An unbearable day….
Hello there!
Greetings from Germany!
Still here.
And boy did we get duscht today!
Blimming funny actually.
You know the expression, “Fill your boots?”
Well boy oh boy! Mine got filled with rain in Freising today!
This was the photo on Google which enticed us….
Toytown loveliness!
One minute, I was enjoying all the bears everywhere,
Bizarre…
Had to look it up when we got back to the hotel and had wrung out our socks…
What’s with all the gayly painted bears in Freising, I asked Google….
Apparently, back in 724 a.d. a chap called Bishop Arbeo ordered a bear to carry his luggage over the Alps, because the bear had killed the Bishop’s packhorse. Hence there’s a bear on every corner in town.
Oh yeah? That old stunt. I’ll have to bear that in mind…..hahaha……get it?
This one looks particularly Bring-it-onish, don’t you find.
Mum here, trying to do a Paddington Bear impersonation….
and a saddled bear is still the symbol of the city
There. We’ll all sleep better for knowing that little anecdote.
Not sure about the authenticity of the story…. But it makes for fun photos.
Oh. FYI, Freising is also home to the oldest Brewery in the world.
Read up on the brewery when we got back too. Apparently, it was founded in 720 a.d. Oh yeah… About 4 years before the bloke turned up with the bear and the suitcases story. Must be good beer…I’ve heard some tall tales told at long bars….or was that bears?
So there we were, wandering up the cobbled road, when it suddenly came over very, very dark.
We just had time to dive into an ice-cream parlour (no flies on this old chick!), when
the heavens opened, and booooom!
It hammered down…..stair rods!
Not so clever on the bikes today, eh…
Dave shot over to Woolworths,
but they were about as useful as Chocolate toothpicks,
so we just had to grin and BEAR it….
Really what was needed was a snorkel and flippers!
Haven’t laughed like that for a while. Does the soul good.
Wrecks the boots, but great for the sole….
Shall we have some fun?
Ok. It’s limerick time!,
Ready?
There once was a bear called Fred,
Who insisted on wearing bright red…….
Over to you!
Finish the limerick and write it below.
Then Sunday, we will pick a winner and send them a £20 gift voucher.
Come on! You’ve got to be in it to win it!!
Back to Blighty tomorrow, back to reality.
Sad to leave, happy to be coming home.
See you on the flipside!
Lots of love,
Barb xxx

Hiya Barbara. Lol that was a fun read. Those bears look fab
Not great at limericks but will give this a go
There was once a bear named Fred
Who insisted on wearing red.
He was making a racket
As his clothes cost a packet
But he did feel quite classy
As, don't you know,
Wearing real fur is quite Pase'

Hope tomorrow is better weather for you!

There once was a bear called Fred
Who insisted on wearing bright red
Freising folk would delight
At his tool belt so tight
But just wished he'd wear trousers instead!
(My limerick refers to the rather saucy bear in your photos Barbara)
Like this one!
There once was a bear called Fred
Who insisted on wearing bright red.
He thought it quite brave
and sure to please Dave
And Barbara thought it quite dashing!
There once was a bear called Fred
Who insisted on wearing bright red
And when the rain hit his head
He yodelled till his face went red
Barbara you made me smile again ,we once went to Malta it rained and rained and rained memories Happy home coming big crafting hugs xxx
This is my partners Limerick
There once was a bear called Fred
Who insisted on wearing bright red
While all in red except for his head
There was always a smile from Fred
You can tell we are still in the hotel while bungalow dries out and is put back together

