Do your Bit .

Do your Bit .

Hi There!
Happy Monday! Sunny day here in the southeast of England. A welcome change after yesterday’s deluge! July? July?!?! What is happening ?! Hundreds of people are dying in Canada because of the insane heat, the icecaps are melting away, and we’re flooding.

Anybody who can’t recognise extreme climate change, who doesn’t think global warming is real, is a fool.

Here are 10 very simple ways to help, to do your bit. Copied and pasted from the internet. And before you say, “Well, what‘s the point of doing these piddly little things when Leicester Square is still it up like a Christmas Tree all year round?” . If we all do OUR BIT, we will have much MUCH more positive impact than you think. And Leicester Square, Times Square, Union Square. Whatever. WE have to do the right thing.

10 Ways to Stop Global Warming

Want to help stop global warming? Here are 10 simple things you can do and how much carbon dioxide you’ll save doing them.

Change a light
Replacing one regular light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb will save 150 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.

Drive less
Walk, bike, carpool or take mass transit more often. You’ll save one pound of carbon dioxide for every mile you don’t drive!

Recycle more
You can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide per year by recycling just half of your household waste.

Check your tires
Keeping your tires inflated properly can improve your gas mileage by more than 3 percent. Every gallon of gasoline saved keeps 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.

Use less hot water
It takes a lot of energy to heat water. Use less hot water by taking shorter and cooler showers and washing your clothes in cold or warm instead of hot water (more than 500 pounds of carbon dioxide saved per year).

Avoid products with a lot of packaging
You can save 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide if you reduce your garbage by 10 percent.

Adjust your thermostat
Moving your thermostat down just 2 degrees in winter and up 2 degrees in summer could save about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.

Plant a tree
A single tree will absorb one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime.

Turn off electronic devices
Simply turning off your television, DVD player, stereo, and computer, when you’re not using them, will save you thousands of pounds of carbon dioxide a year.

I’m not sure that we can STOP global warming now; but I bet we could slow it down.

I have to keep my side of the street clean, that’s all. I have caught myself getting resentful about the shocking refuse in the ocean. Why am I diligently washing out a Marmite jar for recycling, when whole countries are just dumping their shit in the Ocean ? But then I have to do my bit. I have to. If we ALL just threw our hands in the air and exclaimed, “what’s the point? We won’t make a difference,” we’d be right. But if we ALL decided to be more conscientious, and actually give a damn, then we WOULD – all of us together – make a difference for sure. It’s a numbers game.

Anyway. I’ll get down off my (recycled and repurposed) orange box now. I just think it’s too easy to say “Not my problem”. It’s too easy to think we can’t do anything to remedy the issue. It’s just way too easy to blame THEM, and argue that it’s all too late (and anyway; we live in England, not Canada).

If you joined me in the SHAC SHAC today, you will know about the half price pencil offer this week.

We have also created a little bundle of accessories, which I was using and demonstrating in the VT below. How to get so many ore colours out of a box of pencils!

  1. Totally agree if we all do nothing then it won’t change xx any little change contributes to a much bigger change and a healthy and happy environment for everyone humans and animals and trees etc so let’s all do our bit xx
Love the SHAC this morning fabulous as always xx

  2. I totally agree. All we can do is the bit we can do but if we all did it then together we make a difference. We can’t moan about government inadequacy if we are not doing our bit.

  3. So agree. As a child I had a money box which had ‘Many a mickle (little bit) makes a muckle (big bit )’. True for saving my pennies and for trying to help to change things 🙂🤞

  4. So true. My brother lives in BC Canada but luckily 500 miles from the west coast in the Rockies where it is only in the mid 20s at the moment. My cousins in Vancouver are feeling the heat more sadly.

  5. I am with you. My daughter, her husband and three children live in Vancouver, so had to endure those temperatures last week. 90% of a small town was destroyed in 15 minutes and 250 people lost everything they owned. The emergency services had to go beyond anything they ever expected and so many people lost their lives. Unless we all do our bit, this will continue at pace.
Missed the SHAC this morning, as I was with my Groovi friends at Coleman’s. Will catch up later. Hugs. Annette X

  6. I totally agree with you, if we all did our little bit it would make a massive difference. It makes me mad when people waste a lot of cold water until the hot comes through and then cool the bowl down with more cold water. This is such a precious commodity we should be careful with it. When we moved here we changed all the light bulbs, appliances and many other things for more planet frieldly things. Cost a fortune but our bills are now lower too. We recycle as much as we can and our non recycle bin (collected fortnightly) is often less than a third full. I could go on but will just say that I am proud that we are doing our bit for climate change.
What a fabulous show yesterday, you really blew the doors off, so glad I recorded it and I can look at the samples again as there were some beauties there.
    Stay safe.

