barbara, can I take advantage of your blog and say I'd be glad to give one away including the masks but without the mega mount though! If anyone would like it leave their name as a reply to this and it will be first come first served.

I hope you don't mind Barbara and, if not, I know I have doubled up on one of the Groovi plates but need to check which first and will offer that at a later date if it's ok to do so via your blog. It's where the interested parties come!

Let me know if it's not and I wont do it again!

Have a lovely lunch, we've got people coming for dinner tonight so I'd better get my head in gear for that. I can hear hubby using the hoover downstairs so that's good, perhaps I'll spend a little more time looking around the Clarity site. I'm sure I saw a new website but it came up as the usual one this morning! I must investigate. xx

  3. Love this Gelli technique. Made the background for my Christmas cards this way – my square backgrounds from the first 'pull' then my sister's cards rectangular backgrounds from the second; most economical, nothing wasted!
    Enjoy your lunch in TW. ;~}

    1. Card sorted by the bank fraud squad and as for the car had a response to my letter informing me they weren't taking it any further. (I should hope not!) It does, however, make you very wary and suspicious!
      Hope you are faring well. S xx ;~}

    2. When I was in Kuwait last summer, I didn't have any alcohol inks so bought food colouring. The blue, red and green worked particularly well and I used them as mat for my mum's Xmas cards and also as a base for the ribbon 'Merry Christmas' and 'Thank You' pieces that decorated the bags for Mum's carers' gifts. S xx

  4. Need a geli plate day got to birthday cards to make Bob and Hannah are lovely daughter busy week two birthdays this week. Your dad is cool would guessed Amy winehouse have a great lunch out todayxxx

  5. I love this. I have stamped successfully using Adirondack acrylic paint dabbers. I think it gives a different look and feel to the image. I too found that less paint is better!
Enjoy your afternoon out with your friend. I am also going out for Afternoon Tea. There is going to be about 30 of us from Church going into the George hotel in Glasgow for a lovely afternoon. Looking forward to the Proseco too!

  7. Fabulous print, the results from the Gelli plate never cease to amaze me, definitely need a play session.Love the second print too, very atmospheric.
Enjoy your lovely lunch and treat yourself xx
P's. Your Dad is very cool

  8. I had a list as long as my arm as to what your dad could be listening to but Amy wasn't on it. Love the cards. I don't have any open paint but I wonder if watering down system 3 might work – something for me to try. I'm heading to the next town to Tesco later to get me some shaving foam. I don't have re-inkers but I do have alcohol inks, I wonder if they work with shaving foam – something else for my to try. Still haven't used my colorburst – something else for me to try. And back in the real world – I must go and make a pan of sweet potato and red pepper soup!

    1. Hi Julia, Alcohol inks work ok with the shaving foam but not so dramatic as a water based paint, I like to use silk paints, mainly because I have a ready supply and you can use on material as well. K

    2. Thanks ladies. I'll have a rummage and see what I can find in my cupboards and drawers – I`m a typical crafter so not short of supplies, eg. got the shaving foam this afternoon, it was cheap so I bought 5 cans.

  9. Lovely – I did a stamp-board experiment yesterday and ended up stamping with gesso! Not as neat as your results, but I was quite pleased with it as a first go. Of course I'm still trying to sort out my craft room, but I keep getting distracted!! Enjoy your lunch x

  10. Beautiful I love both these sets so versatile thank you for today's inspiration enjoy your lunch with your friend have a good catch up
Wouldn't have thought of Amy winehouse xxx

    2. Evening Sheila hope those antibiotics are working . Went to look at new cars today – think it might be toast for the month with no beans!!!! Xxxx

    3. Hi Sheila, no different but coping better with it, thanks. Hope you are feeling a lot better today. I love messing about with the shaving foam. Time I had, another go. Love, and hugs Pam xx

    4. Hi Pam, scrolled up from the bottom so asked you below how your back was! Sorry to hear its not better yet, how horrible to have it hurting for so long. Oooo you have been playing with shaving foam too, must be a CCA day for it! Xx

  11. Have a lovely lunch!
That's a great card…they both are and I don't know which I like the best! I am going to have to have a go!
Just off to pick my car up!
    Love and hugs! Xxx

  13. Hi Barbara,

how could we all forget good old Amy???

Beautiful cards you made with the Gelli plate…
Believe it or not it was the first time I used my Gelli plate for the calendar challenge this month… and the Adirondacks (I used only Distress and Archival before).

Sometimes you need a push to try something new…
    Rolf xxx

  14. Definitely a cool Dad! What a beautiful technique, I love the card you've made. Will definitely give it a go. I only have system 3 too. Just received a package of more groovi stuff today, so I can't wait to play!

  15. Hi Barbara
I think you do have a very cool Dad with very good taste. Amy was an amazing talent. My Wee Houses and Shops have arrived together with the storage system and my Pergamano scissors. I don't know what to do first-practice snipping, organise my stamps or play with my Gelliplate.
Enjoy lunch with your friend. I am just going to set my recorder for Paul's shows tomorrow.
    Hugs from Chris X

  16. Thank you for showing us this technique Barbara and will have to give this a go and will certainly be watchjng Paul tomorrow. I would never have guessed your Dad would like Amy Winehouse in a million years, a real cool gentleman! Have a lovely lunch. x

  17. Wow, wow and wow! These pieces are wonderful – love them both. Have a fab lunch and thanks for reminding us about Paul tomorrow. (I didn't even try to guess your dad's music choice yesterday, but if I had I'd never have got that).
    Tonbridge Sue

