Try to relax…

Try to relax…

Hi there

Thanks for popping in. The One Day Special is well underway on Create & Craft, Paul is doing a cracking job, and the Floral Bijou ABC is proving very popular – which is good news indeed! Paul and I had planned on sharing the TV hours, but I had to go to the dentist today, and it couldn’t be cancelled. The injections are wearing off now, and I’m not feeling great to be honest. But it has to be done. Back there tomorrow too. Not only is it unpleasantly uncomfortable, but it’s also going to cost an arm and a leg! All because of one pesky tooth! If it were at the back, out of sight, I’d let it go – literally. But this one’s right at the front, and my vanity insists I hang on to it !! So maybe I should start selling my pots!! Get back out in that garage Gray!

I remember having this cartoon on my office wall years ago. Sums up perfectly how I feel about dentists…and I bet I’m not alone there!

But there you go. Like my dear old Dad always used to say, you’ve only got one set of teeth to see you through your whole life – look after them.

It was also put to me today that my teeth are not as nice and white as they might be because I drink so much tea. Tannin and all that jazz. Oooh she do like a brew!! So I googled what to do about it when I got home, and it was suggested that I should drink my tea through a straw. YMBFJ!!

But there it is. Everybody’s got something. And in the big scheme of things, a wobbly front tooth is pretty inconsequential. I just don’t want to be a Gappy Lil ! That’s what Dad called me when I was a kid and my milk teeth fell out. Hahahaha. And years later, back when I used to smoke, he called me Fag ash Lil. I do miss him.

Now I’m rambling, and I am sure I have talked about this in the SHAC. But for all of my childhood and most of my adult life, I seriously thought we had to put our teeth underneath the pillow at night, so that the Tooth FERRY could come and leave a shilling. German Mum, German pronunciation = Tooth Ferry. What an Aha moment I had when I finally realised it was a fairy who dropped in!!

Same German Mum who taught me Bob’s your Ankle.. I only figured out he was my uncle a few years ago, when somebody on telly responded to my “..and Bob‘s your Ankle“ with “..and Fanny’s your Aunt!” (in my head I thought, why would Fanny be my Aunt…and then it hit me. Boom). Funny really.

It’s good to reminisce.

Hope you can tune in to watch Paul at 9pm, or at 10 and 2 tomorrow. We hope you love the little ABC. It is rather lovely to use – in stamps AND Groovi

  1. Dental treatment is definitely not cheap! It’s a good going hourly rate for a check up! Hope you’re pain eases soon. Hxx

  2. I hope you sort out your tooth problem tomorrow.
Look forward to catching up with Paul tomorrow.
I saw a lovely quote at the weekend in a beautiful walled garden which I thought you might like.
Grow Beauty in the Garden of your Mind.
    Good luck for tomorrow.

  3. Try and hang on to your teeth if you can. I have recently had to have a partial denture due in part to aggressive chemotherapy, which doesn’t do your teeth any good and soft teeth. Not to be recommended! Very expensive, uncomfortable and ineffective at chewing, only crushes food. I don’t drink tea but wouldn’t suggest you use a straw, it’s a similar action as smoking and will give you wrinkles. Will be sending good thoughts to you for your treatment and best wishes. xx

  4. Will be very interesting to know what they do for your tooth as I too have a wobbly front tooth. Hope tomorrow goes well for you

  5. Haven’t caught the shows yet but will as I definitely want these plates ! Sorry to hear about your tooth, hope you feel better soon. Laughing about your tooth Ferry story ! I hope you didn’t try to take yours out every night to put under the pillow !

I fell over earlier in garden, long story short, ok after sitting there for 5 mins thinking how am I getting up
as no one came to my rescue – I suppose he would have come to look for me when he wondered where his tea was! Thought I’d broken my ring finger but just swollen and bruised – glad I took my rings off straight away. Probably have a bruise here and there in morning. Once shock wore off and I got myself up and clothes in wash – I was sorting out old garden pots and fell amongst them – I was ok. You just never know what’s going to happen next ! X

    1. Ouch. I hope you’re ok Jackie. I fell over in the garden a few years ago, flat on my face after tripping over my boot lace ( lesson learned) and when my husband saw me he thought I was having a rest so left me there. Must have been about 15 minutes before I could get up as I’d winded myself, hahaha.

