Let go, and let Creatives be creative.

Let go, and let Creatives be creative.

Hi there,

That’s it! Clarity Retreat Week is over for another year. I would say that both my inky, painty workshops during last week and Linda Williams’ Groovi parchment weekend were very well received, and that participants got a lot out of them. We always put a great deal of thought and prep into these events, and it certainly feels appreciated. Even the little touches, like fresh flowers on the ‘lunch tables‘, put a smile on faces. I forgot to take photos though – far too busy making sure everybody was happy! Imagine my delight when said flowers all came home in a box on the last day! So now they are a sweet reminder of a joyous week, spent with good people.

We changed the floor plan layout this year too, and added a little auditorium at the front. So before each exercise or stage in the process, we all came to the front and listened and watched. That way, everybody could see the big overhead screen better, and everybody could hear better. I think it was an improvement.

It also got everybody to step away from their work periodically, to let it rest, let the layers dry. In my workshops we were getting to grips with acrylic paint, so drying time featured heavily. And as we know, whitework in parchment is all about letting the work rest in between layers.

I did remember to take a few action shots, but to be honest, we were so engrossed in the process, I wasn’t thinking about anything else!

Most of our guests have been attending for many years. When I look at the pictures I did take, I know all their names, and many of them are friends. We did have a number of newcomers too, like Margaret here, who was pretty chuffed with her work, and I just had to take a picture of her smile. She did a cracking job of what was really not an easy process on the Gelli Plate.

A couple of good friends were missing due to poor health, and were sorely missed. But we hope to see both Ken and Unity next time.

The groups were slightly smaller this year, which was a good thing, since we were tackling paint! Why were there less guests? Well, I reckon there are a few reasons. We have bolted workshops onto our Open Days both in June and November, so several people have come then instead. But mostly, the Clarity Online workshops have really proven popular, and people are able to join in lessons now without having to travel. For many, this is preferential. Mind you, we still welcomed well over a hundred people over the week; that‘s a lot of tea and coffee! There’s nothing quite like getting together with a bunch of like-minded people, and making art. The creativity in the room was palpable.

There were so many creative and clever people in the room, too. I had a note on my desk the whole time, to remind me to “Let go, and let creatives be creative.” It was important to stop teaching all the time, and let them be the creative makers and artists that they are. So we would have sessions of what I called guided play, in which we were learning the process together, as it were. But then I would invite them to have another go, start from the beginning and repeat the process. This was where they added their personalities to their art. I LOVED THAT.

If you weren’t able to make it, but you would like to get to grips with Acrylic Paint and Gel Press printing, then there is a solution! I am putting together an online course, which will include what we covered together at Ditton – and more. Actually, I’ve been working on it for a while, and now the summer is nearly over, and the leaves are turning, it is time. So watch this space. There will be several online modules spread over the Autumn and Winter months.

Oh! And I’ve already had a great idea for the November Ditton workshop, which will be bolted onto the Christmas Open Days. I hope you are able to come down to Kent for that weekend.

Open Days 14th-15th

Workshops with Barb and Linda 16th.

Before I go, I would like to say a huge Thank You to all the folks who helped make last week the success it was:

  • Linda Williams, for designing and delivering a superb parchment weekend
  • Paul, for managing everything, including me!
  • Lisa, for lovely lunches
  • Tom, for preparing the Shop
  • All the staff who helped set up and break down the hall
  • All those who attended. Without them, what would be the point?

And now, the Bank Holiday Monday is over, and it’s time to prep for tomorrow’s TV Show at Hobbymaker TV. I shall be on your screens at 1pm and 4pm, showcasing a brand new A4 sampler Stamp set. Perfect for those mini makes. I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve I’d like to share with you, so do tune in and support if you can. Where can you watch? SKY, Freeview and Youtube. Just look for Hobbymaker, or Hobbymaker.com.

Bye for now!