  18. Thanks for showing us this technique. I definately need to get my gelli plate out the box to try. I also received my order today of the new storage file with stamps so need to go and organise my stamps. Would never of guessed Amy Winehouse your Dad was listening to. I hope you have a lovely catch-up with your friend over lunch today.x

  19. Well Well I had him down as a jazz man. Love using the jelly plate except when I am trying to copy January Calendar to send in for the competition. 15 pieces of card later I give up. The annoying thing is I've done it once and gave it away as a card before I knew about the competition. Yes I know that sounds like a yeah yeah course you did but I did!. Got to the final bit today and then slipped with the flippin stamp Grrrrr. Move away from the table…..
Anyway not playing that game but might play this one it's lovely. Although imitation is the greatest form of flattery I think I might stick with the creative style, its toooooo difficult to copy exactly or maybe I am too pernickety

  20. This is fabulous . I must try out my gelli plate, it would help to remove it from the box and take a deep breath .whew! Hello every one have a joy filled day , make a decision ,—- if it didn't start out great you can still choose your thoughts and think about your blessings and say " this is a great day ". Joy now. Jan.😍😘

  21. A very cool Dad. I would never have guessed right no matter how long I had. That is a great card and I love the result of the R & D. Never mind grapes and celery. Enjoy the cream team. I have replaced two of my juices today with a beautiful Japanese meal cooked by my son-in-law. I will be interested to see if it makes any difference to my weight loss (currently 1lb per day). Have a great time with Debby. xxx Maggie

  22. Hi Barb,
Well your Dad certainly is cool -Amy Whinehouse eh, I'm impressed but would never have guessed that!
Your artwork today is lovely ( as ever), using one of my favourite stamps and one of my favourite sentiment stamps too. Must try to do something similar as I haven't got any open acrylics. Hope you enjoy your Lunch and time with your friend. Looking forward to Paul' shows tomorrow. Love Alison xxx

  23. Enjoy yourself and I hope your friend enjoys lunch too. You Papa is awesomely cool and much more! Love your prints and I now realise why buying the right paints is a necessity too. Off to check out yesterday's post and the paints too Karen x

  24. Afternoon All, What a lovely picture my favorite again Barb, Butterflies, and a beautiful colour too. Just love the Gelli plate, must try to do more, but its finding the time. Used some paper stash shaving foam papers this week.

Well I did not get around to mentioning who I thought your Dad was listening too but it was not Amy – Thought it may have been my mate Phil Collins. Long story but I use to know him……

Not much to report on Mum, she is still in hospital, had the results of the MRI scan and she has swelling on her spine now + mini stroke. Bit of a worry yesterday I have to say. Hope to have more news later today.

I have been feeling bereft of contact with her I have to say and fingers crossed she is getting her mobile phone back today – fully charged.

Well best get a cuppa just back from a walk round the block – 2 miles up and down steep hills.

    Crafty hugs Pen x

    1. Pen I hope you have better news today and get to speak to your mum too. I like Phil Collins too – and you used to know him, how lovely! Xxxx

  25. Both prints are beautiful very frosty looking. Had a lovely afternoon doing art jornalling and had a practice with shaving foam. Sorted out my sale stamps and wee houses and shops into my storage folders. Lovely afternoon! Hope Grace is OK with the snow storm in New York. Xx

    1. Hi Donna enjoy playing with your new stamps, all beautifully organised too! Oh yes Barbara, I hope Grace is ok too – what dreadful weather New York is having. Any blog members out there I hope you are ok xxxxx

    2. Hi Donna, quit a good day, how, about you. Food shopped today and had coffee out, had a go at making a birthday card but didn't like how it turned out so will try it again. Love and hugs Pam xx

  26. Hi Barbara, Very, very, clever technique, and the finished prints look fabulous !!
I hope you have had a good time with your friend, and perchance a 'cream tea'.
I am just watching some recordings of your shows off Hochanda and your tips and techniques are fab-u-lous.

  28. Yeh have the cream Tea there are a few outfits I am waiting for!!!! Funny but I started to read faster when you said you were typing fast. Xx I like you project I woke really well. I haven't played with my Opens for a while. XSam

  29. I like how you are introducing the GEL PRESS over the other company, Barbara. There is plenty of room for the original gel press to enter the scene and your influence will certainly help them. So glad you met and worked with them at CHA. I continue to spread the word over here in the US about you, Claritystamps and Gel Press.
Your sparing use of paint is key. All the other tutorials out there show such sloppy, messy work. You are the best! Thank you. Cynthia

  30. Fab techniques, love be the results. I am looking forward to Paul's shows tomorrow. I hope you had a lovely time with Debby. you have a very cool Dad, Amy is fab, I didn't think of her! xxx

  31. Hi Barbara
Yes you have one cool dad! Well I thought it would be a female artist just hadn't remembered Amy! Love today's artwork, must play with my geli plate again. Sounds like your mouth is more comfortable today so hope you enjoyed your afternoon tea.
    Love Diane xxxx

    1. Hi Diane, I'm ok, how are you? Hope you've had a good day.
Hi Brenda, hope you and Daisy are ok, be lovely to see you back when you feel up to it.
Hi Dot, hope you are ok, haven't seen you today, love, and hugs to you all.xx

  32. Didn't even think of Amy and yet I have the Back to Black CD and love it. Your Dad is definitely a cool dude. Hope you enjoyed your lunch with Debby. Love your project today, haven't got the open acrylics though. Haven't used my System 3 ones yet after buying lots of them quite a while ago. Would it be a cheek to ask you if you would do a step by step with them sometime as a reminder. Love Pam xx

  33. Back to Black – who'd have thought it! Great track. Hope you had a good afternoon, Barbara. I'm always amazed how effective screwed up paper can be. Mxx
