What a Wind up!

What a Wind up!

Hi there.
Thanks for popping in.
Been going like the clappers today –
Have ticked a load of boxes!
Got up really early and came into the office in the dark.
Decided to power through some TV proposals and play catch up.
On the way into work, I was listening to the radio. The DJ was going on and on and on about nothing in particular, talking a load of rubbish really. I could feel myself gradually getting wound up, like a coil. It was a combination of his pitch and the inane babble.
So I did the obvious: switched the radio off.
Same with the news. When it gets to me, I stop watching it.
Same with Facebook. When it winds me up, I stop going to it.
Same with individuals. When they upset me, I shut them out.
It doesn’t matter what they think of me; that’s their business.
what matters to me is what I think of them.
In fact, I stopped buying newspapers years ago, for the selfsame reason. I could feel myself getting agitated and angry, and since there is absolutely nothing I can do about any of it,
I  D E T A T C H.     I  D I S E N G A G E.
No point in spending my vital energy on bull, on stuff that gets me down, but over which I have absolutely no say or control. In fact, it seems the more energy I give it, the more I fuel it in my mind.
Life’s too short to waste it, don’t you agree?
It’s not a cop out; it’s self preservation.
Blocking negativity or senseless drivel can only be a good thing.
I find I have much more positive energy to spend on more constructive things, and my head doesn’t get clogged up with other peoples’ stuff. Because that’s what it is: just STUFF.
Then drink a smoothie instead of coffee,
and the whole world looks different!
Love & Hugs,
Barb

  1. I so agree. I've always considered I have ostrich tendencies but you're right it is self preservation. Life is just too short to get het up about things you can't change. I remember the day I stopped swearing at the photocopier. Changed my life! Take care. Gill xx

  2. Totally agree. In fact, I don't really mind what others think of me. I always try and be the kindest and most caring I can and if that doesn't suit, then tough. I like me and that's good enough lol 😉 x

  3. Yay!! That's the way to go! Or – you could send your Dave into the man cave to make some new tools out of old!! Very satisfying I must say, and much more useful. hahaha.

  4. I agree that you have to disengage sometimes. I have had to let a friend go recently as I couldn't cope with the demands and negativity she made me feel. It was tough at first, but liberating. She recently got in touch, and I have just let the message sit as I don't want to have all the negativity again.

  5. It’s something I felt I needed to do a few months back. I was turning into a keyboard warrior and I didn’t like me.
I’m much nicer now I ignore the nasties.

  6. Agree with you 100% As I've got older I'm far more selective with company. The days of spending time in the company of people I'm not fussy on have long gone, which gives me more time with the ones I love. X

  7. Me too all the above! It’s all too depressing and as you say if you can’t actually do anything about it, it’s easier to block it out. Xxx I am having some crafty playtime today to see if I find something I didn’t know I could do???

  8. I do agree Barbara that there are times when we have to pull up the drawbridge and take refuge from the things that aggravate and do what we need to do in order to live our lives in a way that suits us as individuals. On the other hand it is also good that there are people out their that feel able to campaign for change and rattle a few cages, but I agree that most of us are not in a position to effect great change to anything so staying detached is by far the best way. Getting in the zone with a bit of crafting works wonders. x

  9. Wish I could do that sometimes, just zone people and things out if they annoy me or make me feel bad. I think I am getting better at not taking on everyones problems as I get older. Xx

  10. As you say Barb …and you know I try to think this way also ! My mantra for this is …..
'A fire will only burn , if you give it oxygen'….so starve it of that and it will go out ! xx

  11. So agree with you Barbara, well said xx been watching today's shows absolutely brilliant once again, I can't thank you and the team enough for introducing me to Groovi, I love it and the facebook group are so lovely and helpful, Thank You everyone xx

  12. Oh I so agree with every word Barbara. I can't remember the last time I read a newspaper and there are times when I turn the news off too. It would be a shame to lose the benefit of such a relaxing few days with your mum. Hope you enjoyed your smoothie. Xxx

  13. Totally agree- I haven’t read a paper for years, and rarely watch the news. As to what people think of me, I don’t care – at the moment i’ve Got the biggest black eye ever seen due to surgery – lots of stares from people, do wonder what they think but I don’t care I know why it’s there. Watched Maria today fantastic goodies again Barbara, saving up for nec after ally pally ❌😘❌

  14. I agree 100% Barbara! People think I'm strange when they mention something that has been on the news and I say 'when did that happen?' They can't understand me not reading newspapers or watching every news report. But as you say it's up to each individual. So as i said I agree totally!

  15. I'm a switch off/shut out person too…totally opposite of my OH who has to have 'noise' all day, every day! Thankfully I'm lucky enough to have a small craft room where I can escape for peace and quiet. Can't remember last time we bought a newspaper either. Like the new plates/stamps from Maria's shows today but trying to be 'good' at least until Harrogate! Xxx

  16. I agree ! Haven’t read a newspaper for years ,gave up when the children were younger ,the spelling was not good. My husband only watches the local news.So pleased you had a lovely time with your mum.xxxx

  17. Good for you Barbara, I do the same, can't stand listening to the drivel between the music on the radio for very long, even some of the music gets me wound up and if it does off it goes, Only read the odd article in the newspaper and have stopped watching the news so often, too depressing. Went to see Victoria and Abdul this afternoon, with all the other OAP's ha ha. Judy Dench was brilliant as usual. Not sure about it though, wasn't what I was expecting.xxx

    1. Hi Pam – totally agree with you. I prefer not to have the radio on in the car at all – some easy listening music is my choice, or nothing at all. Love and hugs, Gilly xxx

  18. Wise words as always. I try to be kind every day, and that's my way of making a difference in the world. I can't change other people's thoughts and behaviours, but maybe a smile or kind word or action will help to brighten someone's day x

  19. I totally agree with all that you have said Barbara – I rarely watch the news now, because it winds me up too much and I have been trying hard to shut down to anything that I don't have the power to change. Love and hugs, Gilly xxx

  20. Hi Barbara
Oh I agree with you too, some of the radio presenters in the morning are just shouting rubbish at 40mph at you which wears you out before you get to work and the news just depresses you. I can't think when I last bought a newspaper, I glance at the headlines occasionally on my iPad and read what interests me if I feel like it, that way I have choice.
    Take care.
    Love Diane xxx

  21. I feel and do exactly the same thing. When we have no chsnc of changing things there is no point in stressing. You do so much good, keeping us crafting and creating art xx
