Time to reflect…

Time to reflect…

Hi there.

It’s still dark outside. Proper early. The quiet sort of early when the world hasn’t quite woken up yet.

Ragnar and Erik have just come charging in through the back door, both of them cold, bushy-tailed and full of purpose. Side by side, tails straight up like dodgems at the fair. They always arrive like that – as if they’ve got somewhere important to be. I do love those two.

After I fed them, I did something out of the ordinary. I sat down with a cuppa and gave myself five minutes. No phone, no emails, no texts. Just stillness. And in that small pause, I realised how rare those moments have become. Even when I am sitting doing nothing though, the brain is still churning at a million miles a minute. Crazy? Nah. Pretty normal, I think. I suspect I’m not alone.

So many of us – especially women – are constantly on the move. If we’re not physically doing something, we’re mentally racing ahead to the next thing on the list. We’re brilliant at it too. Efficient. Capable. Gritty. We just get on with what needs doing.

And goodness me, there’s always something that needs doing.

But here’s the rub. We get so good at meeting everyone else’s needs, fulfilling responsibilities, and ticking boxes, that we forget ourselves. Sitting still almost feels uncomfortable – like we should be earning the right to stop. I have ALWAYS felt guilty when I do nothing.

Even crafters, who understand better than most how nourishing creativity can be, fall into this trap. We know what it feels like when our hands are busy and our minds finally settle. We know how restorative making can be. And yet how often do we still push it aside?

“I’ll do it later.”
“Once everything else is done.”
“When I’ve got more time.”

Spoiler alert: everything else is never done.

My pottery hasn’t been unpacked since the Open Days. My pottery studio hasn’t seen me since then. That was November. I know the kids have been home for a fortnight, and they have been my priority. But NOVEMBER?

I don’t think we better ourselves by becoming even more efficient at what drains us. I think we grow when we invest in what feeds us – the things that make us feel alive rather than merely productive.

Those five quiet minutes earlier reminded me of something important: stillness isn’t laziness. It’s nourishment. It’s where clarity creeps in, where ideas surface, where creativity has room to breathe.

So next year – and beyond – I’m making a conscious decision to create more space and time for the things I love. More time for what fills my cup. Not instead of responsibility, but alongside it. No. I’m not retiring! But I am going to make a few changes, so that I can do more of what feeds my soul. Who’s with me?

Because when we nourish ourselves, we don’t become less capable. We become more alive.

Last day of the year today. Good day to sit and do nothing for a bit. Go for a walk with Dave. Hold hands.

The Germans have a wonderful phrase — Einen guten Rutsch — a good slide into the New Year.
So hop on the Clarity Bus, slide on in with us, and to every one of our friends and customers: einen guten Rutsch!

Wishing you a happy, healthy, prosperous, creative New Year.

See you on the other side!

Love and Clarity

  2. just taken my 5 minutes looking out at a bright blue sky and watching a plane go by. Wondering who is on board and where they’re going. Back home after a family visit or off to see new year in with family or just back to work? Wishing you, Dave, all the Clarity team and my Clarity friends a Happy and Prosperous New Year. x
PS Good to see the cushion came into play on Xmas day.

  3. A Very Happy New Year to you Dave and all at Clarity Towers. Love your blogs, Barbara. Thank you so much for all the time and effort you spend on your Clarity family. It is much appreciated and knowing you are there brightens my day. Todays blog gives food for thought and time for reflection. I’ve always thought that time sitting quietly is not laziness (though my husband would disagree!!).. I’m reminded of ‘What is this world if full of care, we have no time to stand and stare’. love to all. x

  4. Good morning Barbara
I am definitely with you. I have been taking care of my parents and worrying myself sick, and time for myself has become a rare luxury.
So, in the New Year, I vow to make more time to craft… it is therapy and healing in the most creative form.
Wishing Barbara and the whole Clarity Family a Creative Healthy New 🎊 XOXO

  5. We had some good news yesterday and so are ending this year on a good note.

  7. Wishing you and Dave and all the extended Clarity family a very Happy, Healthy and Crafty ( in a good way!) New Year
    Xx

  8. I learnt that when waking or when the sun comes up you should immerse yourself in the sun’s rising for a few minutes. It gets your circadian rhythm going. I like to look out of my bedroom window at the glimpses of the sea I am lucky to have or just step out into the garden: very calming.
Wishing you and your loved ones a very Happy New Year, Barbara and a big thank you for all you did for us in 2025. x

  9. I think that should be our new year resolution for all of us, spend 5 minutes each to stop and just be still! A lot of us, do so much for others in the family that we do forget to nurture ourselves!
Thankyou Barbara and all the clarity team for all that you do for us! Here’s hoping for a good year to come!
Enjoy your walk with Dave. X

  10. I’ve been journalling this year, most days, and just sitting and writing about my thoughts has been so helpful, and a proper moment of stillness. I’m joining a local journalling group in 2026, so looking forward to what that will bring too.

Glad you enjoyed your moment of calm, and great that you will plan more of them for next year. Happy New Year xx

  11. Wishing you and Dave precious moments together ❤️
You’ve achieved so much and that’s very true…….but…..time to be still isn’t a luxury. It’s a necessity and should be nurtured.
I thank you dear Barb…..and crew……for your support and wisdom which I shall carry with me in 2026. Blessings. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

  12. Thank you for that reminder!
I think some time today I will forge a path through the gazillion boxes to make access to my craft stash possible!
Wishing you, Dave and all the Clarity family a very happy and peaceful new year – don’t forget to stop and smell the roses along the way xxxxx

I am definitely getting (well, staying) on the Clarity bus and sliding into the New Year with you all.
Wishing everyone all the very best for 2026 xxx

  14. Many , many years ago I went on a time management course. The only thing I remember from it and have lived by is, make the best use of your time even if that is doing nothing.
Happy New Year to SHACERS, Groovers and all at Clarity Towers. Xx

  18. Yeah….right! When husband had the prostrate cancer a couple of years ago, I did too much and had a wobble when he was better. He got his new hip last week and, although I am helping him all the time, I am conscious I need free time, so I am in my craft room tidying up, and putting all the christmas stuff away safely. Just about to start the Clarity Christmas box with the acrylic sheets!
    See you next year.
    Love
    Maggie (York UK)
PS Little Miss MotsiCat has changed colour to black (from ginger tortoishell) – they say it’s because she has a lot of siamese in her. Wo knew?

  25. Looking forward to 2026, new home, new adventure, new craft room & hopefully more time to craft & do more research on my family tree.
I think taking 5 minutes just to sit & reflect on our surroundings is a good idea to try & keep each day.
I love reading your blog & everyone’s responses each day plus joining in with the FB lives & chatting to the Clarity Family – long may this all continue.

  27. Happy New Year. Doing nothing can be relaxing and restorative. We all need it at times. My Mom taught me a good lesson when I was young. She said no matter how busy you get with school, family, work, …. always take some time for yourself, doing whatever you want to do. It is good for you so you can continue to do all you do. She was a wise woman.

  28. Happy New Year to you and Dave and all of the Clarity team, you all work so hard. I don’t get much time to come into your live sessions but certainly appreciate being able to watch and catch up. Thank you all very much . Lots of Love Sue xxx

  29. I love reading your blogs Barbara and the brilliant hard work you and the Clairty team do. I hope you and your family have a wonderful new year ahead.
