It’s Limerick time! xxx

It’s Limerick time! xxx

Hi there.
Thanks for popping in!
It’s a winter wonderland here on theAshdown Forest.
Very, very beautiful.

Friday’s blog a private peek, right?
Well, when I was younger I used to live in Bavaria, Germany,
and boy! Did we get snow!
The Germans are so prepared for it though!
There would come a point when the snow got so high that there would be a SCHNEEKETTEN (say Schnaykettn. Perfect) alert,
and out would come all the snow chains for the tyres,
and on we would trundle.

Over here, we get 3 inches, and the country grinds to a halt!
E V E R Y  Y E A R.
But hey ho. This too shall pass. It always does.
I just hope the poor people out in the cold can get into the warm.

Taking the afternoon off to regroup
and try and remember who I am!
I’ve given up tea and coffee, because it was making me even more anxious than I already am!!!
Peppermint is a lovely tea. Caffeine-free, so that’ll do.
Any other caffeine-free suggestions? And don’t say Vodka!
Not an option here!

What a whirlwind this month is.
This time last year we had just got back from a week
in California at the CHA. So it was just as mental then too.

And this was the year before!

Phones, Ipads. Glamorous ? NOT!!!

If you always does what you always did,
you’ll always get what you always got…

Are we attending the CHA this year? Nope.

Looking out over the white garden,
I was thinking…
it is time for a Limerick!

Oh we do love a limerick, don’t we?!

I shall give you the first 2 lines,
which you can then copy and paste below, and finish the limerick.
I’m in need of a good laugh, and I imagine you are too.

A winner will be picked on Sunday,
to win a £20 Clarity Gift Voucher.

Sound good?

Right. Here goes….

There was a young lady from Bow,
Who went for a walk in the snow….
la la la la la
la la la la la
la la la la la la la la.

I can already hear the responses !!!!

Be safe.
If it’s icy, don’t go out unless you absolutely have to.
I absolutely have to.

Love & Hugs,
Barb

  1. There was a young lady from Bow,
Who went for a walk in the snow….
    The snow was so high
    It reached to her thigh
And gave her a chill down below. !!

    Keep warm everyone x

    1. I make my own tea, with an unwaxed lemon, chopped up ginger and local honey. Local honey is better as you get used to the local pollen and it helps to avoid hay fever etc. You can use the same lemon and the ginger all day just adding a little honey to each mugful. It has the advantage of being better than Lemsips etc, and staves off UTI's. Tastes good too.The staff at the Spa gave me enough lemon and ginger at breakfast to last all day at the Retreat last year. Taylors of Harrogate do some beautiful fruit teas. My favourites are the Lemon and Ginger, Spiced Apple, and Sweet Rhubarb, which all do taste of what they say. xxx Maggie

  2. If you like fruit teas Barb try that new Boost from Tetley – Blueberry and Raspberry – it's lovely and I don't like Raspberry. Or Twinings Orange and Lotus Flower Green Tea or Strawberry and Vanilla – not Twinings that one but it is lovely. Xx

  3. I am feeling a bit of a wimp this morning. We did not have a lot of snow but it was slippy underfoot so, although I possess and know how to drive my 4X4 in the snow, I chose not to risk putting my feet on the ice. I have already wrenched the muscle in my arm and at my age, I am not going to bounce well if I lose my footing. So I cancelled my weekly craft session. Of course, now the sun is out and all the snow and ice has vanished. Still much better safe than sorry. I hope your family got home safe and sound last night in all that snow down your way. I was brought up through snowy winters. In fact my mother was convinced I was going to be born in the snow, it hung on so long that year, and I remember slipping and sliding to school for weeks in the winter, and risking death on the open corridors and stairs there which turned to sheet ice. We all looked after each other in those days. All the ashes from the fires were used to grit the roads and everyone would turn out to clear drives and paths and push any cars stuck on our hill. Had a lovely parcel from Clarity yesterday and an email telling me that another one is on its way. All sounding very good, especially as the second one is destined for my little granddaughters, bookmarks and postcards to colour. The older one is a real bookworm, and spent most of Christmas buried in JK Rowling's Fantastic Beast, wrapped up in the shawl I had crocheted for her with her MDF/parchment lantern to light her book.

"If you always does what you always did,
you’ll always get what you always got…"

You are so right. That is one reason why I have thrown myself into different types of crafting since I have been on my own. There is always something new to learn and new places to go and people to meet.

