T H I S I S S T E N C I L B R I L L I A N T !!!!!!

Hello!
How are you?
(I can feel a song coming on….)
Day off here.
Went to Tunbridge Wells to buy a birthday pressie for our Jayne.
Found something I think she will love.
Roasted a leg of lamb and served a nice lunch.
Was even able to eat it!
Teeth are behaving reasonably well,
so hopefully the mental dental saga has subsided.
Had exactly 1 hour for my blog,
before we go to Jayne’s garden party.
I love it when you get an instant result, don’t you?
The E-Bosser (aka my Mangle) was still out after last night,
but most of my usual stash is at the rugby club.
So I had a quick scout around and found the Colour Burst Powders.
Water-colour paper was on the side too….
I remembered something I saw in a stencil book a while ago.
Can’t find the book of course, but as I recall,
the author has the same name as me,
except she spells it with an E instead of an A.
Grey, not Berbere !!

Anyway, I can’t remember the exact method, but she actually used our stencils too, which is why it jumped out at me in the book!
So I had a go a-la-Gray…
Ready for a simple step-by-step stencil trick?
Wet a sheet of Water Colour Paper with a paint brush.
Puff some Colour Burst powders at it.
I used Merlot and Ochre.
Let them dart about and spread a little.
Mmm. Well that didn’t really do what I had hoped…
keeps going undeterred.
Wet your brush and sweep back and forth to make a wash.
Now what ?
Let’s add a little blue puff…

Bit better.
Let’s spritz the whole thing with water.
Jury’s out at this stage…
But as I’ve been saying all week,
It ain’t over till the fat lady sings!

While the messy background – err I mean the abstract wash –
is still wet, place a stencil on it.
I went with our Treescape.

Place 4 or 5 sheets of copy paper on top,

then run it through the mangle,
or dye-cutting machine of your choice.
You just need pressure.
I reckon you could leave it under a very heavy book overnight
and get the same result.

Check this out!
And this is just the blotting paper, the copy paper!

The water colour paper is less vibrant, more mystical.
Very lovely, very arty.

Also, you have got a slight indent from the mangle, which I like.
Once the water colour paper has dried,
you can add highlights with a white pencil too.
So there you have it.
Two lovely stencil pieces in precisely 10 minutes!

And now we’re off to the party.
Typical Jayne.
We have to wear a hat and bring binoculars.
Either she’s having an Ascot Party,
or her neighbours are up to no good, and she want us to investigate!
I’ll tell you tomorrow.
Love & PEACE,
Barb

  1. Lol Berbere!! Love it. Great arty pieces as always Barb. Hope you have fun at Jayne's – whatever it is you all end up doing. I shall wait with baited breath. Xx

  2. Hi bloggy friends, having a nice day with family and celebrating my sisters birthday. Present day today so I must go and get them wrapped. Hope everyone is having fun in the sun……..or like me staying in the shade as much as possible! XX

  3. No she has lost an ear-ring in the garden and wants you all to look for it. Just being kind and making sure you do not get sunstroke whilst doing so. Enjoy the party. These are both lovely prints but I prefer the crisper one. I might just try this in a while, we have a quiet house today as hubby and I have been left on our own while Greg and Amie are in London. xx

  4. Hi Barbara – so pleased to hear that you are having a lovely day. Enjoy the party – look forward to hearing all about it tomorrow! Love the artwork! Hugs Gilly x

    1. Hi to all of my lovely blog friends – I hope that you are all having a lovely day, with some fine weather. We have had a lot of steady rain – started last night and carried on until about 3.00 pm this afternoon! The garden and the flowers have really enjoyed it, and are now looking so much better. We have just had a very lazy day, and the sun has now decided to come out. Love and hugs to you all, Gilly xxx

    2. Hi Gilly, all we've had is a light shower this afternoon. Just cooking dinner now and have 10 mins or so before I have to put the veg on (lamb in oven). Also had someone come and quote us for a new staircase so that's exciting and something to look forward to. Wont be saying that when we have to take the carpet up though ! I want to get some Groovi going but haven't had chance and we're off to the races tomorrow, dentist Tues, lunch at my old work and a new greenhouse being put up. It's all go! Might get some time on Weds ! xx

    3. Evening gilly pleased your resting can I have your rain please I have done some groovi this morning before it got warm now just resting too hugs xxx

    4. Hi Gilly,
Yes we've had some rain today too – I got rather wet up at Durham this afternoon, but dried off quickly once it stopped! Love and hugs Alison xx

  5. Ooh, I like! And shall be calling my messy backgrounds "abstract washes" from now on!

Hope the party was fun – sounds different anyway!

