And Still I rise

And Still I rise

Hi there.

Thanks for popping in. Just got in from Clarity Towers. Been busy getting ready to welcome you to our virtual Clarity Open Days tomorrow. It won’t be the same, I know. But it is what it is. There’ll be projects and demos and all sorts of great sales and offers and giveaways. So just come along and join in. We will have some fun…

Anyway. Today in the SHAC-Shack we spoke about a wonderful woman Maya Angelou – my shero. I told you it wasn’t just her poetry, but her voice and her body language which, when all combined, would entrance you, right? So here is a recording of the lady herself in later years, reciting one of her best know poems: And still I rise. Just take the time to soak this up. Listen to the words, watch the face and study her movements; she is truly an inspiration to me.

I think about her often. And the older I get, the more I enjoy her. There’s something so liberating and empowered about her, don’t you find? True grit.

I’ll leave it there.

Love and Hugs

Barb xx

  1. Maya Angelou’s books really moved me. After watching the clip you’ve shared I’ll be looking for a book of her poetry, as you say, an amazing woman xx

  2. Some years ago now, you introduced me to this wonderful lady. She changed the way I think in many ways and for that I am very grateful.
When my daughter got a job in a local primary school, I volunteered to read with the children. I have never been into a school with such a lovely, happy atmosphere and guess what they have written on the walls throughout the school? Yes, quotes from Maya Angelou. That is the ethos of this school and it’s caring staff.
See you tomorrow. Hugs. Annette. X

  3. What an inspiring woman. I’m stressing tonight wondering if I was booked for Ditton. I don’t think I was but if I was then I must have booked an hotel! No idea where! Lol. Hx

  4. Wow! I have read that poem many times but it puts a whole different perspective on it seeing & hearing her speak it herself. Thank you for sharing!

  5. Wonderful. Thank you, Barbara. I’d never come across her other than her name when she died until you mentioned her in one of your Youtube Tuesday sessions. After seeing this I shall have to look into her.

  6. So moving. I have seen racism when working for the MOJ. Not just black but across all colours and creeds. Surely if you prick us the blood is still the same colour. Let us return to childhood. Children do not recognise a difference. “Mother to child. “Have you a new black friend. Child “ (did not notice ), he is lovely. He is friendly and kind

  7. Thank you for reminder no me to read her work again. It’s a good time to review and reflect.

  8. As you said it makes such a difference watching her say her poems. Definitely a voice you could listen too.
Thank you for sharing her with us again.

  9. Just ordered I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. Can’t wait for the postman. Thanks for the recommendation Barbara.

  10. Hello Barb, your sharing of this wonderful strong woman with all of us has not doubts given us inspiration and courage. Bx

  11. Thank you for sharing this video. I’ve never heard Maya Angelou speaking her poetry before. What a deep well of emotion, intelligence and humour.