I hope that all the people along the east coast get through today without damage or worse, with the forecast tidal surge. Another thing for me to be thankful for, living at the top of a hill miles from the coast Take care everyone when you are out and about in the cold weather. Sending hugs to you all. xxx Maggie

    1. Oh Margaret, ashes on the snow – that brought back memories I'd forgotten. Dad used to do that on our paths. Sorry you didn't get to go out but I think you're right to take care. x

    2. Dad's job meant he had to go out at any time of the day or night 24/7 and we lived partway down a very steep hill, with a drive that was also very steep. So we had to keep the drive completely clear and well salted, with the car filled with chains, spades, salt and mats to give grip to the wheels. He had to drive up our drive, down to the bottom of the road to the turning circle and then straight up the whole hill. He never failed to get out and I never remember him needing a push. Slow and steady did it every time. xxx Maggie

  4. Before I think about the Limerick – we have Decaf tea ALWAYS. Den had to change to it as ordinary tea was making his heart race. Have not looked back since we changed. Also REDBUSH is great either with or without milk. I like it cold as a soft drink – yes I know strange but true.
Many be back with the limerick xx

  5. Hi Barbara. Yes, it's lovely here on the Forest and for once the gritters were out on my lane last night. Still iced up and snowy inside the gates but can enjoy the views from the warmth of the house. Inspirational, isn't it? Just glad I don't have to go out to work nowadays.

  6. There once was a lady from Bow,
Who went for a walk in the snow,
    She slipped at Kingstanding,
    had a terrible landing,
but escaped with a stub to her toe!

  7. There once was a lady from Bow,
Who went for a walk in the snow,
    She slipped at Friends Clump
and came down with a bump,
but escaped with a stub to her toe!

  8. M&S do a Lemon, Ginger and Ginseng tea which I love. I make it in a little China teapot with matching cup and sit back and relax while I drink it.. no phone, tablet…just down time. It works!

  10. Last one I promise! Barbara you will know the locations!

There once was a lady from Bow,
Who went for a walk in the snow,
    She slipped at Camp Hill,
    had a nasty old spill,
but escaped with a stub to her toe.

  11. There was a young lady from Bow,
Who went for a walk in the snow,
    She tripped on a twig,
    And off flew her wig,
Now has icicles on her ears,
    Just so you know!

Not drank coffee for years – love peppermint tea and Twinings Forest Fruits is a particular favourite xxx

  12. Not a big hot drink lover, cold though…now you're talking; elderflower cordial made up with sparkling water – summer in glass! AND…. have you tried waitrose low alcohol cider (in this case other ciders are NOT available) it is soooooo refreshing. We keep it in just in case the son pops in, he's a policeman and so he finds it easier not to drink alcohol generally, (it's not worth it). Best caffeine-free coffee we've found is Waitrose (again) their individual no caffeine filter coffees are hard to beat on taste.
Please don't think I only shop at Waitrose, if you have a Santander 123 account sometimes they do offers (called 'my offers') where you get discounts if you use your normal debit card!
    Is cup soup caffeine free?
    Love
    Maggie (Yorkite)

  13. When it comes to teas, I like a cup of Twinings green tea with lemon, only don't leave the teabag in too long, it tastes bitter if you do. The other one I like is another Twinings green tea with peppermint, I like that especially after a meal. However, still like a nice cup of 'rosy lea' with milk. Here's my limerick:
There was a young lady from Bow,
Who went for a walk in the snow,
To visit her friend called Flo.
Only Flo wasn't in, she forgot she was coming.
So, she caught the bus and went home!!!!
    Ta Da! Xxxxx

  14. Afternoon Barbara, just back from the hairdressers after having a good cut! It is icy cold here with a very cold wind. I too love peppermint tea and also my first drink of the day is lemon and ginger which is delicious and kick starts your metabolism too. Have a wonderful day.
    Hugs to you and Dave

  15. Hi Barbara. Be careful in the icy weather. I survived the winter of 1946/47. Was only a few months old and Mum managed to feed everyone despite us having a very steep hill between home and the shops. It's so nice to snuggle up indoors with some comfort food and enjoy the snow covered landscapes.
There was a young lady from Bow
Who went for a walk in the snow
    She saw yellow writing
    The message was frightening
Who did it-we don't want to know!
My Diamond folders arrived today so I am eagerly awaiting my my 1st instalment. I loved everything we had last year.
    X Chris

  16. Deleted my comment cos it kept changing Vimto to vinyl and my Limerick didn't make sense.
Sugar free vimto and hot water, think its caffeine free and it's lovely

  17. Hi Barbara, glad to hear you're having an afternoon off. As for tea suggestions, chammomile, but you know that already. Do you know what's soooo good. Buy a black peppermint plant. Plant it in a trough/container, or put it in a big plant pot and plant that in the ground, it spreads like wildfire if you don't. Harvest the leaves during the growing season, as much as you want, it's very hardy, freeze them, and you've got delicious fresh mint tea all year round. And now you've reminded me, off to raid the freezer myself!!!