  6. Last November I started treatment to have a crown fitted. I had about 5 injections right at the very back on 2 occasions. Not sure what went wrong but the result was I could only open my mouth enough to get a flat knife in. Eating was nigh on impossible and all just before Christmas. I was so depressed. The only advantage was a loss of 5lb in weight. I ended up at the Maxilofacial dept of the hospital. They were brilliant and after 2 months things improved. I’ve got a dental appointment next month and I must say I’m a tad nervous. I’ve never been worried about dentists – I am now

  7. OMG is this the same tooth that you had an issue with in the SHAC on Monday! Your anecdotes do make me smile. Thank you and keep smiling (while you can). Hope all goes well tomorrow in round two at the dentist.

  8. Dentists – hate them – well the experience! I went yesterday – I still get terribly nervous- having a problem with my jaw doesn’t help 😂. Had a full blown panic attack recently. Well it’s done for another 6months thank goodness! Only one filling – a patch up.

I feel for you Barbara – sounds like you are braver than me! Hope that you get your front tooth fixed and the pain subsides soon!

I do laugh when you tell us about your mum and her pronouncing certain words- I’ll have to start writing down some of my mums with her accent. 🤣🤣🤣

  9. This resonates with me Barbara, as I have to have three teeth out next Tuesday. I already have a partial upper plate and will need a new, even larger partial plate once my mouth has healed.

Found out a few months ago my dentist of over 20 years had removed me from their list because of non attendance over the pandemic and after I had then contracted Covid, and as a vulnerable patient (CKD), I was faced with trying to find another NHS dentist. After months of searching I found one who would take me on. So I’m travelling to good old Gillingham High Street from Sittingbourne. Your old stomping ground !

  10. Can sympathise about dentists & teeth. 1 of my front ones is a crown & I have to ask the hygienist to go gently when she reaches that point especially if I am due to be a way shortly after my appointment as in the past it has been known to fall out. Have said appointment on Monday & with the Open Days in 2 weeks after that she had definitely be gentle !!
Hope all goes well for you tomorrow. Iwill watch the shows on catch up as I have to have some laser treatment on my left eye tomorrow so will have to wait for the drops to wear off.

  12. You have my sympathies. I loathe going to the dentist. I ring them every six months but each time I am told we will not be taken off their list but they are unable to give me an appointment as they only have 2 part time private dentists and no NHS fella but they still have the NHS sign up outside the building.
There are whitening tooth pastes but when you look. At the stars with dazzling teeth it looks a bit bizarre.
Love the new Groovi plates, bought them and the bijou alphabet stamps but already had the numbers. Watched the show and not at all surprised at the speed at which they sold.
Good luck for tomorrow, hope all goes well.

  13. Oh no – you don’t have a lot of luck with your teeth do you? Hope all goes well tomorrow.
Tooth Ferry and Bob’s your Ankle had John and me laughing out loud! My late friend Kathy always thought the Who song Pinball Wizard had the infamous lyrics “Sean plays the ping pong ball!!!” Whenever I hear it I think of her and smile x

  14. Hi Barb – well, it seems we can all sympathise with you and your tooth problems……..me included. I’ve had dental problems all my life but for the last 20 years, have had the attention of a super dentist who hardly inflicts any pain. I only have 5 lower teeth left and she has warned me they will have to go soon!!! Luckily I also have an excellent dental technician who makes my dentures but they are never as good as the real teeth!!!!! Ah well, now I’m getting really old (as you know!!!), I suppose I mustn’t grumble…..it is what it is and could be a lot worse!! Keep smiling 🥹🥹

  15. Oh Barbara I do sympathise with you had to go on Monday wasn’t looking forward to it but now it’s behind me I’m relieved 6 months before I have to go again. Good luck for tomorrow I’ll be thinking of you.

  16. Oh, Barbara, I feel for you. Good luck tomorrow. Dentists! Hate them.
Mine have struck me off because my dentist went back to Poland to look after her elderly mum, and after they cancelled my appointments while I was waiting for a new one to arrive, then they told me because I hadn’t been for my last check up I was no longer on their books. Incidentally, my husband, who had the same dentist, has been twice since, but they still won’t let me make an appointment. Jobs worth. X

  17. Hello Barb, Good luck with the dentist hope it gets sorted. I am petrified of the dentist, and am struggling to find an NHS one. Going private is so expensive, but I know I will have to soon. Will record the shows to watch later. Take care everyone. Bx

  18. Hope all goes well back at the dentist today, I hate going, I seem to produce so much saliva and feel I’m going to drown and that suction pipe never seems to cope as it connects to my tongue! Happy days x