Hi, Your blog cheered me up. Thank you
Here is my little limerick offering
There once was a bear called Fred,
Who insisted on wearing bright red.
It made him not sad
But extremely mad
Have a safe journey home
Cheers Fi x
There once was a bear called Fred,
Who insisted on wearing bright red,
He got caught in the rain,
Oh what a pain,
"I'll dry off and craft" he said.
Hi Barbara, so pleased you managed to have an ice break with Dave and your Mother. Safe journey home.
There once was a bear called Fred
Who insisted on wearing bright red
He forgot he was in Germany instead of in Spain
So he used his bright red cape to keep of the rain
There once was a bear named Fred
Who insisted on wearing bright red
When it faded to pink
It caused quite a stink
With the folks who'd nicknamed him Red Fred
Well lovely pictures. Not much good at limericks but in for a penny, in for a pount.
There once was a bear called Fred
Who insisted on wearing bright red
He went on a Cruise
Drank far too much booze
He is now, very blue and not red!
and another silly rhyme
There once was a bear called Fred
Who insisted on wearing bright red
He tried to be a Saint
And that what he ain't
Not George and the Dragon
Because he fell off the wagon
So he's one red, dead Fred
Best wishes and apologies
Anne (Reading)
Had to have another silly go
There once was a bear named Fred
Who insisted on wearing bright red
He looked at some paint
And thought it quite quaint
He got out his "geli"
And filled up his belly
Now poor Fred is one dead Teddy!
Well made me laugh – the family say I am barking
Anne (Reading)
I came up with two:
There once was a bear called Fred,
Who insisted on wearing bright red…….
While strolling the lane
He got caught in the rain
And he ended up sick, and in bed.
There once was a bear called Fred,
Who insisted on wearing bright red…….
Made a hat from red leather
Added colorful feathers
And stuck it on top of his head.
Hi Barbara, I know I keep saying it, but you ARE so funny 🙂 Thank you for sharing. Sorry you all ended up like drowned rats, but at least you didn't let it spoil anything, and it meant more ice cream! What's a bit of water, eh, we don't melt or go rusty!!!! Or not us Scots anyway, just blue with the cold!!!!! Don't believe I'm saying it 2 days in a row, but they are lovely buildings, well worth a good look. The bears feel a bit scary /creepy though!
Wish we had some 'drip, drip, drip, little April showers'!!! I had to water my gardens today, hard work, trailing a hose around the house from window to window, standing at the open windows watering a section at a time! And very scary too, always keeping an eye out for people coming past, diving in the window to hide, if someone is heading in this direction!!!! I never take the easy road – sowing seeds /growing some fruit and veg means regular watering!!! Mind you if we'd got some of your rain my seeds /seedlings and half my plants would be washed away down the road by now!!!!
Oh no, limerick time! Well you'll know by now – no can do!!! So I'll just spectate!!! And maybe brush up on my basic spelling /grammar instead after last night's offerings!!!!! That'll teach me, trying to write when the tank is totally empty! My English teacher would be sat with his head in his hands!!!
Hope you enjoy your last wee bit of time in Germany. And that your awaiting to do lists haven't grown any while you were away!!!
Love Brenda xx
Sitting at the airport in Atlanta so will be home tomorrow!! Haven't had internet for a few days. Hope you ate keeping well. Xx
Ah, I was worrying the crocs had got you!!!! This must be the sad bit, coming home, but at least it sounds like you'll have lots of good happy memories to keep forever. And I'm sure your mum and dad will be happy to see you. Phoebe and Cleo will definitely be happy to see you, do they put you in the dog house for a while for abandoning them?!!! I'm just plodding on, trying to keep my mind off the not good stuff. Still doing my wee bits of craft, had a wee blip but I think I've got it back on track again. Waiting for my elbow to settle a bit so I can try the walking the brayer thing :-). How's your withdrawal symptoms!!! Did you manage to talk your sister into taking you back to the craft shop?!!! Good to see you back on here xx
Hi Brenda, yes Phoebe and Cleo were happy to see me. My sister has a boxer and she went nuts! Her dog does the ignoring thing, so funny when she starts because she turns her back and does huge sighs! We didnt go back to the craft store, i wanted so much and was worried my case would be too heavy! Great memories of my time away now all I need to get is all my washing done 🙁 Glad to hear you have been crafting. What happened to your elbow?
Och, it's just stupid chronic fatigue syndrome. Usually this happens when I've done too much on the laptop, but I haven't been so not sure what's the cause, so don't know what to stop doing!!! It's like constant toothache, and when it's my knees, they also feel like there's gravel rubbing away in them when I walk! It started after being in the garden on Wednesday, but a lot of my joints are worse just now so may not even be related to that.
Glad Phoebe and Cleo are happy to see you. My last cat would go in the huff with me even though I was only out occasionally for a short time. She was like your sister's dog but without the vocals, she would sit in front of me with her back to me and just sit there for ages and if I moved she'd move so again she was always sitting right in front of me! It never lasted long though, she liked her food too much!!!! Daisy was scared and clingy after me being away for very long days to the Commonwealth Games last year, but she used to be happy to see me when I was having afternoons out. I'd also get presents of her toys, she brought them to the back door for me getting as soon as I opened the door :-). I'm having real problems with her just now though, remember we had our bad accident several weeks ago, it happened just after me coming in from the garden and every week since when I come back in she is so scared and spits and huffs at me and hides. It doesn't last very long and then she's fine again, but it's breaking my heart seeing her like this with me. I'm only in the garden once a week but I thought she'd have realised by now it was a one off and isn't going to happen again. I keep trying to point out to her, it was her that caused it to happen, not me, but she's having none of it!!! Hope you've got a good drying day for the washing! xx