Freezing here, and very windy on and off, but very little snow at my bit, and most of that melted with the sun on it. I do like to watch snow fall, an Asperger's thing, so I wouldn't mind a nice heavy snow shower, just as long as it's in between food delivery days! Hope no one here is caught up in the flood risk evacuation areas, sounds scary. And everyone else take care if you need to go out, I think everywhere is in for ice tonight.

Obviously I'll be leaving the limmerick to everyone else. But I think instead I'm going to cheer myself up this weekend with a wee shop in your sale 🤗. Hope you have a chill-out, content weekend with Dave, in front of your log fire.

    Love Brenda xx

  18. Yay, I love coming up with these limericks! Hope you'll like this one.

There was a young lady from Bow,
Who went for a walk in the snow,
    some ice made her slip
she did a rather good flip,
    and landed with legs akimbo!

We didn't get much snow where I am, and none of it settled, which I find quite a shame as I love snow! I suppose it makes it much safer though, nothing for anyone to slip and slide about on, and keeps the roads safe. Hope that you enjoyed your afternoon off. As for tea/coffee, what about camomile? Lovely and calming, caffeine free, and I find it tastes even better with a sprinkle of sugar. Or, failing that, just have a big mug of hot chocolate! 😀

  19. There was a young lady from Bow
Who went for a walk in the snow,
    She was surrounded by white,
And walked til it was night
And failed to see which way to go.

    Or….

There was a young lady from Bow,
Who went for a walk in the snow,
    The snow was so deep
    She fell in a heap
Her bum in the air and on show!

So many more I could think of but all involved slipping on the ice! Enjoying the limerick competitions Barbara. Thanks!!

    Sue x

  20. I like Yorkshire Decaffinated, also Camomile tea is supposed to relax you. Used to drink Camomile with Spearmint but not seen it for a while. Don't like frui teas. Try to chill Barbara, I know, easier said than done with your workload.xx

There was a young lady from Bow,
Who went for a walk in the snow,
    She slipped and she slided
    and then she broadsided
Into the robber who'd taken her dough

  21. Hello Barb,
Things only come to a complete stop darn sarf. Up in the hardy north we still carry on. In Consett I've seen snow there in June!!!
    Now to the limerick.
There was a young lady from Bow,
Who went for a walk in the snow,
    She saw a smart chap,
    Fell into his lap,
Now that's as far as I'll go!!

  22. M&S do a Lemon, Ginger and Ginseng tea which I love. I make it in a little China teapot with matching cup and sit back and relax while I drink it.. no phone, tablet…just down time. It works!

  23. Hi Barbara
Little bit of snow left on the grass this morning but it didn't cause problems. Emma sent a photo of the snow coming down in Aberdeen, she made me laugh because last year she was out in it having a snowball fight with her flat mates, this year she didn't want to go and get food in case she slipped!! Enjoy your search for a new drink, the green bottle spiced berries cordial is lovely with hot water and makes a nice change to rea. Right limerick time.

There was a young lady from Bow
Who went for a walk in the snow
She fell in up to her middle
    Had a little piddle
    And promptly exclaimed "oh no!".

Sorry that's what you get when you ask hubby for inspiration!
    Love Diane xxx

  24. Another fun blog. – formthe tea, I particularly enjoy Red Bush tea which is caffeine free and yet still feels like a nice refreshing cuppa.

    My contribution for the limerick:
There was a young lady from Bow
Who went for a walk in the snow…..
    She trod in some turds
And said some rude words ………
Not a happy young lady from

AH well, I tried but there are some really funny ones Barb. No doubt you will have a laugh choosing the winner

  25. Hi Barbara – no snow to speak of here, thank goodness! I have very fond memories of Bavaria – I worked in a swanky hotel (Schloss Elmau) just south of Garmisch when I was about 18; it's a beautiful part of the world, isn't it?

