Thanks for popping in. In fact, thank you for popping in most days, as you do. I appreciate you, and even though you may not comment, I know you are there – and that’s a good thing. Remember when I was under attack back in June for ostensibly plagiarising artwork? That was a very low point for me, and without wanting to relive the whole headstorm, what I remember was the overwhelming show of support from friends and your good selves. Many, many hundreds of you stood up and defended me. You shielded me so that I could refute the allegations and put things right, which I did quickly.
As Maya Angelou – my darling shero – once said, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” All I remember from that debacle was feeling amazed and humbled, comforted, and reassured. I will never forget it.
Yeah, 2019 has been quite a year in our little Clarity bubble, hasn’t it? Instead of reducing our presence on shopping TV, instead of slowing down when hitting the big 60, we had to double – nay – quadruple our efforts on HOCHANDA, and it’s been pedal to the metal all year! Thing is, it pushed us to sharpen our wits, to draw more, design more, innovate more! There’s nothing like a battle to make you focus! And it has been a bit of a battle to be honest, it really has. With hindsight, I think that we conducted ourselves professionally throughout, and I am glad to see that all our collective hard work has paid off. The Good Ship Hochanda is still very much afloat, and we are glad of that.
It hasn’t all been work mind! Pottery Wednesdays have been the highlight of my weeks! I have so enjoyed getting to grips with clay!
I remember working on this particular vase for weeks. I also remember when we raku fired it, and it went horribly Pete Tong! Gutted. Didn’t work out quite the way it was supposed to, but now it is my favourite piece! Very Grungy, and I wouldn’t trust it not to leak! But it looks sexy – and it makes me happy. The vase, girls! The vase!!!
Oh! We went to Hawaii too, with the family. That was pretty epic. So yeah! Plenty of play time too! Grace brought all the Aloha leis and birthday celebration tablecloth, plates and trays all the way from New York in her suitcase – right down to the little Hawaian dancers and the hanging pineapple (see it?). What a lovely surprise birthday party that was!!
See Gracie top left? She joined the Clarity team too this year, and is just about to start earning her stripes in the States, when we launch Clarity USA. It has taken months of planning, but we are finally there. Claritystamp Inc. (GREAT NAME!!) is moving forward, the website works in Dollars (and Euros), our lovely Amazon USA shop is already taking orders, and Grace will starting welcoming all our American friends next week. She is pretty stoked about it all, I can tell you.
We received several awards this year too, which is very flattering. We were too busy to attend the award ceremony, but there are some nice glass trophies all along the window ledge in my office at work, to remind us that we must be doing something right! Look forward to giving them a nice home in our new reception ! NEW Reception!! Oh boy oh boy! That’s right. We go into the new year with a new building, a new factory. Pinch me.
You’ve heard me say it often: we have good days and growing days. 2019 has been a good year AND a growing year. For many of us. There have been a few upsets, a couple of disasters, some crises, and there have been wonderful days, when I could cry with pride and joy. It has certainly been interesting. The thing is, it is never the event, but how we react to it which ultimately affects us, right? And I only have to look around me to see what anguish, what struggles and what sheer hell on earth many poor people have to endure. If I ever have the audacity to say I am having a bad day, slap me. Or send me to the nearest hospital to have my eyes opened.
I would like to share with you also, that we – Clarity – donated £1,000 to Children in Need this year, and £1,000 to Crisis for the homeless just before Christmas. I tell you this not for a pat on the back, not at all! I tell you this so that you know that although £2,000 may be just a splash in the ocean, it’s YOUR £2,000. Together we are much greater than the sum of our parts, eh.
2020? Well, the move is at the top of the to-do list. We’ve got a couple of very very cool things in the pipeline, new concepts, new ranges, which were all put on hold during 2019 because we needed to put all our energy into TV and production. I am looking forward to the New Year. I am exciting to move forward again. There’s so much to do! One day at a time…