  19. Seems to be the year of the dentist for a lot of us. Apparently my loose tooth last year was caused by plaque attacking my bones and despite a sonic toothbrush special gum toothpaste and mouthwash and those little tooth sticks I can’t stop it. Now having invasive deep cleaning every three months with half a dozen injections pre treatment and a warning that it won’t stop me losing more teeth. Still my mum had all her teeth removed before she was thirty so
I’ve lasted more than twice that. Relieved we still have an NHS dentist to be honest

  20. That’s bad I hate dentist they stole most of my teeth when I was 15 , I have but 6 left at the bottom front.not seen one since covid started hubby phoned them couldn’t get through was no 33 he went straight to the dentist to make appointment told him to phone in the morning at 8 pm he gave up cause still couldn’t get through

  21. Blimey, Barb, we all seem to be in the same boat with our teeth right now. I was at the dentist on Tuesday for the last of my fillings (plus another tooth removal!). I’m going to need a partial plate on the bottom and I will be getting my first impression done at next visit. No NHS anywhere round here so costing an arm and a leg (£400ph near enough!). My dentist is lovely though and every visit has been completely pain-free, so I’m counting my blessings in that respect. Good luck at the dentist today (was it a 2.30 appointment?) and pls let us all know how you got on x ❤️🤞
    Debbie Lee

  22. Oh dear…..I really feel for you as I hate the dentist too (not the lovely man himself just what he does). One of my front teeth is an implant which cost an arm and a leg but at least it solved the problem. Hope it all goes well.

  23. Oh dear – we are all a bunch of wrecks these days aren’t we?? I remember once reading some advice about dentists – you should always run to your dental appointment – in case your fear takes over and your courage to go might fail. My kind dentist lets me ‘stroke’ bendy cat in my head with my hands whilst I’m ‘under. I live with only one front tooth because I’m not in the public eye – and dentures are so bloomin’ uncomfy.
My cousin says I lost my front tooth kissing the boys!
    Love
    Maggie (York UK)

  24. Can’t read the comments today. Just reading about teeth makes me shake. Been there today.
Hope you feel better soon Barbara and the problem gets sorted without too much pain.

  25. Just had my front crown replaced as it cracked. Brilliant dentist but I take Valium before I go as I am physically sick. My mouth hurts and by Jove does my pocket. Also had my three visit to opticians to have ingrowing eyelashes removed. Bit of a wreck this week. My sympathy. But worse things could have happened

    1. Sorry to hear you had a rough time at the dentist, and that you fear dentists in general. I was a dental nurse for many years, and I will tell you girls a secret. I picked more men up off the floor after they went weak at the knees with fear than I did women. My late Dad had an addition to Bob’s your ankle and Fanny’s your aunt saying…he used to add and if your auntie had b***s she’d be your uncle.

  27. Sorry to read about your dental problems. Have never been able to understand dental care is not part of regular medical care. Hope you are feeling better soon
Watching Create and Craft right now. The Bijou Floral set has sold out twice and 75% gone on a third set!
    Congratulations

  28. Brilliant shows by Paul on Create and Craft for another amazing ODS, not surprised it sold out – 3 times! Magic designs from Barbara and Jazz, awesome samples from the Design Team! Couldn’t resist a little order! Good job my family don’t read Barb’s Blog! 🤣
Sorry to hear about everyone’s dentist problems. I came back from holiday at the weekend and part of a filling fell out! Rang the dentist, needed to book a 6 month check anyway, and 15th June was the first available appointment! Another bit of the tooth dropped out today – by the time of the appointment you’ll be calling me “Gummy”! 🤣

  29. I sympathise with you Barbara. I hate going to the dentist & I’m ashamed to say I haven’t been for years. I have recently registered with a private practice as there are no NHS dentists taking on patients locally. I have a check up booked for the 4th July which I have already had to pay for!!. Hope your visit tomorrow is not too painful. x

  30. Only the cost would phase me, don’t mind the dentist, they study doing extra degrees like doctors but they concentrate on your mouth, docs get to study the rest!

  31. I really feel for you Barbara. For what it’s worth, I have macular treatment which means injections in both eyes every 8 /10weeks. I take pain killers 30 mins before treatment (my choice but might be worth a try) but am treated with such care I feel pressure but no pain. As I’ve said so often, forever thankful.there is no plan B for this !
Paul was great on tv today, brilliant.x

  32. if it’s in danger of going try a “sticky bridge” no one will notice and it saves dentures!
BTW Please will you identofy the flowers on the numbers. I have the A-Z iibook but don’t see info on numbers. Thank you.