Love always,

Barb x x x

    1. It was great to spend time with you again, Sarah. I wish I had half your energy!! And thanks for all the ideas! x x x

  1. I have to stay close to my dad at the moment so lovely to see and hear about all the fun at the workshops. Will be signing up for your online course though I love a good background. Think I have more backgrounds than finished pieces but they are then always handy if I need something quick. Will look out for your tv shows too thanks for the reminder

  2. Sounds like a fabulous week! I really wanted to attend but the cost of travel and accommodation put it out of my reach for this year, I’ll set my sights on attending next year. 🤞
In the meantime I’ll join the online courses, I did a little dance, 💃🏼 (just in my head, it’s only 7.10am, I’ve not had my coffee yet! 😂) when I read that you would be running an online course! 🙌🙌
    I’ll look forward to that!
    Congratulations on a successful week.

    1. And Thank YOU Susan, for always being there, for making the long journey from Scotland every year. You amaze me with your talent. x x x

  3. Morning all,
What a great time we had, but Barb, that’s a bloody awful photo of me! Looking forward to the Open Days and Lesley and I will be coming, definitely. Can’t wait for next year and another couple of days getting messy in the craft world. XXX

    1. Not awful at all. You light up the room with your smile and your humour. And Leslie too. What a pair of sisters you are. I love it when you’re around. x x x

  4. So glad that all went well. It sounds like everyone had a great time. One year I will be there how and when is the problem but will try to join in with one of the online workshops if I can get round the tech bit. See you on Hobbymaker at 1 pm tomorrow.xx

    1. Thanks Catherine. Make a plan for next year. And join me online in the meantime. If you need technical assistance, Grace and Jim will be happy to help always x x x

  5. Thoroughly enjoyed my time at the retreat this year. It’s so inspiring to sit and craft with other like minded friends. Thanks to you, Paul and your wonderful Clarity team for all the effort and hard work that you put in to these events. Looking forward to the next one!! x

    1. Thanks Janet, for making the retreats extra special. Your gift blew me away. I just keep looking at it, and cannot believe how perfect it is. I shall share it in a blog if I may. x x x

  6. Hi Barb, I am sure that everyone had a wonderful time and learned a huge amount as well as being allowed to just be creative. Thank you to everyone that put in the effort so that everyone enjoyed themselves. Looking forward to seeing more photos, some of those posted on FB are amazing. Take care everyone. Bx

    1. Thanks Bridget. There was a great energy in the hall. Lots of clever creative people, just doing what they love doing. x x x

  7. Sounds like you all had a fabulous week at the Retreats and I have seen a few posts of artwork which look great. Looking forward to the online Gel plate workshop as at the moment my mobility is restricting my getting about. Especially catching trains and buses to get to Ditton which we have done the last few times we have been to the Open Days. Each time I look at my little bird on his wooden plinth I think of you and everyone involved with Clarity and the wonderful times I have had watching the demos and chatting to like minded people.

    1. Hi Sue. Hope you are feeling better soon. Look out for the Online Course. I will get it sorted soonest! x x x

  8. Have to be close for dad at the moment so loving reading about the retreats here. Looking forward to the online background course, love doing backgrounds have more of them than completed projects but that means always something to work with if I need something quick

  9. So pleased it went well, I like Jane, was pleased to hear there will be an online workshop, unfortunately the distance and cost to come to an event in Dutton is too much but online workshop really well for me.

  10. Glad the workshops went so well. I’m hoping that one year I’ll be able to join in! I can’t wait for the online course, I absolutely love creating with my jelly plates and your courses/demonstrations are always so brilliant! The last of our summer visitors leave tomorrow so I’ll be getting out my crafting gear after the house is back to normal!

    1. Thanks for sharing Sue! I also hope you can make it to a workshop in person one day. But in the meantime, the online courses hit the spot too xxx

  11. Looks like you had a lot of fun and a lot of satisfied customers.

I know how important it is to a lot of Clarity Crafters to come together to share their joy and like mindedness at these super workshops and to get that wonderful personal touch from you and the team (I was one) but now, due to unpredictable health issues (like many I expect), I now love the option you have given me to attend live online classrooms and also to catch-up and mingle amongst fellow crafter’s at the open days watching the experts at work.