  6. WOW! FAB-U-LOUS. I am inspired. Pity I don't have any stencils 🙁 Will have to remedy this asap. Enjoy the party.

  9. Glad your mouth is definitely settling down now Barbara and what a great technique, these two pieces are fabulous. Enjoy Jayne's party. x

  10. Hi Barbara, glad you were able to enjoy your lamb. I've got some colour bursts I haven't used yet (along with other things…..) so might have a go at this. Great effect on both of them ! Have a lovely time at the garden party. Intriguing as to what you have to wear/take. We're off to the races tomorrow afternoon/evening at Windsor,I don't think I'll worry about a hat and hopefully I wont need a rain one but who knows! xxx

    1. Gosh Jackie – you are going to be really busy! Good luck with the new staircase – we had to have one years ago in our cottage and it had to be custom made, because of the twisting design. It was made in 2 pieces, and we had 1 night when we had to go up to bed, via a step ladder. We were much younger then, not sure how we would get on now! Have fun @ the races – hugs Gilly xxx

    1. Evening dear blog friends I have mannaged to do some groovi this morning while it was cooler then been resting sending lots of hugs your way hugs to all on the blog xxx
Extra wee hug for Dorothy xxx

    2. HinSheila,
You seem so much more cheerful and glad that you're able to get some Groovi work done. Just make sure you don't do too much though. Love and hugs Alison xx

    3. Hi Sheila – pleased to hear that you have been able to do some Groovi today. You would have loved our weather today, much cooler and the rain did smell lovely too. I will try to send some up to you – take care, many cooling hugs – love Gilly xxx

    4. Evening all I've mannaged a little bit more on my groovi elephant with the henna plate from this months diamond club groovi plate it's so relaxing I'm in bed now so resting again I will say goodnight to you all xxx

    5. Hi Sheila it sounds like you had a good day yesterday, that elephant is gorgeous, I'm waiting for the chance to sit down and play with this plate, maybe today! Sending hugs xxx

  11. Hi Barb,
Really glad that your toothache seems to be getting much better. You have used one of my favourite stencils today and I love what you've done although I think I prefer the one on copy paper although I do like the muted tones of the watercolour one. I might have to get some of the Colour Bursts one of theses days as I do like the effects you can get with them. Have a great time at Jayne's party – I am intrigued as to what you will be doing with a hat and binoculars though!! Love and hugs Alison xxx

    1. Hi to all my lovely blog friends,
It's been a mixed day here today, really muggy this morning and early afternoon then we had rain and it got fresher for a bit. Had a crafty morning make ng a Groovi card for my cousin and was really pleased with it. I tried out using glitter on the parchment and was well chuffed with the result. Didn't have the proper Pergamano glue so tried Flake and Glitter glue that I had and it didn't buckle the parchment so that was good. Have a good night everyone, hopefully it will be cooler than of late. Love and hugs Alison xxx

    2. Hi Alison – so pleased that your card worked out well, using the Flake & Glitter glue. I have some of that, so I will give it a try soon, Love and hugs Gilly xxx

    3. Hi Alison. It sounds like you've had a very productive day. A bit of sparkle on parchment is the perfect finishing touch. Love and Hugs xxx

  12. One of my favourite stencils for lots of techniques. Not sure which piece I prefer, but I do like the more misty look. Had a mini sprinkle of rain, but spent most of the day in the new station at Birmingham New Street, a very confusing space, so much larger and more spread out than the old station. It is more like a busy airport until you get down to platform level. We were meeting up with some blog friends, all got together to meet Darnell from America, who had broken her journey especially to meet up with us. A great time was had by all, as you would expect when crafters get together. Glad that toothache has subsided, Barbara. Have another great week of Retreats. xxx Maggie

  13. Hello my dear blog friends. I've spent the day in between making meals, watching Liam on the Wii U. My head feels as if it's spinning!!! 3 weeks of his holiday down..only 6 more weeks to go!! School was much more 'Grandma friendly' than college is. Hahaha!
I hope you've all had a good day. Love and hugs xxx

    1. I have the same issue, Julia. Very frustrating but then I realised I could probably experiment with the 5×7" stencils. In general though my favourites are the squares, especially the treescape.
      Carol

  14. So glad your tooth seems to be better, and I hope you enjoyed your break tonight.
Lovely results with one of my favourites stencils. I have used it twice for birthday cards this month, which were much appreciated. I used craft card, to get brown trunks and added white ink all over the background before colouring over the white. Now to try your lovely, arty version.
    Carol

  15. Hi Barbara
This is wonderful, I really need these colour bursts as the effect is so different each time. It's great that you show us that it doesn't go o plan, that way we won't panic when we try it. Good to hear the tooth ache is letting you eat again, roast lamb is a real favourite too. Hope the party was good, I'm intreagued by the hat and binoculars! Happy birthday Jayne.
    Love Diane xxx

    1. Hello all my lovely blog friends, I'm running a day late! I was at a local international guide camp yesterday helping with the craft activities – a whole day spent trying to teach the girls o knit!! All of them went away with a knitted flower they had made, some were more holes than knitting but they all had a go which was the main thing. The wind blew a gale and the rain hammered down at the end but it was a good day. Home for a hot bath and food and I was asleep within minutes of putting my plate in the dishwasher. I hope everyone is ok. Sending hugs all round xxxx

  16. Hi Barb,
Love this and will give it a go. Glad you enjoyed your lunch and waiting to hear all about the clarty party (as opposed to Clarity Party!).
I'm late as usual – a bit like my friend Diane today!!!
    Maureen xx