Now, I can't always manage the limerick challenge but, the reference to Bow bringing to mind a certain music hall song, I've come up with:

There was a young lady from Bow,
Who went for a walk in the snow
    Just like Burlington Bert,
    She hadn't a shirt
Yet still strolled out though 'twas 30 below!

  26. Purer Pfefferminztee – vor allem in größeren Mengen – greift den Magen an aufgrund der starken ätherischen Öle. Besser ist es mit Kamillentee zu mischen.

Ansonten.. decaf tea.. no problem at all. I have since years decaf Earl Grey from Twinings. Otherwise I won't get any sleep when I have it in the afternoon.

Also any fruit tea is naturally caffeine free as roibush tea and herb tea.

  27. I have switched to de-caff tea on doc's advice, heart flutters have stopped. Also my daughter gave me a juice infusion bottle last night, you put slices of fruit in middle cavity and fill with water. I have had lemon slices in today and am drinking lots more water, very re-freshing. We only had a little covering of snow and it soon went. Been very cold though. I suppose it is not worth investing in chains etc in this country we do not get enough snow. I can remember my dad changing tyres in the winter to special ones but we lived in Lincolnshire then and I can remember good snowfalls. xx

  28. Sat and watched the snow fall yesterday evening. Froze overnight so de-icing the car the car this morning involved chipping it off! Finally managed to craft this evening YAY!! Have a good weekend. Xx

There was a young lady from Bow
Who went for a walk in the snow
    The drifts were all deep
Snow piled up in a heap
But she loved how it made her face glow!

  29. M&S do a Lemon, Ginger and Ginseng tea which I love. I make it in a little China teapot with matching cup and sit back and relax while I drink it.. no phone, tablet…just down time. It works!

  30. Years ago when I cut chocolate from my diet in order to shed a few pounds a friend gave me a few boxes of ayuverdic tea that was made from the husks of cacao beans. I can't say that it tasted as good as chocolate but after drinking it you got a chocolate hit. I suppose it contained the same addictive chemical as the real thing xx

    1. 0r

There was a young lady from Bow,
Who went for a walk in the snow
      She sunk past her knees
      Her knickers did freeze
So stiff legged she stomped back to Bow

  31. Hi Barbara,
I love limerick day! So many funny ones, keeps me smiling all day. 🙂 Here's my attempt at one.
There was a young lady from Bow,
Who went for a walk in the snow.
A dapper man by her side,
He stole a kiss and she sighed.
And off she skipped with her beau.

  32. Hi Barb, yeah some of the stories about travelling in less than an inch of snow are crazy. Fair enough some areas did get a lot more and it was dangerous driving, but other nah! My hubby also drinks Rooibos or as it is called in English – Redbush tea, give it a go with a drop of lemon juice and chunks of fresh ginger.
    Here is my attempt

There was a young lady from Bow,
Who went for a walk in the snow….
She came across a lone snowman
And said hey there, dear Frosty,
Why doesn't your cold carrot nose glow?

    Good luck all. Bx

  33. There was a young lady from Bow
Who went for a walk in the snow
    She fell on her arse
    Where young Bob saw all
And he left a yellow patch in the snow

  34. There was a young lady from Bow,
Who went for a walk in the snow,
    She refused to wear Boots
    Had everyone in hoots,
When she slipped and her pants were on show!

Yes, that has happened to me! xxx

  35. There was a young lady from Bow
Who went for a walk in the snow
    She slipped on some grass
    Fell flat on her arse
    And is now singing soprano

Thanks for all your lovely thought-provoking blogs Barbara, I don't comment much but read lots 😍

  36. There was a young lady from Bow,
Who went for a walk in the snow…
    The north wind was blowing,
    Then it began snowing
As the temperature was 10 below zero.

There was a young lady from Bow,
Who went for a walk in the snow…
    She slipped head over heels,
    Very sore she now feels,
Oh, how the scratches and bruises will show.

  37. my hubby asked for his contribution to be sent……………..hope the language is not too unacceptable!!.

There was a young lady from Bow,
Who went for a walk in the snow….
    She slipped arse over tits,
    And then did the splits
So went home with her pants full of snow!! boom boom…..

  38. There was a young lady from Bow
Who went for a walk in the snow,
    Since she was caught short
I'll leave you this thought –
    Don't ever ingest yellow snow!

  39. Ha ha ha – loved catching up on all the limericks! I managed to travel the length of the country on Friday, and there was actually more snow when I got to London than when I left Inverness. Today I left a freezing and frosty Sussex (-2 at 10 am) and got back to a rather balmy 8C and sunshine x