  7. Totally agree! Would it be possible to ask if your fantastic tape runners can go in the recycling bin when empty as there is no guidance on the packaging?

  8. Hi Barbara
I have to say I try to do my bit. Like you I recycle everything that is recyclable have done for years
I love the fact all your packaging is recyclable well done clarity. Hugs x

  9. Thank you. These are great and easy steps to take to reduce the carbon imprint and sometimes we need a good reminder.
I got so confused with all the pencils available that I started to search out what was the difference between oil vs was, pergamano vs faber castell vs prismacolor, etc. Confusing but I think I get it now. It would be great if you could do a summary with examples (maybe a video) of what the various pencils are for, what you can do with them, etc. it would be wonderful.

    1. Me butting again, sorry Barb,
      Oil pencils – very blendable
Wax pencils – same but in some instances could leave a film on your work, you would need to test the ones you have.
Faber Castel and the old Prismacolour are more or less equal in coverage, lightfastness and blendability but the new Prismacolour, following a takeover and new production, are not the same quality.
Pergamano B are good in blendability and lightfastness as are the A ones which can be used wet as watercolour or as dry pencils. Hope this helps.

  10. Hi Barbara we are well into recycling. Some of the food waste goes into the compost bin. We really have reduced the amount that we throw away. I loved this morning’s Shac Shack. All your offers are so tempting. Have a good evening. Take care. Hugs xxx

  11. I also totally agree. I’ve changed almost all of my light bulbs -the government gave us free eco bulbs some years ago and I’m still using them! Also always recycle, but buying stuff in less packaging is very difficult. Manufacturers need to address this one ASAP. Missed the Shac this morning (had an unexpected visitor) but will watch it with Bea tomorrow morning. We were enjoying the trees last week!

  12. We recycle everything we can, and even have a large trug in the bath and all ‘grey’ water goes into it during the day. Washing water, washing up water etc, and we use it for the toilet, save flushing and, as it only has soaps in it , it can also be used for watering plants. Can be a bit awkward showering LOL.

  13. We have just moved into a new house which is much more eco friendly, has an air exchange system, solar panels etc. It’s so energy efficient we have to keep the windows open, which is fine, except we have building work all around us, and so my whole house is covered in a fine dust! I’m hoping it adds to the insulation. Planning the garden around a planted tree too – every little helps x

  14. How right you are Barbara. Individually we won’t make a difference but collectively we can. I think it is horrifying what is happening in Canada with the heat wave and in America too. We have had so many warnings about climate change and we cannot ignore it any longer.

  15. Well said Barbara, totally agree. 10 little steps can lead to a better life for all of us if we all do our bit. Our little blue planet is too beautiful to keep on abusing it.

  16. Hi Barbara
I agree with you but I need a winge as well. The council in Somerset have just introduced another bag for recycling that makes 5 receptacles to put my ever growing recycling in. It now takes at least 30minutes to sort out which bit goes in where, that’s time I can never get back, but the alternative of teaching my 88 year old mother which bit goes in which bag is too stressful. But I shall carry on and hopefully prevent more land fill which doesn’t help anyone. Now that’s better thanks for listening.
    Love Ruth and Jackie xx

  17. Hi Barb, I do agree with you, and if we all try, the small effort may just make a big difference. I do my best to recycle and put the correect things in the bags or bins, and will keep doing so to try and make a little difference. Take care and stay safe everyone. Bx

  18. Exactly Barbara. Better to light a candle than to scream in the darkness. ( forgotten where this quote comes from)

  19. I recycle as much as I can and use refills when possible. Buy fresh from the green grocer but had to search one out. The I collect water. I get my leg pulled something shocking by my sister as she says there’s always a bucket in your bathroom. My hot water system sends the water up to the bathroom first so if I want to run hot water into the kitchen sink for washing dishes I can run nearly half a bucket of water off before I get hot water, so in the winter I use it for flushing the loo and in the summer for the garden keeping the water butts topped up.

  20. We recycle as much as we can but I do wish the ways of doing so were the same through out the country. It varies from 1 bin for everything to an array of bins or even worse plastic bags to sort the waste into. What is worse the houses that don’t have access to their gardens from the front of the house leave the bins in the street which makes them look very ugly & untidy.
Moan over but if we all do a little bit it will make a big bit in the end.
Need to go & sort my moment of Clarity order out.
