Lyme Regis and Time out..

Hi there

Thanks for popping in. Have moved my Mac from above the cold garage into the much warmer and more welcoming dining-room. So you never know! I may well start blogging more often now! Time will tell…

Had a little break away from reality in Lyme Regis, down in Dorset this weekend. Such a beautiful place! We met up with Dave’s sister on Saturday, to celebrate her birthday, then went walking and fossil hunting all along the beach on Sunday. Went on a guided walk with a real boffin; such an interesting fella called Chris, who was just happy to share his knowledge! Found a few little ammonites, and LOADS of sea glass for pottery. All in all a fantastic weekend. Blue skies, great hotel on the seafront – all round lovely…

We’d already watched the film Ammonite, with Kate Winslet as Mary Anning, but decided to watch it again. It was super cool to watch the movie, then find the shop, and her home, and tread the lanes and recognise the town through the scenes in the film.

Came back to Earth with a big bump yesterday. Erik the Viking turned up late last night, having gone awol for a day, and looking absolutely awful. Drenched to the bone, and clearly hurt. Poor little thing had managed to drag himself back to the house as far as the back door though. Dave took him to the Vet. Broken leg. So he’s got to stay there for a day or so, to make sure the splint/leg is ok, then the vet reckons he can come home, but has to stay in a cage arrangement, to restrict and minimize movement for “a few weeks”. Fingers crossed he gets better and is back to his beautiful self very soon. Gutted for him. But also mighty relieved because it could have been much much worse. I shall have a pottery sale soon – to pay the vets bill!! Yikes.

And Ragnar is very lost, without his buddy to hang out with. Here he is, in a box. Which is where he has been pretty much since Erik left for the Vet.

That’s Life, eh? Ups and downs. Peaks and troughs. Good and bad. We saw an elderly gent in the rain in Lyme Regis on Monday, struggling to hold his trousers up, and only wearing one shoe. We didn’t know what to do, except ask him if he was ok. Yes yes yes, he responded. Clearly he wasn’t. And of all the lovely things we saw and did at the weekend, the image of that poor old boy struggling will stay with me forever. Life really is hard.

Here’s a stampset which has never been more poignant…click here for a very special bloggy price

Yes. Ain’t that the truth..

Thanks for reading. I feel better now we’ve chatted.

Stay dry, stay warm, stay safe.

Love Barb xxx

  1. Oh no, poor Erik, do hope he’ll be ok, amazing what they go through to get back home (been through that years ago), and how resilient they are. Sending hugs to all of you.

Lyme Regis, we were there in September, staying in Charmouth where we used to go fossil hunting with dad when little girls. Spent years there on holidays in caravans and loved it, took our kids and their kids too. We went back for the last two years and enjoyed it. Nothing changes. Glad you had a good time.

    Sending positive thoughts.

    1. You were just down the road from us. I went to school in Lyme Regis and my brother and nephew both proposed to their wives on the Cobb. I love the story of Mary Anning but have never watched the film in solidarity with her family at the liberties taken with the truth. Just to say Mary Anning was not gay and her letters prove it. I wish film companies would stick to historical fact when making films about real people. That quote comes to mind ‘why let the truth spoil a good story’.

  2. Great pictures, so glad you had a lovely weekend & found some fossils & sea glass but sorry to hear about Erik. Thankfully he was able to make it home so you could take him to the vet. Ragnar will need some extra cuddles until Erik comes home which hopefully won’t be too long.
Now I need to catch up with my dahlia ready for Thursday – a job for tomorrows list as todays is still rather full !!

  3. Poor little Erik – but he’s young and fit, I have everything crossed for him.
Lyme Regis looks lovely. Fresh start all round.

  4. Glad you enjoyed your weekend away. Poor Eric hope he gets back home soon. Ragner does seem a little lost and lonley in his little box. Now I like Sue must get back to my dahlia I won’t let it get the better of me!!!!

  5. Lyme Regis sounds delightful and I’m glad you were able to take some time to relax and unwind. So very sorry to hear of poor Erik’s misfortune though – they tug at our heartstrings so much, don’t they, these little critters, and we just want everything to work out OK for them. It’s the hardest thing about cats, that you can’t protect them from the big wide world, they need their freedom to roam… At least with a dog you take them out, rather than let them out… Hope all turns out well – and good luck with keeping him quiet and still for long!

  6. sending lots of love to poor Erik, in so much pain and discomfort…also lots of love to sad Ragner, who does not know where Erik is and when he will see him again. he looks so lonely….hope Erik makes a speedy recovery. xx

  7. I do like Lyme Regis! Haven’t been in years, but still love all the coast along there!
Sorry Erik has broken his leg. I’m sure he’s a survivor and will pull through especially when he sees his partner in crime!
    Hope you are ok Barbara.

  8. Glad you had some time away never been to Lyme Regis but sounds fascinating xx sorry to hear about poor Erik am sure he will soon be in the mend xx Ragner will be lost so he will pleased when his brother is home bless them xx

  9. Glad you had a few well deserved days rest and relaxation. Thank goodness Erik managed to find his way back home and that you were able to get him the attention he needs. xxx

  10. Glad you managed to have some time away but how sad to come back to a poorly Erik. It’s so upsetting when our furry friends are unwell and in pain. They DO bounce back quickly though….come on Erik! I’ve only been to Lyme Regis once, and that was many years ago. While we were there, they were filming “The French Lieutenant’s Woman”, before Meryl Streep was very well known. Lovely memories.

