A Diamond Day

A Diamond Day

Hi there

The best days are the ones that unfold unplanned. When things just fall into place easily. Those are Diamond Days – and today was one of them.

Mark and I had earmarked the day as our Golden Boot day together. In Gray-speak, that means a trip to the Golden Boot in Maidstone – a brilliant shoe shop that caters for people with big feet – where Mum treats son to a pair of BIG shoes. A great family business. Great shop. Great selection. Great customer service.

Mark found not one but two pairs of super-cool shoes – HUGE shoes – and by noon we were back out in the blue-sky sunshine.

“Let’s go and see Oma. Surprise her.”
“Let’s take her for lunch – she’ll love that.”
“Let’s see if Steve and Sheila want to join us.”

Yes, said Oma.
Yes, said Steve and Sheila.
Yes to the Bredhurst Bell.

By 1pm we were all there, enjoying a surprise lunch together.

It’s so easy in the Gray family. No fuss. No fluster. Just a straight-up YES, followed closely by my treat. We argue more about who’s picking up the tab than anything else.

YES – so Mark got to see his Oma and uncle before heading back to the States.
YES – and I got to spend a Diamond Day with my family.

And YES, it got me thinking about that word.

Because if any one of us had opted for NO instead of YES today, we’d have missed a Diamond Day altogether.

No often comes from habit – from caution, from past disappointments, from laziness even, from a desire to stay exactly where we are. It’s the default setting. Safe. Predictable. Quiet.

But yes is no harder to say. It costs the same breath – and yet it carries possibility.

Yes says: I’m open.
Yes says: I’ll try.
Yes says: Let’s see where this goes.

So often we say no, not because we actually want to, but because we’re afraid of change, of effort, or of being seen. A yes makes no promises – it simply allows movement. It lets life flow instead of stall.

Mum didn’t hesitate. Neither did Steve. It was a chance to see Mark – and to be together – and they grabbed it. That old truth: don’t just say I love you… do I love you.

Diamond Day.

Love and Clarity,

  1. I love impromptu gatherings. No time to stress. As Dave might say JFDI.

So pleased the last day before Mark leaves was wonderful for all. Lovely memories made.

  2. What a lovely way to spend Marks last day. Glad T all went well.
My day was spent getting ready for my 4th +Chemo, all went well although it took much longer than usual, and I feel fine so not a bad start going in to the New Year. The nurse in charge actually confirmed I could have a small bevy to celebrate the occasion which made me very happy, one tradition we don’t have to give up.
Happy New year to everyone, see you in 2026.

  3. Impromptu get-togethers are the best. No fuss, no expectations, just a relaxed treat and a lovely way to connect. Fabulous.

  4. My problem is the other way around, I don’t know how to say NO. Will you do this? Can you do that? What about this? and on and on it goes, always giving, putting myself last. I even look after the cat better than I do myself. My late Father always said if you want something doing ask a busy person. Guess that’s me then. 😬🤣 xxx

  5. A lot of impromptus here – or there used to be, not quite so easy now but still have a go ! Glad you had a lovely day and Mark had a bonus of two pairs of shoes – did you get a pair Barb ? Have a good evening xx

  6. Hi Barb
Glad to hear The Golden Boot is still in business, my mum used to take us there when we were kids for our back to school shoes.
Sounds like you had a lovely day.
    Zara xx

  7. A lovely picture of you all.
Diamond days sounds a brilliant name for those impromptu moments that turn out to be the best ever.
What a great way to finish off Marks trip to the UK – safe journey home Mark.
Tomorrow is the end of 2025 which seems to have flown by – we will be at home looking after our grand puppy Olive who is a 6 month old cockerpoo & very bouncy & not still for very long so she should keep us on our toes !!
Lets hope we can all manage to have some diamond days in 2026 xx

  8. Oh WOW, a truly Diamond Day.
What a great read. Must admit it brought a lump to my throat.
Thank you so much Barb for sharing such a special day with us all.
I’ve heeded your advice for the coming year.
    Bless you all.❤️❤️❤️❤️
