A NEW SHAC IDEA…

A NEW SHAC IDEA…

Happy New Year and Happy New SHAC idea !

We got together on Monday at 10am for the first session in 2026, and got started on what I think is going to be a great favourite of mine.

And what’s the object of the project, Barb?

Well, I wanted to create the illusion of strips of fabric, with a front aperture panel. Let’s look at HOW, so you can catch up with me if you fancy joining in next Monday…

  • Cut a heart out of a piece of our mask material (outer measures about 3.5 inches x 3 inches)
  • Place the aperture mask on a sheet of 7 inch x 7 inch stencil card
  • Use a ruler to draw lines straight across the page, different widths apert, ranging from 1/.4 – 1/2 inch wide. Don’t run the pencil line right to the edge of the card.
  • Run your pencil line around the outer edge and the inside of the heart too. I have lifted the mask below, to show you what you are aiming for, but i would suggest you leave the mask in place, because it is never that easy to replace it exactly.
  • Pick 3 to 4 colour ink pads. Distress ink or Distress Oxides are great. I went with Peacock Feather/ Crushed Olive/Spun Sugar/Antique Linen.
  • Use low-tack masking tape to isolate each gap between lines.
  • Then use a Spot-on sponge to sweep colour into the little panels. Do one at a time, using a sponge for each colour. Avoid going to the end of the card with the coloured ink.

That’s as far as we got on Monday. Next Monday at 10, we will carry on, adding the patterns into the fabric strips…

It is going to look so SO cool when we add the drop shadow around the white shape, and create the illusion that the white area is a separate card on top of the fabric layer!

Love and Clarity

  1. Once I can access my craft stash again, I am going to have a go at this project but using spare strips of backing paper/card. Will let you know how it turns out……!

  2. I thought this was a great idea! Hoping the masks arrive soon otherwise I shall be cutting up paper to make a heart shape!
At last the snow has disappeared! It’s now raining so normality returns! Haha.

  3. I was catching up with the SHAC today and love this idea. It’s a while since I’ve joined in I still haven’t finished the alphabet and I loved doing that but life got in the way. We’ve lots of snow here so hopefully will be able to do some crafting.

  4. Always so inspirational- loved watching the shac from the Dominican Republic – now waiting at the airport for our flight home which has already been delayed by 2 hours! Xx

  5. I have gathered the necessary bits together and aim to get it done before Monday so the ink has a chance to dry. Just need to find my stencil card if not I have a 7×7 card blank as I realised as I was writing that I had forgotten it.
Hopefully I have kept enough craft stuff out to keep me occupied until I can unpack everything in the flat xx

  6. Hi Barbara,
I absolutely loved today’s show, I was mesmerised by the visual trickery and overall effect. And, I couldn’t for the life of me work out how it was done when you first showed it to us…..brilliant!! Can’t wait for next Monday. xXx

  7. Love your idea- another fabulous project. Joined the SHAC on Monday- it was super fun watching your creative steps. Looking forward to Monday for the next steps.

  8. I watched the SHAC on catch up. I love this idea, such a cool project. I’ll definitely give it a go! I have February ‘s journal page in mind for the finished project if my efforts make the cut.

  9. I so loved doing this and have even finished my homework in preparation for next Monday. Somehow I managed to miss the bit about the pencil line on the inside of the heart so am hoping it won’t have too much of a detrimental effect xxx