Like this he went to the Clarity Store
bought stamps, stencils and more
A real Clarity-addict, as Barbara said.
What a great idea…hard to do a limerick in English
being Dutch 🙂
Have a nice weekend, Alie 🙂
Their was a bear called Fred who insisted in wearing bright red, from his head to his Toes, he put on his red wellies and rain coat together and wet out in the rain for got his red brolly. His hair got wet bus coloured red hair drip down on his face, his face became red and his hair was pink. As the sun came out and faded the colour. But loved the red face but boy was it sore as the sun rays burnt his face.
There once was a bear called Fred,
Who insisted on wearing bright red,
The chafing from his thong,
Proved this was all very wrong,
So he opted for a claret mankini instead.
Safe journey home !
There once was a bear called Fred,
Who insisted on wearing bright red…….
It was rather daft
How the hunter did laugh
Because now poor old Fred is quite dead!
Seeing the photos of that rain and your comment about bikes reminded me of the last time we were in Germany on our GoldWings. The sky turned black so quickly and the rain fell just like you've shown – absolutely miserable riding in that, and pretty dangerous too. Daft thing is, we're doing it again later this year 🙂
Love the bears, funny story. Well I suppose I had better give the limerick a little bit of thought as I am married to a Fred. Will come back with my entry when I have composed it. Will read the others then and probably have a good laugh. Sate trip home. xx
Hi Barbara, well that was some rain. Glad you found the perfect place to stop a while. I love the Bears, great way of showing off art, even if the story is just a myth. They remind me of the painted dolphin statues in Venice, Florida. Have a safe drive home tomorrow, hugs xx
There once was a bear called Fred
Who insisted on wearing bright red
He had such fun
In the heat of the sun
That by evening he needed his bed!
Hello Barbara
Really enjoyed your travels and looking at the pics and reading your comments.
I felt that Fred might be lonely so
There was once a bear called Fred
Who insisted on wearing bright red
He stood on every strasse
Attracting glances from women that went past
With the hope of finding Freda, a bear he could wed.
There was once a bear called Fred
Who insisted on wearing red
Now you see old Fred was a white poor bear
And was easily seen amidst the snow so fair
His friends would warn him to shed the red for fear of dread
Unfortunately old Fred had a big head and insisted on wearing red
And now his friends lament old Fred is well known
As — poor old Fred the Dead !
Love the photos, but what a shame about the rain! My guests who just checked in told me their mobile had been ruined whilst deep within their rucksack, in a knotted plastic bag!! Nothing like West Coast Scottish rain!!!
Now for an attempt at a limerick:
There once was a bear called Fred
Who insisted on wearing bright red
It clashed with his hair
And that just wasn't fair
So he dyed it all blonde instead!
There once was a bear called Fred
Who insisted on wearing bright red
It should have been yellow
Like that Peruvian fellow
But it was red from his toes to his head
There we go.. Best I can do tonight … xx Margaret Col
Great photos, pleased to read you didn't get washed away x
Hi Barbara what another beautiful place, you really sell the places you visit so thank you for letting us share your travels, I really enjoy them. Oh what a shame you had to force yourself to eat more ice cream whilst you sheltered from the rain and fancy finding a Woolies there to buy your brollies!
Right let's have a go at this limerick lark!
There once was a bear called Fred
Who insisted on wearing bright red
What fashion declared
He couldn't have cared
"It's just my style" he said.
Hmmm might have another go later!
Have a safe journey home.

Hiya Barb – sounds like an interesting day! Laughter is the best way to go for sure! Here's my limerick:

Hi Barb, Thanks for showing us some of Germany, it's very pretty, even enjoyable in the rain. Your photo yesterday reminded me of a house I saw somewhere in Cumbria or it could have been Devon, I can't remember, it was many years ago, it had a beautiful painting on the side of it. I wonder if it is still there or it may have been painted over by now, but it was really worth seeing. If anybody knows what I'm talking about perhaps they can let me know where it is.
here is my attempt at the limerick