  11. What a roller coaster few days for you. Hope Erik mends quickly. Glad he was able to get himself home where he can recover. They are a real worry, I’m sure Ragnar will give him the third degree when he gets home from the vets 😘

  12. Glad you were able to get away for some r and r! Lovely photos…we used to know exactly where to go forsea glassbut not any more! Shame, I love it. Plastic rubbish instead now! So sorry to hear about little Eric, hope he makes a good recovery. See you on Thursday.xx

  13. Poor Erik – Such a worry – hope he mends real soon!

Glad you had a lovely time on your long weekend – well deserved change of scenery.

  14. Sounds like you had an enjoyable and relaxing break. Extremely well deserved and way overdue.
So sorry to hear Erik is in the wars, not what you or he needed just now and as you say probably a mortgage will be needed to pay the vet’s bill. Hopefully he will be up and about soon and frustrated with his cage but back with the family and his pal Ragnar. Take care and try not to add this problem to your stress level. Fab pots by the way and I am sure they would sell well.

  15. Hi Barbara
Glad you had a good weekend, moved to Somerset just before first lockdown which is about an hour away from Lyme Regis. Lovely part of the country. Sorry to hear about Erik hope he mends quickly they are a worry but well worth it.
    Love Ruth & Jackie x

  16. Poor Erik and poor Ragnar all on his own. I hope they will soon be back together again.
We used to spend a lot of time round Charmouth and Lyme Regis. You might like to read Persuasion by Jane Austen, which was set mainly round Lyme Regis and the Cobb. xxx Maggie Craner (Silvercrafter)

  17. Lovely photos, pleased that you had a great weekend. Sorry to hear about Erik, wishing him a speedy recovery, and to be reunited with Ragnar & yourselves soon. xx

  18. Glad you and Dave had a lovely time in Lyme Regis. Great photos! Sorry to hear about Erik but glad he made it back home and is being cared for at the vets now. Hope he will recover and be re-united with his brother and yourselves soon! Hugs xxx

  19. I left a comment on FB under your photo so won’t repeat it! So pleased you had a lovely time. Just to say we were towing our very long caravan heading towards Colyton and the SatNav sent us down through Lyme!! Seeing that building at the bottom of the hill with the arch before turning sharp left through the high street brings back nightmares. Luckily everyone was so helpful stopping traffic so we made it then up that steep hill out onto our route and I didn’t hear a cross word! Hope Erik makes a good recovery x

  20. Thank you for sharing your ups and downs with us Barb. I’m glad a beautiful weekend was had.
I’m sure Erik has a few more of his 9 life’s left, and they both will be re united soon.
What a wonderful way to raise funds for the vet bill. Pot Insurance, and I’m sure you will make some very happy customers with the sale of your beautiful pottery, which we all know is hard for you being so critical of your own amazing work.
We believe in you and so should you.
Sending you all love and hugs and Erik a speedy recovery ❤️

  21. Pleased to see you had a good weekend away, you needed some time for yourself. The pics are lovely and with your permission I would like to attempt to paint two of them.
Your pottery should sell well and help towards the vets bill. Poor Erik, he probably went looking as he missed you. Good that he found his way home . Ragnar looks so unhappy without his brother, hope they are reunited soon. Give him an extra cuddle until then.
    Stay well.🍒

  22. 1. glad you got a break with Dave and family and enjoyed celebrating
    2. sad to learn of the image of the old man
    3. poor Eric; he’s a strong little fella – sure he’ll pull through
    4. I don’t think you would have any problems selling the pottery

  23. I do like the look of Lyme Regis – it was a favourite haunt of my Mum who liked to paint the scenery there, Sorry to read about poor little furry 4-legs and I hope he gets well soon. Ive been out of touch with the crafty world for two weeks on a fabulous cruise and am now catching up. I suffered a fall on the ship and the ex-ray showed up two small spinal fractures so it’s enforced rest for me……….

  24. Hi Barb,
Glad you and Dave had a great time away on the Jurassic coast at Lyme Regis. It is an amazingly inspirational area. Looking forward to some amazing pottery designs inspired by your ammonite and sea glass finds!
Sorry to hear about poor Erik, you would have no problems selling some of your amazing pottery to help with the vet bills!
Take care, see you back in the SHAC!

  25. Get well soon Erik. Poor boy. I’ve a feeling that Ragnar will want to share the cage with his brother when he gets home. Glad you had a lovely time in Lyme Regis. Can’t wait to see what you do with the sea glass. x

  26. Oh dear poor Erik, I hope he is on the mend very soon. Your photos of your holiday are great Lyme Regis is such a lovely area.

  27. How brave of Erik to make his way home, bless him. He’ll soon be back with his brother causing havoc. Glad you enjoyed a bit of R and R all be it tainted with the vision of the old fella. What a world we live in eh, such beauty on one hand and such cruelty on the other. Like you say….that’s life. Big hugs 🤗