This may sound a bit cheapskate, I hope not, but, for me personally, instead of spending money on hotel stays and travel, I would rather spend it with Clarity, purchasing the items required for the Classroom Course (How exciting would that be to receive a box of stash ready for the off). I hope what I have written is not too “bah humbug!” (although I am suffering from one of those unpredictable health issues at the moment) and the
at you understand where I’m coming from. x

    1. I always value your opinion Lynn. You are a very astute woman. I am glad you are in favour of online workshops. I can see their purpose clearly too. x x x

  12. It was a brilliant two days! The ‘auditorium’ made such a difference to being able to follow. Thank you. Looking forward to learning even more on the online course. Xx

    1. It was great to spend time with you and Maddie again. You both did so well! Thanks for the lovely cards x Much appreciated. x x x

  13. It was a fantastic two days & I learned so much. Really glad you will be doing the online course for those who couldn’t attend. The retreats are a treat to myself as it is so lovely to actually meet up and chat face to face with many crafty friends. I really noticed the quietness in the room this year as we were so busily engrossed in what we were doing. The new room layout does work really well. So many thanks to everyone for putting it all together xxxx

    1. Always lovely to spend time with you, Bev. I was wondering whether you might go to the Rye Jazz festival this weekend . Did you? xxx

  14. So glad that the retreats all went well.
I look forward to seeing everyone’s projects on the Facebook pages.

    1. Thanks, Katharine. They did so well! What we were doing wasn’t easy, but everybody embraced the challenge brilliantly. x x x

  15. So glad everything went well and so sorry not to have been there this year. We were away, holiday booked at exactly the wrong time! As you say, online courses have hit the mark with me too and will look forward to joining you as more of these become available. Take care. Xxxx

  16. Thanks to
you and all the staff for another successful Workshop experience. At the end of day one it was lovely to know there was more to come. Now just waiting for suitable time to try the gelli plate properly at home.
Thanks so much Barbara, take care xx

    1. Glad you enjoyed the Retreat, Ann. I have been dreaming of a huge barn, where we can spend a whole week together. Where there are loads of bedrooms, so we can stay there too, and we can just dive into art. xxx

  17. So glad all had a great time ! can’t wait to see some of the makes and an online course sounds a great idea. We’re on holiday at Seatown in Dorset, just along from Charmouth and Lyme Regis, we’ve been so lucky with the weather, the big kids are here and the dog, they’re going home tomorrow and we will leave on Friday instead of Saturday. I’ve been doing some Groovi but keep looking out at the sea view ! Have a good Hobbymaker. X

  18. So glad all went well for you and the crafters.
Due to ongoing health issues for both me and Ray neither of us can travel far. It looks like future online courses will be the norm for me. The taxi fare to the hospital costs more than the course so I will have to be sparing with my purchases. (That comment put a smile on my hubby’s face!!!!!)
Will be watching you on Hobbymaker tomorrow.
    Safe travels.

  19. This was my first retreat (I don’t think it will be my last!). What a great couple of days meeting some fantastic people and learning so much. It is very evident just how much work must go into putting these on, and I, for one, am very grateful that you do this. My thanks to you, Paul, Lisa and all the Clarity team xx

  20. The workshop was wonderful! Thank you Barbara and team. I really enjoyed it but, as usual, the two days went far too quickly and of course I spent far too much money. Oh well, you can’t take it with you!
Looking forward to the November workshop and I’ve just decided to buy a ticket for the Open Day so I’ll be looking forward to that as well.

    1. Always a pleasure to spend time with you, Pat. You are such a creative person! And your artwork is superb. x x x

  21. I had a fab two days, learned a lot and enjoyed the banter with my table mates.
Big thanks to you, Paul and the team which made everything run so smoothly – I never underestimate how much work goes into the retreats. See you next year!

  22. I had a fab two days, learned a lot, enjoyed getting messy and the banter with my table mates.
Big thanks to you, Paul and all the team who made everything run so smoothly – I never underestimate how much work goes into making it all work.
    See you next year!

  23. I really enjoyed the Groovi workshop and seeing people that I knew from previous years. Last year I did the stamping workshop as well but because they were in the same week this year I couldn’t do both as I couldn’t leave my animals for more than three days.
    Love and hugs
    Yvonne