Those bears look like another take on the "Cow Parade" (http://www.cowparade.com/) or the public art installations by Wild In Art (http://www.wildinart.co.uk/) where lots of versions of the same statue are sited throughout a city, each painted by a different artist – I think they're generally raffled off at the end of the display period, with the money going to worthy causes. I've always wanted to see such a collection because, as you've proved, they make for a great set of photos. Stumbled across one of the London Bus pieces in Leicester Square last November but couldn't find any of the others, so I just have the one forlorn photo!
Your blogs from Bavaria have made me quite wistful, reminiscing about my first time away from home, way back in 1979/80, when, quite out of character, I got myself a job as a "Helferin" (housemaid/waitress) at Schloss Elmau, a beautiful castle hotel near Klais, south of Garmisch. It's a truly beautiful part of the world.
There once was a bear called Fred,
Who insisted on wearing bright red
All his clothes were quite smart –
Well that is apart
From the onesie he wore when in bed!
Hope you like my take on the limerick!
There once was a bear called Fred,
Who insisted on wearing bright red…….
He was caught in the rain
which puddled his brain
and now he has gone home to bed.
… He danced in the Regen
And got God's fine Segen
And went home and went straight to Bett!
Hello Barbara,
I´m sure your mum knows the sentence:
"Der April macht, was er will."
This was typical for this month. You´ve just been in the wrong area. Here around Frankfurt the farmers need rain desperately…
Hope you like that:
There once was a bear called Fred,
Who insisted on wearing bright red.
One day he got lost in an arena
where a torero started his corrida…
Since that Fred had a chronic headache.
I cried out loud when I saw your mum´s Paddington imitation …
have a safe drive back and a beautiful weekend

Ok this probably shouldn't be done after two glasses of red wine…
There once was a bear called Fred
Who insisted on wearing bright red

Which is where that he found
It was his head that was red instead.

Ok i'll give it a go
There once was a bear called fred

And the pigeons would come perch on his head.
Glad you've had a loverly time, i learn so much when you visit places, thanks for sharing xxxx
Hi Barbara
Beary funny!
There are some quite unique places in Germany. I hope you have a safe journey home.
Here goes with the Limerick:
There once was a bear called Fred
Who insisted on wearing bright red.
He painted the town
Rain came pouring down
And all of his handiwork bled

There once was a bear called Fred
Who insisted on wearing bright red
He sought fortune and fame
Ended up as a Dame
And married his old friend Ted

Hello Barb, I love your blog posts about your travels, you always tell such funny stories. A very interesting one today about the bears and the brewery. Hope it stopped raining eventually. Reading through all the limericks having a good laugh, my brain is still asleep, and cannot come up with anything, so good luck to everyone that had a go. Have a safe trip back. Bx
Hi Barb,
Fabulous photos. The town looks lovely. The Bears reminded me of our last trip to London when the Paddington bears were scattered around the city. Dave and I had fun trying to find them all, but we only got to 20 ( out of about 50!) before we had to come home. Not bad for a day and a half though! Sorry you got so wet. Limericks are fabulous – I'll try to get my thinking cap on later. Love to all Alison xx
There once was a bear called Fred,
Who insisted on wearing bright red,
He thought he looked cool,
As he lounged by the pool,
'Til he fell and banged his head.
Thought this was appropriate as my Fred did bang his head in a pool while on holiday and we ended up in A & E. Needed stitches, ok though no lasting damage. xx
There once was a bear called Fred
who insisted on wearing red
He had great hairy paws
which when wet squelched outdoors
so when it rained he stood on his head
Great memories rekindled with your photos from the last few days. Jacqui
Loving the bears, but sorry to hear that you got soaked. Here's my go at finishing your limerick:
There once was a bear called Fred
Who insisted on wearing red
When Santa came calling
He gave him a warning
As Rudolphs nose is copy right-ed
Mmmmmm……. I'll stick to the day job I think!

Your trip to Garmisch reminds me of seeing real cows walking down the main street one day in August, some years ago, as they were expecting snow up on the hills.
My attempt at the Limerick.
There once was a bear called Fred
Who insisted on wearing bright red
His daddy and mummy
didn't think this was funny

Love the blogs of your travels Barbara. The photos are great. You make us feel as though we are there. Hope you've had a good journey home. Hope I'm not too late to try the limerick.
There once was a bear called Fred

Hi Barb,
It's great that you are having a good time, and can laugh at the rain.

Dear Barbara,
I live an work between Munich and Freising. So I know what you are talking about being "duscht" on Friday 😉
Now my try to do a limerick in English:
There once was a bear called Fred,
Who insisted on wearing bright red.
In Frenglish you can say he turned "rouged"
But in Freising he was "duscht".
Left was the same old lad – Fred.
