That Strange In-Between Time
Hi there.
There’s a curious little pocket of time we find ourselves in right now. Christmas has come and gone – the wrapping paper cleared, the plates washed, plates of chocolates still deposited strategically EVERYWHERE you look. There’s enough turkey left to feed us till Easter, and I am already planning when the BIG FAST should begin!
In the meantime, we are heading out the door this morning to meet Steve and his sons for the BIG BREAKFAST – so the cousins can see each other before they all head off in different directions.
There is a dilemma right there: Diet versus Bacon roll with avocado on the side. No contest! 😂
But I digress…back to the date. The 28th December.
It’s that in-between space.
Not festive, but not ordinary.
Not rushing, but not resting properly either.
I’ve always rather liked it. Everything has gone according to plan this year, thus far. The meals went well, the panto and musical shows were a BIG hit and absolutely 5*, the parties were fun, the gifts well received. All in all, a Christmas to smile about. Now there’s a little window of nothing planned, which feels like a holiday, it really does.
Thing is, this old workaholic really has to DO stuff, MAKE stuff. I cannot just sit and reflect; it’s not in my DNA. Can you? My brain has just relaxed enough now to start letting in new ideas for Clarity. I woke up buzzing with a new design concept, and had to write it down straightaway – even before I made the bed! Then I started thinking about the SHAC tomorrow – and boom. Back in work mode.
What are YOU going to do during this in-between time? If you’re feeling a bit rudderless, then make a little list of all those things you didn’t get to BEFORE Christmas that are still pertinent!
Here are a few gentle suggestions.
Five Lovely Things to Do in the In-Between Days
1. Tidy just one drawer
Not the whole house – just one. There’s something very satisfying about creating a tiny pocket of order. I’m going to sort out my BOW WOB and collage papers. Don’t forget to sign up for my Glastonbury Tor Online course !. Much appreciated. xx
2. Go for a proper walk
No destination, no step count. Just fresh air, winter skies, and space to think (or not think at all). I am going up on the forest tomorrow morning after the SHAC. Grace leaves for New York tomorrow 😔, so it’s Wellies on, and Pooh Corner here I come.
3. Make something for the joy of it
No rules. No “finished piece” required. A background, a sketch, a scribble. Creativity without outcome is deeply nourishing.
I have decided to make some hand-built pots, like these. Grogged porcelain. Made a pair a while ago; used them this Christmas, when we had a few friends over for a buffet style party. REALLY USEFUL POTS! Maybe tomorrow, after the SHAC and after the walk, I’ll wedge a little porcelain.

4. Look back – briefly
What went well this year? Roses and thorns of 2025. What surprised you? What are you quietly proud of? No judgement. Just noticing. The chair-making course was a rose in our year for sure.

5. Do nothing… on purpose
Put the kettle on. Sit down. Stare out of the window. This one counts more than you think.
This in-between time doesn’t ask much of us.
It doesn’t need huge productivity or purpose or grand intentions. Just presence.
So if today feels a little floaty, a little quiet, a little odd – you’re doing it right. Let yourself linger here for a while. The New Year will be along soon enough.
Come on ! Roses and Thorns…
Love and Clarity always 💛

I have done number one on your list. Sorted out a kitchen cupboard, feels great.
Then I am going to tackle a collage art piece (viaduct) Number 3 on the list
Tomorrow it is the Lion, the witch and the wardrobe theatre show
Thank you for the 5 things to do. I always love the in-between time. We used to dash around the country visiting friends and relatives but it got to the point where I just couldn’t do it anymore so we chill and if anyone wants to pop by we are at home.
Today has been a recharge day. Not that Christmas was demanding, but the run up must have been a bit much. Not even managed a dog walk, don’t worry the chief dog walker is on duty.
Today has been a day of sitting and sleeping as I’ve been in so much pain! I so wanted to make a few cards for the friends I missed off the Christmas card list ( was in too much pain to sort out list properly!) but unfortunately sleep won! Hopefully I can stand long enough to cook dinner! Hope you managed to get out tomorrow for a walk in the woods. Shall look forward to the shack!
Today I’ve have been sorting my undies drawer, who knew that I had bras older our house! And why did I think that about 50 pairs of socks would be needed🤣
All in all a nice relaxing day with something ticked off the list 💕
You’re right Barb. I’m constantly looking at the calendar, thought today was yesterday!!!
So, I’ve made my lists. Reading a book, no TV. Eaten very little but enjoyed my cuppas.
ooooooo SHAC tomorrow. Whooopppeeeee. Grace off to cross the Pond soon. Ahhhhhhh. Right. see you in the morning. 😘😘😘😘
Hi Barb,
I spent today looking through my box of half done art pieces for pictures to put in my Clarity calendar. I also did several “what if” experiments on backgrounds I made at last year’s retreat. The colours were a bit dark, green and purple, but I did some stamping with white embossing. After a bit of grey ink to darken round the trees, it didn’t look too bad.
Enjoy your evening.
Love Zara xx
Today has been a craft day! Finishing off some secret squirrel stuff to post to Clarity. Making those early January birthday cards, walking 5000 steps in the dark1 to the store and back to post them, that meant getting dressed, could hardly go to the shops in my PJs that I’d slobbed about in all weekend. No one to visit, nowhere to go, so just some time hibernating.
No time to clean out drawers or cupboards, I’m sure they will be waiting patiently for when I’ve time. Back to work tomorrow I’m sure it will bea busy day at the surgery!
I’m glad you’ve had a wonderful Christmas that ran to plan, always a good feeling when things run to plan.xx
We have had a quietish day today, our nephew called in for some lunch & we sat catching up with what he has been up to, now we are sat watching the TV – live tennis from Dubai – Sabalenka v Kyrgios – girl v boy – quiet an interesting match as they try & outwit each other.
Tomorrow I must pack a few more boxes – plan is to get the house all packed up except for things we will need to use so that we are ready to start the projects in the flat. Just need to solicitors & probate office to get back to work !!
So today I have completed No 5. Tomorrow I will tick No 1 off the list as I sort whilst packing. I would love to do No 2 but can’t walk far at the moment. No 3 I am using some of my wool stash to knit items for the premature baby units in Birmingham & No 4 I have enjoyed the online courses this year, some I need to complete but that job is already on my to do list for 2026.
See you in the SHAC tomorrow at 10 xx
I’ve just put up a few more decorations and moved the boxes upstairs. They stay up until March, so no rush. They help to bring colour and light to the dark months and help to get me through.
I still need to mount a Groovi embroidery angel I’ve just finished for a friend’s gift and will think about how to do this for half an hour until the American football starts and everything else stops. Feet up, embroidery/puzzle/crystal art on lap tray, snacks, peace and happiness (hopefully). Enjoy your Christmas Sunday xx
Your number 5 was on the cards today. I decided yesterday do do very little today. Started by getting up very late and remain in my dressing gown. The only other thing planned was to send in the BIP hunt answers. Tick.
Tomorrow a day of two halves I think. AM normal Monday duties then afternoon sorting all Clarity goods purchased and sign up for the Groovi course in January, so a bit of planning is also on the cards.
My brother calls this Twixtmas. Today we took a day off from caring for dad and went to celebrate my mother in laws 91st birthday. My sister came to be with dad in my absence.
Tomorrow I will sit and read or do some crochet, to just unwind my mind and rest my body! I love your list of suggestions x
We were entertaining on Boxing Day and again today (didn’t have enough chairs which was fun). Really looking forward to a relaxing hour in the Shac before getting ready to head off for a few days with friends for the New Year. Can’t wait to be able to actually switch off, just relax and breathe for a couple of days.
